I met Craig Charles years ago in Matthew Street, Liverpool. He was doing a radio show interview with some guy; I waited until he finished and asked if I could have a photo with him, he through his arm around me and said sure! He was so nice, humble & down to earth; it made my day that.

Steve Device to each their own my good man. I personally feel the two are hallmarks of classic British wit, and both have aged well. I’ll take exception to “lowbrow shit” though. I think the humour is right up there, and yet is still only a veneer for what is a very decent piece of sci-fi. Although I’ll grant the brand new red dwarf shows have lost something.

ABSURDITY is what makes Blackadder, Red Dwarf, and Monty Python work. The closest American comedy was early Saturday Night Live. Maybe Mary Hartman. When Cat said, "Uh-oh, I better make myself look big," in the first episode, I knew it was going to be good.

I have fond memories of Red Dwarf. My brother is 10 years older than me. So when this came on TV he was 11. And he started recording them off TV. We had 1-6 on VHS, then I took over from 7... But 8 was the last we recorded. We watched them so much throughout the 90's the tapes were so fuzzy because they were all worn out.

I adored this series in the 90s. For some reason it aired at a ridicilous time in my country, like 6:30 am or something, and I actually set my alarm clock just so I can catch the new episode. I'm not so keen about the reboots though. It's like one of your favorite rock bands of the 80s still performing, and while it's nice to still be able to watch them, it's somehow not the same and is maybe slightly ruining your nostalgic perception of what they used to be.

The US pilot of Red Dwarf was a failure because they tried to twist the show into a standard US sitcom (in terms of the rhythms used, not the 'in space' bit). Take the scene where Holly tells Lister that he's been in stasis for 3 million years. On the UK version, Lister is genuinely in disbelief and shock. In the the US version, Lister says, ".....my baseball cards must be worth a FORTUNE!" An out-of-place line if ever there was one.
@joelakat
@joelakat 5 лет назад
@@brianm2881 I mean, Lister has a one-liner in the original version there too ("I've still got that library book!")... the delivery of the baseball card line is just bad. Maybe the U.S. version would have been improved had the Pilot been picked up and they'd re-shot it. I know what you mean though. Grant said the original script was brimming with pathos and didn't have enough jokes... the U.S. script was the opposite, and the jokes weren't that funny.

Just to put this out there, I once had a room-mate that I absolutely enjoyed fighting with. No that wasn't the only thing I enjoyed doing with him, but we had very specific rules when it came to fighting. One of those was, if we had any bruises from our previous fight, then next fight would not take place until the bruises were gone. I also absolutely loved our conversations, and that we enjoyed the same kinds of music. When he got reassigned, he told me I was the best room-mate he had ever had. He also admitted to me that he never thought he would say that about anyone. If anyone had seen my arms at the time, they would have been convinced that he was a danger to me. They would have been wrong however. I enjoyed his company, and I enjoyed sparing with him.

That's basically correct. The word police started in the 80's with things like "vertically challenged" instead of short. Policy-wise, it didn't really kick in until the 90's. Same, I've just asked the same question. I didn't know someone else was going to play that role.

Or Alan rickman. I think Rickman could have done it with Laurie as Rimmer.

10:30 is that what vindaloo means in the show? Just anything with curry. Because only a few episodes and I was expecting him to come out with “mayonnaise vindaloo” “wet rag vindaloo” “hey I’m going to the store does anybody want anything vindaloo“

How come Peter Ridesdale Scott didn't take part in the Series I and II documentaries on The Bodysnatcher Collection DVD (2007)? He appeared in The First Three Million Years 3-part documentary on Dave just a few years ago.

@@stickytapenrust6869 Hopefully not the latter as it's really thanks to him as well as Paul Jackson Red Dwarf ever happened as he mentions around 16:03-16:33.

anyone notice that the best shows of all times have had trouble being made? Mainly due to execs and the people with money getting in the way.

Agreed, nothing beyond series 6 has had that magic. Apart from a few moments here and there. I think there are a number of reasons why: 1. The characters have started to become 90% focused on their 'quirky' traits, rather than having more rounded people. Cat became extra stupid, Rimmer extra annoying etc. The same thing happened with later seasons of Friends. 2. The core aspects that made Red Dwarf appeal to me got lost. The '4 guys stuck with each other, with no women' and the 'really innovative sci-fi scenarios that they always manage to mess up somehow, leaving them back at square one'. 3. The loss of low budget looking (these days) but surprisingly effective effects. A bit like how Jaws worked so well because they used the limitations to their advantage. The use of bigger sets and higher quality visuals in later series feels like they are filling the space that should contain great stories and humour. Part of the reason something like Cheers worked for so many years is because they didn't change the core location or character set in any big ways.

I think its because Chris Barrie left after season 6 and they brought that cloe antwentte i think that's how you spell her name as fit and sexy as she was it just didn't work so Barrie had to come back

The real cult following of the 1st series was in the services. The humour was straight military, the harshness, the piss taking, it was all anyone I knew on the service was talking about that first year......💖🇬🇧
