Launching Into Sunlight & Revealing The Moon's Shadows - Deep Space Updates January 20th

Lots of Launches already in 2023, China and SpaceX are both throwing lots of rockets up there. Virgin Orbit and ABL Space Systems both attempted launches which ended in failure, with ABL only rising a few hundred feet before all the engines shut down and the rocket fell back onto the launch site.
Elsewhere there are a pair of small NASA spacecraft having trouble getting to the moon due to engine problems, and some amazing images of the permanently shadowed regions of the moon from the Shadowcam payload on Korea's Danuri spacecraft.

Its surreal seeing Scott talk about Lunar Flashlight! I spent the past 3-years developing and producing the thrusters. The thruster is a monster in throughput and performance; its in a class of its own!. BUT it is a SHAME that debris in the propulsion system, reducing propellant flow to the thruster occurred. Hindsight is 20-20.

I cant speak for NASA. But personally I don't think so. If the science really mattered they wouldn't have sent a technology demonstrating CubeSat. For the propulsion technology there will be more. All that is preventing a successful mission is metal chips in the feed lines.

I got to tour the ULA factory and man it is so beautiful... I got to see that first Vulcan being built (they had just received one of the BE4 engines and mounted it but were waiting on the second) and it's going to be so cool watching a rocket I saw up close in person launch.
@StevePemberton2
@StevePemberton2 Год назад
Do you remember what day that was? Both engines were delivered to ULA in October. On October 31st Tory Bruno tweeted "FE2 is on. FE1 will join it momentarily." Along with a photo showing one engine mounted and the other BE4 being brought in on a trailer. I always wondered what he meant by "momentarily" as no follow up photos were posted and the next released photos as far as I know were the recent ones of the Vulcan being loaded on a ship for transport to KSC.
@literallykey3298
@literallykey3298 Год назад
@@StevePemberton2 It was on October 21st, and if I remember correctly one of the engineers showing us around said it had only been there for like two weeks.
@StevePemberton2
@StevePemberton2 Год назад
@@literallykey3298 Thanks. I had wondered about the timeline. Both Blue Origin and ULA announced the delivery on October 31st. But Bruno's Tweet and photo that day seemed odd, as if he was saying "hey we just got the engines and we just popped one of them on and we're about to stick the other one on any minute now." I knew that wasn't the case, but I wondered when they did arrive, and why the delayed announcement for such a high profile delay that it even had its own meme (Where are my engines, Jeff?). Maybe they wanted to make sure everything fit right and looked okay before publicly announcing it. But ten days plus two weeks is about three weeks, that's quite a delay in announcing it. I guess they were using an abundance of caution.

Mombasa, Kenya is closer to the equator, and has better infrastructure, and fewer political problems. Kilimanjaro has been proposed as a good place for an electromagnetic rail launcher as it is the highest mountain in Africa, 5,900m, is very close to the equator, and has relatively gentle slopes rising out of a plain as opposed to being part of a mountain range. It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Payloads can easily be delivered to its base by road or rail but the top is in the stratosphere.

You can really see how the boosters are flying "backwards" (still going downrange) even as the burn starts, then they seem to hover then start to move back to the west.
@StevePemberton2
@StevePemberton2 Год назад
The boosters are also still climbing when the boostback burn occurs. They don't try and negate the climb in altitude since gravity will take care of that, the boostback burn is directed parallel to the Earth's surface in order to negate the downrange velocity, and as you said start to move the booster back towards the launch site. When the boostback burn is ended the booster is still climbing in altitude, but now going in a different direction. It's amazing to realize that prior to the boostback burn the booster's momentum is taking it towards a spot in the ocean hundreds of miles downrange. After the brief boostback burn is complete the booster's momentum is directing it on a nearly perfect trajectory to land at Cape Canaveral, with only the grid fins needed for adjustment. It's almost as if it is returning to Earth from a retrograde orbit.

I see two major problems with Djibouti- The launch corridor is very narrow (unless they treat this like their own launches in terms of dropping stages on civilized areas) and even if they do launch over water it's a major shipping lane so clearing all the boats from the range will be a major ordeal every time they want to launch. I don't see it being a good launch site.

The first launch by the Italian team was done at Wallops in 1964 where they received training on launching the Scout by U.S. technicians. Between 1967 and 1988 four more Italian satellites were launched from an Italian floating jackup barge that was towed to a spot two miles off the coast of Kenya.

Question: would a geostationary orbit exist outside the equatorial plane? Generally: does any orbit exist without crossing the equatorial plane?
@windcorpOLEGSHA
@windcorpOLEGSHA Год назад
All geocentric orbits either lay in the equatorial plane or cross it. In fact, that’s true for any plane that contains the Earth’s center. That said, you can have an orbit with a period equal to one Earth rotation, those are geosynchronous orbits. However, those are less attractive because to the observer on Earth (read: satellite dish), the spacecraft oscillates aling North-South direction.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 Год назад
All orbits must be circling the centre of mass, so yes, they must pass over the equator. And a geostationary orbit must be equatorial, since that's the only way to not only match the earth's rotation, but to stay fixed above a specific point on the surface.

The bolder trail instantly reminded me of the old mystery sliding boulders of the death valley. In that example the mystery sliding boulders of the death valley, I'm sure they blamed it on ice and wind. In this example(moon), is the wind replaced with lower gravity and much much colder temperatures, creating off planet moon dust ice, that has a lower coefficient to Earth ice? Legitimate question!
