This DIY wooden sailboat is launched and as she floats, and the videos will continue far into her journeying. There is plenty aboard to finish, build, and perfect.
We are at The WoodenBoat Show this weekend. Come see us at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut. We motored here on Arabella! www.thewoodenboatshow.com/
You'll notice a talented en plein air painter at the end of this video-that's Mariah Little. See more of her work at her website: www.mllfineart.com/ or on her Instagram feed: / mllfineart
In this video, we give a sense of the two weeks at Buzzards Bay Yacht Services, where we worked very long days so we could motor to The WoodenBoat Show in Mystic, Connecticut for this weekend. When it comes to all the detail of the work there, we'll definitely be telling you more soon.
We even fire up the diesel engine to come around the wharf in Mattapoisett. This is a real treat. We hope you get a sense of what it was like to be there with celebratory crowds, our families, and each other. It'd be a misnomer to call this a finish line. It was definitely a milestone.
Thank you very much for all of your support and for watching. It means the world.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Dear frankpainter7571 👍👌👏 Yes, yes, yes! 🙌🙌🙌 Three times Hooray! 2) Ben Fundis is soooo much better than the bad host who was doing the live launch. She obviously had not much clue about anything. This whole, unique spectacle about launching Arabella and the team/crew definitely deserved better. Any of the crew could've done a better job (especially Ben and Anne Bryant). Best regards, luck and health in particular.

Alix, you are such a class act, and I'm really proud of you for attending the launch of Arabella as the OG of the project. It speaks to your maturity, grace, and dignity. @@sparkyenergia Please. The first time Steve saw Alix's baby was on the deck in this episode - just look how Alix introduced him to the baby for the first time, on deck. It also appears that it's the first time in years since Steve and Alix have seen each other or been in contact. Steve and Alix are not friends anymore. If they were, Alix would not have vanished and would have, at a minimum, been around and been in touch. Steve's excuse was Alix's dad, girlfriend, and he was "building his own workshop." Those were all convenient ways to cram a round peg into a square hole instead of just coming out and saying the truth. Alix put in way more than he got out of it, and in my opinion, likely got turned off when Steve came out with his "me, mine" attitude - no matter who owned the boat in the first place.

my dad loved this channel so much. unfortunately he passed away in feb 2023 before he could see the completion of the boat. he built many things in his life himself like our home, all the furniture, pocket watches, bicycles and machines, but in his ailing old age, he no longer had the physique and dexterity to do those things anymore. he found so much pleasure in this channel though. it was one of his dreams when we were little to boat around the whole world and live life out on the seas, but he was able to live vicariously thru each video and follow along with the project. he mentioned you guys a lot over the years and i could see the joy light up his eyes whenever he did. so thank you very much and congratulations

Dreaming big, community and achieving goals. We have more in common than what politics make us believe. I followed this channel from its keel casting days until now, if you have as well I can can safely assume you have shed a tear as well. This project honors so, so, so many things from history, craft, work ethic, tradition, art, speciality trades, community, learning, technology...it is hands down the classiest build project on youtube. I just stumbled on this via a CBS News article. I kept looking at the boat in the video, not knowing much about it, but thinking that it looks so incredibly familiar. I was sure it was an Ingrid. For 10 years in the early 2000’s I lived and sailed on an Ingrid ketch in the Pacific Northwest, based in Port Townsend. My Ingrid was built in the early 50s on the Fraser river outside of Vancouver, BC. She had a unique heritage with the original Atkins design having been updated by famed Marine architect, Laurent Giles. She has a colorful history including 10 years in the South Pacific, movie, stars, bank, robbers, and more. She still lives in good hands in the Pacific Northwest. The happiest days of my life were spent on that boat. I am so incredibly envious. BTW, her name is originally Christian is and greet was and remains Jaga.

I was so happy to be able to be there for the launch, it was definitely New England full-on snotty, but no one cared, it was a special moment to be able to see first hand. I live only 20 minutes away, how lucky for me and my friends who were there to take part in this epic journey!!

„If you want to build a ship, don't round up men to collect wood, to prepare tools, to allocate jobs and to split up the work, but teach the men the desire for the wide endless sea.“ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry I’m watching since the lead pour and never missed an episode. It was nice to see some faces that joined into that journey, mainly Alix. Steve steer Arabella go to some nice adventuers. May you always have wind in your sails and a hand-width of water under your keel.

The biggest takeaway for me, is how huge Arabella looked in the boathouse, and how small she looks on.the water. As in all things in life, it is all a matter of perspective..fair winds and following seas.

She is so beautiful in the water. Beautiful editing and scoring, Ben, the second part of the video was very emotional. Got me all clogged up. Tear-jerker, indeed. I watched from the very beginning. My children and yours have been born and grown somewhat since then. Life for me became hard in recent years and I lost touch with this project but I never stopped thinking about it. I decided to check in and something must have been calling because only 2 weeks have passed since this was uploaded. I don’t really feel a part of any community but this I am fully invested in emotionally. What an incredible gift you have to bring everyone together and apply the skills we have evolved to use. Bon voyage and I hope you continue to upload your travels with Arabella. I wish I was there with you.

I want to be super clear that a vast majority of our crew was compensated because they are working class people who can’t work for free. We did have many short-term (few days at a time) volunteers, but selflessness wasn’t required to be a part of this at all. That’s so important for us to communicate… no one had to take a hit to get Steve across the finish line. The rising tide took all boats higher. -Anne

Holy moly this was a tearjerker. I started watching this channel less than 2 years ago when I saw a news story about a local man who was determined to build a sailboat from scratch despite having no shipbuilding or sailing experience. I subscribed because I felt like I needed a role model - someone chasing a crazy dream and making it happen. Seeing Arabella launch was a thing of beauty, and I’m inspired to keep working hard and live to my potential. Thank you Steve and team for documenting this moving achievement. This was truly one of the most uplifting things I’ve seen.

Felling and milling the lumber. Pouring the lead keel. The first boat house. The rebuilt boat house. The massive backbone timbers. Putting up the molds. Steam bending the frames. Disassembling Victoria. The bronze floors. The cedar planking. The oak planking. Alix, Steve and Kiva. The diesel engine. The first bulkhead. So many milestone events that we have been privileged to be part of. Congratulations Steve!

What an achievement! Really looking forward to the metamorphosis this channel will go through. I am a WSLP (watching since lead poor), been watching ever since and saw her launch live. I feel a bit a part of this project. Have recommended the channel to some people and made a very modest contribution once. Would not have paid for probably more than a few bronze screws, but it's a few screws 🙂 I hope that at some point in my life I line up with Arabella's position in the world and maybe see her for real. Cheers team!

There have been MANY great channels that do great things like this in the making of something extraordinary but FEW of them actually finish. Its bitter sweet for sure to see this and i wish the last 6 months were drawn out in the old way you did videos showing the entire processes, so much got hardly a gimps at what got done and how.

I look forward to videos of Arabella at sail after watching her being built from the keel up. Great job to Steve, all of the shipwrights, volunteers, electricians, sailmakers, etc. as I have learned many things about boat building just by watching the videos every week or so. Wishing you fair winds and following seas throughout your journey and pray that your mom’s cancer goes into remission and stays there for many years as I follow your journey.
