Hi Alec. It looks as if terminology varies from areà to area. When I used to play in Lincolnshire, What you describe as a roll-up was referred to as a drive. The roll-up was simply the hiring of a rink, often by a single player, for a practice session, rather like with you and your two friends on that ditch-side rink.
Yes, The terminology can be quite different. I think most people in this area use the term roll-up for any game that is of a casual nature, where there is no need to book a slot. When a game is more organised, where names are required beforehand, it is then often called a drive. Although I think it can even vary from club to club. 😬
