Hello Alec. Having just returned to bowls after an absence of some years, I have discovered your series of videos. I am left wishing I lived in your area. How lucky the local people are to have you as a coach. I would so love to have your presentation skills. Thank you for giving your great gifts to the world of bowls. Paul

Very useful, many thanks Alex. Just started bowling this year with the good lady and finding it thoroughly enjoyable. And, your set of videos are seeing us through the minefield of the ‘know it all’ ‘I’ll tell you all, whether you want it or not’ ‘I’ll tell you even though I’ve told you twice’ and the more important ‘I’m gonna tell you my hospital record more than once today’ 😂 the characters make us laugh and, of course, they make the game all the more enjoyable, and we allow them all the time they need to tell us whats what. Thank you very much Alec. Hope you’re keeping well (but feel free to tell your ailments 😂)

Thanks Alec, another informative video from you. I have marked some games over the Winter (short mat county comps) and that went ok. Hope you are well and have a great 2023 season. I have got some friendlies outdoors in April coming up soon and played last weekend on the all-weather at Milton. Take care and good luck.

Hi Alec, Love your informative series mate, it's helped a lot as I have only just started bowling this year. Luckily although I started in an indoor club I met a member there who also bowls at an outdoor club too. He has invited me along for a roll up and I can't wait, roll on the summer season. I wasn't sure about starting a sport at 64 but I really have got into it, thanks for answering a lot of questions I had. Take care.

Just getting into lawn bowls. Thanks for the informative videos. Question: How should one maintain the bowls?
@LawnBowlsforFun
@LawnBowlsforFun 2 года назад
You are welcome. Bowls are easy to maintain, I wipe them with a cloth after every game, especially if wet. I also polish them once in a while with a paste called grippo, but make sure excess grippo is removed, as some indoor clubs don't like it on bowls as they say it may get on the carpet and damages it. As the name says it also helps you grip the bowl too, which I like, but not everyone does. A wash in soap and water does the trick too.

Thank you so much for this important video. I’m marking my first game tomorrow so this is extremely helpful to me and has given me more confidence! Wish I had watched a few markers in the past but I certainly will in the future. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos I like your easy going relaxed style 😊

Hi Alec I was wondering if you could make a video on how to apply grippo on bowls one of my mates recommended me to use it so I thought I would give it a try but I have been told don’t add much of the product to your bowls etc would be appreciated 👍🏻

Great suggestion! I will try and do it soon. Yes, be careful not to put too much on, it can make them too slippery especially if it is wet, but I find a small amount works well, it just gives a little more grip when needed.

Hi Alec....Need help on cleaning bowls whilst playing in a game...having trouble with the bowls getting sticky. Lost a game today with this happening and my concentration went off badly. Shane in Australia

Hi Shane, I use a good quality bowls cloth but mainly if they get wet, In case the bowls slip out of my hand. I wonder what is causing the stickiness? I do use a small amount of grippo (well buffed onto the surface) which helps grip, but if you add too much they can become slippery. How about having a damp cloth to wipe them over every so often, then wipe a dry one make sure they stay clean? It’s worth a try. Hope this helps.

@@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks Alec....Grippo is banned on our carpet but not on our grass. I have pennant tomorrow so i will make sure this is done. The club i play for is Torquay Bowls club in Victoria..right next to the sea...gets a little windy and salt air , so the bowls get sticky if it is a damp day. I played in the final of the 100 up the other day where this happened and my concentation just lost it half way due to sticky bowls, just panicked i think. I got beat 100 to 95 in the after tailing by 25 in the middle and sorted myself ot. . I use micro fibre towel for my bowls, appreciate your comments as you have helped me before. That was with my line and bowling through a spot in front of me to my line. Its improved 20% for sure.

@@shanehicks7346 yes, likewise here regarding grippo. So the salty air is the reason. I know we had the problem once of sticky bowls due to substances coming off trees. I had to wash my bowls in soapy water to remove it. I would think that the best was to solve that problem, with a damp cloth to wipe them over every few ends. Sounds like you are doing well though, keep it up. 👍

Hello Alex, i am new to bowls as a social bowler for our club in NSW. I am only the 2nd lady with mostly gentleman in the social club about 20 of us. I was playing with my husband as pairs since i started for support and mentoring. I have completed almost a year now of games. I was asked if it's time for me to play without my partner, i guess players can't choose who they prefer to play with, so i shouldn't continue with my husband by my side, i understand. My fear is, marking a game. I have never had to. If i go alone, it's possible i will be asked and i don't know how to mark. I have an idea, but it terrifies me. We normally play pairs so 4 in a competition. How do i mark in this situation? Most times i had heard players discuss who is wanting to mark, and someone will say they are happy to.

Markers are normally only needed in a singles game, as you need someone to center the jack and help with questions about what is happening at the head without you having to visit it regularly. They also measure if needed and keep the score. In a pairs game, there is always someone at the head, so your partner will let you know the position and advise you what shot to play. The lead will also have to measure if required, so do some measuring to make sure you are confident about doing that. Also don't be afraid to tell your partner what shot is required, when needed. Hope this helps.
