Law and Mental Health: A Framework in Conducting Parental Capacity Assessments - Christopher Bishop, Psy.D., LICSW
Dr. Christopher L. Bishop is a forensic psychologist in private practice in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area for the past 20 years. In addition, he is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Trinity Washington University. Dr. Bishop currently serves as Chair, of Broadening Representation, Inclusion, Diversity, and Global Equity for AP-LS (BRIDGE) in Division 41. In addition, he is appointed to APA’s Child Protection Matters taskforce, where the team has developed guidelines for forensic psychologists to promote ethically sound practices in child protection evaluations. Dr. Bishop's areas of expertise are competency to stand trial, parental capacity assessments, sentencing mitigation, and other various forensic evaluations. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify your readiness to conduct parental capacity assessments and examine your biases in working with marginalized populations. 2. Analyze the referral process for parental capacity assessments from the viewpoint of child protection agencies and the court’s expectations. 3. Select evidence-based measures to address the referral question in parental capacity evaluations.
