CNN's Laura Coates discusses her personal childbirth experience as a Black woman in America with Dr. Kameelah Phillips who shares tips on how Black women can reduce the maternal mortality rate. #CNN #News
I don't understand why they hid the reason of her passing. I don't even think people knew she was pregnant. It's so sad to hear this is the reason she passed away. It seems so preventable.
US is one of the richest countries on earth, but trails almost all of the developed world on life expectancy, maternal mortality, infant mortality. The people in charge don’t want people to know these things.
@@stevebeegreat Nah, dawg. Your refusal to vaccinate led to the death of a million Americans. Nothing will ever make that guilt go away. Deliberately slaughtering another human being is a *forever* stain on the soul.
Like every other graph, the consistent component is the growing lack of empathy is true care and concern for other people. Even when people are paired in what is supposed to be the most intimate relationship possible, they often arent.
Wow there’s some major wine glass flatulent smelling going on here. Either that or an Adderall high. If I was this self righteous to speak like you two I’d literally have abdominal sickness before I was done typing it.
Won’t happen. Absolutely will not ever happen. There’s too many people out there who believe the healthcare system is about good health. Most information your doctors tell you are wrong because the health industry doesn’t profit billions a year by curing you, they do it by “treating” you.
I think it has something to do with social status also. I had a miscarriage 35 years ago while in my late teens. I had no health insurance so I could only take urine tests that kept coming back negative. My thyroid meds were masking the hCG. I had a thyroid storm which are rare because people have insurance and get treated before it can become deadly. I was a petite, relatively attractive, intelligent young woman going to school to make something of herself that didn't have the money to take care of her health. I nearly bled to death on the care ride to the hospital. My mother took me so I didn't have and ambulance bill on top of what I had just been through. Blood all over the bathroom walls and floor. I still remember the sound of clots hitting the tile. I was taken good care of in the ED, but it should never have to come to that for anyone, anywhere, ever. I had a painful glimpse in to all of that. It's scary and lonely. Who has the time to advocate for themselves when you're just trying to keep your head above water. Things would have gone even worse if I was black.
WOW - your experience blows me away. You are so right and have such an immediate understanding of that scary lonely struggling place low income people live in and suffer through when ill. Thank You and Bless You and More Power to You.
So it's not a respiratory issue, it's extremely high blood pressure shutting down the circulatory system. Heart brain or lungs giving up first isn't really relevant to the root cause. Higher blood pressures, poor diets, diabetes and genetics would all be factors. Whatever the case, this is terrible for this woman and her baby. Rest in peace.
@@theropesofrenovation9352 ya no. There is way to catch and treat it before it kills you. If USA wasn’t a profit driven health care system then people would get their proper pregnancy care and less women and babies would die. As proven by all the other countries that don’t do for profit healthcare system.
The largest muscle in the human body is the Uterine muscle. It's hard to train this muscle for proper use during pregnancy and delivery. This is another example that women don't know how to beef up that muscle and doctors also don't know how to help women do anything but Kegel exercises. Pregnancy and delivery are athletic events much different from running or lifting weights and it is a lifelong need to not worship men with steroidal muscle mass but help women to participate in all forms of training for uterine muscles and the work they do in labor and delivery. And that muscle's work if generally involuntary. The medical profession and women's sports training for the average woman must address this crying need for women to have a strong and healthy uterine muscle. Delivery requires the best of uterine muscle conditioning.
I was in labor with my second son . My husband took my first son to my moms home. This hospital didn’t let my husband come in during the labor. Like with my first child. I remember there was a moment that I felt and thought that I would not make it. I didn’t take an epidural.
The only way to fix this and other medical problems is to take the profit motive out of medicine. All Hospitals, medical insurance providers, and pharmaceutical companies must become non-profit companies, and top tier executives pay needs to be at a set, reasonable, ratio. Right now, we are losing OB Drs. so much so that we are losing maternity services. WE are also losing pediatric medical services.
People lack empathy and are too busy doing anything else, rather than being outspoken and proactive about important matters, such as pregnancy and health issues. We move on to the next thing, and the next thing, neglecting whats important or dismiss it as if we cant do anything about it so why even try. I appreciated the segment and even that they added a mans input is key because everyone should be at the table discussing reproductive health and how it can be improved.
@@stevestoll3124 not true. Most countries have systems in place for people to get housing food and healthcare even when they are poor. In USA being poor can literally land you in jail. If you compare standard of living in USA with other countries you’ll find it’s actually worse to be poor in USA then 2/3 of the world. Especially if you factor in Doctors Without Borders because that’s healthcare in third world countries that many Americans go without everyday for fear of bankruptcy and it kills them.
pro life people would still coerce people into having kids via removal of reproductive rights, even if they have pre-existing conditions or at a higher risk maternal mortality.
Hard to understand the graphics. Are 70% of black women dying in childbirth? I know I must be wrong. The good doctor's recommendations of pre pregnant preparations and building a team when pregnant, seem to belong in a fantasy world given the lack of proper health care in the US.
70% higher chance of birth complications for black women in America. Probably because you guys were still teaching doctors black people don’t feel pain like white people and that they need less care up until 2006 so the vast majority of doctors still treat black patients with less care and don’t see anything racist about it because it’s just what the medical books said forgetting those books were written in a very racist time by very racist people.
This graph is not sitting here saying 32% of moms didn't make it in 2021... The year of covid ... Even 17% is a high maternal death rate. The numbers have got to be wrong.
@@theropesofrenovation9352 explain why european women who era giving birth later have a far lower mortality rate? if you check out the reasons in the usa it is almost always due to lack of prenatal care due to poverty or racial susceptability the exact opposite of what you are saying, the increase in danger to the mother as she gets older is actually negligable in comparison to substandard prenatal care
Why don't they show how many women have died because of abortions!!!????? Having children is the best thing we do for our next generation. People have been doing it and living for years!!!! Laura is unbearable.
Create a team? Who can create a team? You can pick who you want your doctor to be but outside of that I wouldn't know how to create a team. Is it just me, are people creating teams?
I am going to say the obvious here - while all the discussion and information is VERY IMPORTANT and BENEFICIAL - - it is not in my opinion to just lead into this important topic with a 20 second soundbite and photo of the Recently Tragically Deceased Tori Bowie. I know they are making the connection as a lead into the talk - - but it just was too abrupt and not compassionate to me. It was cold quick new snappy and that is not okay - - a young mother to be and her baby are dead. Such a painfully tragic loss to this world.

Amen. Don't bow. Still not clear why it was not reported earlier when she first died that it was pre eclampsia. Sudden death happening everywhere with so many athletes😢. At least we know with this particular healthy athlete the sudden death is being put down to this dangerous condition. Because it couldn't possibly be linked to anything else! 🙄 Good deflection by the mainstream into pregnancy and risks of child birth. We can now add sudden death from pregnancy as well as undiagnosed covid or maybe stress, climate change. Could be ANYTHING just not the thing that's the elephant in the room. Poor lady.
Let's remember that the average age of women giving birth is going up. As women age their chances of having complications go with it. Less developed nations have a lower mother mortality rate because women have children in the prime child bearing years 18-24.
@@Chanel8-i1n7n My "knowing" 👈🤔 includes watching THIS channel, for ANY death that ACTUALLY happens DURING childbirth, because this channel would run such a story EVERY HOUR for at least three days....👈🤔.. "Almost died" is cute..👈🤔 but doesn't help your argument any more than the 50 years of medical science killing your argument that what's in there, is NOT a human... Advocate for Abortion..! … This athlete would still be alive had just one feminist fitting through to her about how dangerous children are & the importance of killing them in the womb…
@@user-dx6wl5nr1r Who would be surprised the person who comments on videos about Trump to also comment on the video of a woman dying to say they dont care about it.
This is a troll account. I am straight up a black Christian conservative and I can see straight through your deception. Although I hate CNN and the mindset of these people here, I can never stand for deception. Not one single REAL Trump supporter I know personally goes this far to paint a fake picture. Try again loser.
what is the norm in our country , is the fact that a large percentage of people can't afford regular doctor visits , let alone a specialist visit or visits. so we always hear how people are suppose to be responsible and spend within their means, unless your a creditor or financial institution the it's ok to borrow and spend all you can. if economics is the major factor in pregnancy and child birth problems, then one should not have a child unless you can afford the major medical expenses that are occurred when being pregnant and having children. the other problem is one of self infliction. if a woman doesn't trust the medical profession , and decides to have a child at home on their own , then it is without a doubt very dangerous , and completely the fault of the woman if any problems arise and things go wrong. this kind of personal decision is not the fault of the medical profession , or american taxpayers problem. i am sorry for those who lose a child and or their life. but to make it a national crisis for what an individual does is not a good way to bring attention to the public.
You do realize over 60% of America is living below the poverty line. Only about 20% of the country can afford proper healthcare and medical emergencies.
@@tracim3080 that is my point. as much as i would love to have a country that everyone get's a good quality of life, the reality is we don't have that. i am and always will be what most data would call poor, below poverty. and i have always lived my life with the rules being if i can't afford something i don't buy it or do it. and i don't look at it as i'm poor and should feel less than, i look at it as this is a normal life, my reality is not the same as other peoples.
