Those Opposed twin brigs engines are unkillable if you keep clean oil in them. I had a 116 JD I blew the motor on, had a spare 18hp engine on hand, put it on, & did the update of getting rid of that pump on the carb. Put a new coil, & a starter on it and the thing was a beast. Pulley swapped it and did 15mph on the thing. Was a lot of fun to shift. Leaked a lot of oil cuz the sup gasket failed but that’s every brigs engine on the planet. Mine had 100psi of compression, & was a solid engine. I eventually sold it for $200 when the battery took a 💩 & at the time I had 5 other tractors, was abt to not be at home for a year so it had to go. It Needed $100 but I was doing school so I was pretty broke. I love these little motors. All of them in the junkyard are for a bad starter. All of the ones I had were failed starters. There’s an aluminum bushing that fails, & it’s unrepairable. New starter, coil, clean the carb, & it was a pretty darn reliable unit just had to keep putting oil in it. Motor was squeaky clean inside.

That looks like a 16oz cool one you’re drinking. You deserve it after all your work. Have another. Great video.

That switch that looks like points is probably a low oil safety switch, fill the engine with oil and see if it runs properly.

you did right by leaving the points wires disconnected. good job finding the problem

Such an interesting old girl there. I like where the battery sets and how it’s got a 90 degree gear box instead of a belt twist. They don’t make em like they used to! Great video!

On the kill wire, I found one that was bare under the flywheel and was grounding out. Just a suggestion. Was a simple fix. Either replace the wire, or fix and zip tie out of the way. I enjoy your videos sir. On the ignition, someone didnt want to go through the trouble of removing the points. Should have disconnected the wire to the points. You have it fixed. Thats all that matters. Personally I would remove the point wires. You dont need them and they can confuse you later on. Just a suggestion.

In regards to those points... Although I've never seen points mounted outside the flywheel (as opposed to under it), I suspect that those points were for the original magneto that you removed and replaced with the modern, all electronic ignition coil. You've done the proper thing by bypassing the now useless (and likely interfering) points setup. An oddity for sure, at least for me. 🤔

Some had external points ..usually the twins had them..i have briggs and onan's with points external to flywheel. not unusual...

basically the battery cover is you make a 2 part system one the lower cavity and 2 the ram part put plastic sheet in and put the 2 together and remove part

When you upgrade to Electronic coil ..you leave the old points alone usually ...and just remove the little rod that moves the points...cover the hole that rod goes through..and wire it according to instructions for Electronic coil.... you can find those instructions online.... the reason the old points parts are there is normal...
@LaidOffGarage
@LaidOffGarage 5 месяцев назад
Ahh okay, so your theory is the swap was done prior to me getting the tractor and the previous owner had already removed the push rod for the points? That would make sense!
@armyvet4081

you can put on a electronic coil - and leave the points alone

" In the End - It All Goes Back to the B E G I N N I N G " You asked a few significant questions during this Multiple clip Overview of things. I am here to tell you as the ( VOICE of REASON ) I once was where YOU are now sitting. The Mythical UNICORN sometimes referred to as the GREAT White Buffalo of Odds and Ends others throw together creating a FRANKENSTIEN to Sell under any number of brands, etc. My Sears Craftsmen * VERSION * was a Twin 16 with Dual Range Transmission. ONAN Engine instead of the more popular KOHLER so many seemed to have been Sold with. Just shy of a P.T.O. Garden Tractor. MINE was a Industrial LAWN Tractor sold in a Very limited supply still. WHY ( Am I ) Telling you all this ? THINK to what YOU have said here. ONE year, Sold only at True Value, Close to a MURRY yet cobbled items to make it very unique as well. The Points or Ignition system quirks. My Pal worked at Briggs and Stratton for many years. Talked often about how the various Engines were sometimes switched and swapped depending on Who needed them and how fast a transition LEAD time was allowed or NOT !??!?! So , I say to you and all the others out there too. It may LOOK like a Duck, Squawk Like a Duck, Even VERY similar to what parts diagrams and dealer info would suggest as a DUCK ( B. U. T. T. ) Like the A-$-$ in all of the human race. This * S W A N * is Not what it appears to be anyways. My Starte had gone out along with the drive Belt which was a (million to one ) ODDS * Out of Stock * never to be found through the general community. SEARS had a Central location to order / buy things locally. Before the Internet and closer to the late 60's early 70's when manufactured. I was NOT in a GOOD place to Bragin or Barter for Exact replicas or even original ( O. E. M. ) Substitutes like todays * GREY Market * has gotten used to. Instead a Bit of CROSS - Dressing of an Industrial USE / Built Motor was put into the Chassis of some left over Stock Commercial ( TYPE ) lawn mowers. Take Greek, Translate it into LATIN, Then Back check it onto a Boat, plane and train to cross Germany , the alps and then Australian way via a Steam ship of who is selling what and why only did ( I ) come across it as a SEARs and not one of many others being sold or passed off ? Back in the day ( U. S. A. ) Made meant a lot to many in this great land. YET, like a Honda or a Toyota, YUGO and DeLorean too. DATSUN, Nissan, Isuzu ( Came and Went ) Buying, Selling, SWAPPING in and out of other parts bins. Take a EDSIL then Put some lipstick on it and Chrysler, Plymouth, Merkur, and a Few others like the WHEEL HORSE, Cub Cadets, John Deere, and other ( BIG BOX store ) Versions of we want what you are selling. Slap a different color and sticker combo on the left over parts and we will buy as many as you can offer. My Friends ( PEAT and Re-Peat ) are about as Opposite twin brothers of Different mothers then a Red Headed Step Child at a St. Patrick's Day parade in the middle of summer in Africa while trying to chase down there family roots. A pound is a Pound is a pound. Feathers. Bricks, Toilet Paper , and Left over cheese curds sitting in the summer sun. Melting all into one then cut up and sold to all others. Names, place, manufacturers never gave it a second thought. CLONE Engineering. the marketing and Accountants always want ( BLACK ) not Red between Assests and Debts... YOUR welcome in advance. My Solution was to do what was possible Not Re-Invent the wheel or MOUSE traps filled with moldy cheese ( Catch My Drift ) If NOT ???? YOU are Not the person ( I ) was back then.

Nice job! A side note but I couldn’t help but notice you didn’t put the breather hose back on the air filter housing. I don’t know if you did it off camera but just figured I’d mention it in case. My buddy blew his motor by forgetting that hose so now I’m hyper aware of it 😂 lol
