Just a few moles can ruin an otherwise beautiful lawn. There are many methods that can be used to irritate, relocate, or eliminate moles. Direct trapping is one of the most effective means to control mole populations in your lawn. In this video, Dr. Ron Calhoun visits with mole trapping expert Brian Yost, to discuss ways that you can be most efficient with your mole hunting moments.

I have 3 of the mentioned traps (less the out of site model) and have never caught a mole. I realize now why I haven't!!! This video needs to be posted at the beginning of the search engine!! I do intend on purchasing a few out of sight traps. " I'm so excited. I just can't stand it!!!" Had to put that 70's song in! Thanks guys for this video!!

Great information on multiple styles of traps and how to position them. Bucket was a great idea, (we put yard ornament near it but never thought about light creaping in) Thanks for the Visual instructions.

VERY helpful video!! I will start using the bucket again! Also, after watching this, I learned I was burying the trigger too far into my dirt barrier. I always thought that increased the sensitivity! I’ll get out bright and early and reset my traps

I've killed moles previously by just going out very early in the morning, or late evening, and just watching their runs very close, have to be observant, watch closely. You will see the ground, or soil, lightly raise up and down, that's the mole. With a sharp, straight spade, place it over him, and drive down quickly. You may even hear a slight squeal. Don't mean to sound mean, but they can tear a yard up bad. Also, walk softly when approaching.

I used the Victor steel (spear) style trap after trying a lot a different things that didn't seem to work fast enough. I had a dead mole the very next day! I'm convinced it works. Would love to see another active tunnel again! :)

Some may dispute this but... do not touch the trap or put your fingers down the holes without some disposable or other gloves on. Moles have excellent smell and I have had my traps avoided by mole due to not wearing gloves in the past.

They won't get them all but Skunks will actually dig them up for food where I'm at in PA where the moles tend to have shallow tunnels.

These work in a perfect world, I've tried all the gimmicks,, you name it,, nothing worked,, juicy fruit, poison, spikes, traps, exhaust, flooding with garden hose,,, and my neighbor told me about using dog poop or any feces. Put it into a 5 gallon bucket, ,make a slurry, I used the hose nozzle and shovel,, I made 4 buckets several daze with the cooperation of the neighbors dogs,, knarly stuff,, I poured half a bucket into each hole,, beginning at the ones nearest my house,, YOU DO NOT WANT THESE CRITTERS UNDER YOUR HOUSE!! I had over 50 holes because they just kept coming after nothing worked,, THIS WORKS,,, everything else dissipates or requires constant monitoring,, do this,, it has a lingering effect and fertilizes your yard,, works for voles, moles, gophers,, all tunneling critters,, HOLY SH!T,, LOL,, it's been two weeks and no new mounds,,

I have a question about mole behavior. Is it true that moles are active year round and that when surface activity slows or stops they are still active in deeper tunnels and can still be caught? Thanks
@LS1007
@LS1007 5 лет назад
Yes, they are active year-round but in the summer when the ground is dry they will go deeper and in the winter when the ground is frozen they will also go deeper. They do not hibernate and there is no traps that will catch them when they are deep in the ground. Therefore the best time to trap is when you see activity in the early Spring , Summer ( providing it’s not to dry) and Fall.

1-28-2018 - - Show me da mole e. Also, where to buy these traps? Also, is there a trap for those mole-hills with a vertical hole but no trails near the surface? I live near MSU so have access to Meijer's, Home Depot, Menards, Walmart, Lowe's ... where to buy? Can I buy these traps on campus somewhere for say - less than a thousand dollars each? (It's MSU, remember).

Amazon or Menards. Most of the big boxes stores (lowes/HD) don't sell kill traps for some reason... (as if the plethora of poisons they sell are any safer or more humane)

Wear gloves....if you touch the traps with bare hands, that mole will smell trouble and avoid it.

@doginwoods

For all those who are truly interested in getting rid of moles, you have to think like one. First, why are they in his yard, simple. He must be an environmentalist, afraid to treat his yard yearly with a pest control. The moles are there for one reason, to eat. He has obviously got an over abundant supply of grub worms (the white fat worms that are awesome for fishing bait!). If you want to keep moles from your yard, kill their food source, then you'll never see them again. I have an acre in the deep south, where these suckers are very prolific, and anyone and everyone knows, GET RID OF THEIR FOOD SOURCE! They don't dig the tunnels for the fun of it, it's entirely to feed their family.
@LS1007
@LS1007 5 лет назад
Moles eat other things besides grubs. They eat worms, larvae, insects, almost any type of bug. You’ll never kill all the worms and bugs and the moles will keep tearing up your yard looking for food. The best method it to trap them, then you know you got rid of them.

@darrellturner7303

maybe you shouldn't let your dogs crawl through the mole tunnels where they can trigger the traps ...ha ha.. secure the bucket well, and the dogs should not be caught, instead of the moles..lol

I am a mole hater as well, I had hills surrounding my lawn but only a few in my lawn, not sure why. Maybe My poor soil and the gravel in my clay fine soil isn’t liked by the moles so they eat the worms where the garden is.

lol. Thanks for the laugh DirtRoadTraveler. I got my mole a couple of days ago, with help, and now am a happy gal. To deter any more invaders, I've invested in some solar sonar repellant devices and placed some moth balls down a few of his tunnels. I'm praying I don't have to experience that nightmare anytime soon but.....my next door neighbour's lawn is riddled with mole hills and they don't believe in traps. Ugh!
@Dr_No
@Dr_No 6 лет назад
lol. I think I'm a wee bit 'greener' than you as I had fantasised about using napalm.... I've learned that moles are pretty clever little buggers. Tip: wear gloves when you touch and set your traps and rub the trap with soil. Moles have a keen sense of smell and if they smell a human, they'll avoid the trap by first filling it in as a warning to themselves not to go that way and then did up a way around, above or under it. I'm thinking of cleaning out my hair brushes and putting my hair balls down into some tunnels as well as anything else to avoid this problem again.
@Dr_No
@Dr_No 6 лет назад
Did you get your mole yet? I sure to hope so! I'm so happy mine is gone for good and another hasn't shown up .....yet! But, I put a bunch of moth balls down his entrance into my garden and bought some solar-powered vibrating and sound emitting deterrents so I hope to never have to go through that again!

Try setting your yard on fire. If that doesn't work, try flooding your yard with strychnine. If that doesn't work, ask your local military to cluster bomb your yard.

Spear traps really do NOT work in sandy soil as the points dull instantly upon triggering. Squeeze traps work everywhere- easy to use and animal friendly (except for moles). Find a main run and you will get one after every rain that brings up the worms.
@mustangwaterpark
@mustangwaterpark 5 лет назад
yes I agree or run your sprinkler on the lawn. Earthworms are their main staple and water brings the food up to the top.

Have I got a mole story for you. Being in the landscape business. I got a call from a regular customer to clean up the back yard in the autumn which meant to cut back some of the perennials. She has soft sandy soil being close to a creek, and the tunnels the moles create are everywhere. I'm raking up the trimming, and I see in the corner of my eye some underground movement so I stopped, and it's coming closer towards me, and it pops it's head up thru the grass. It's back is towards me, and I hear it say, "ummmmmm, I smell maple syrup!" What the hell? Next I see another lump in the ground, and it's moving in the same direction in the same tunnel, and it pops up out of the same hole and I hear it say, "ummmmm, I smell honey!" Holy shit, two of them. I picked up my plastic rake, so it didn't feel the vibration of it, and I held my breath so it wouldn't smell my breath. Then I see still in the same tunnel, a smaller lump moving towards the other two. It got right underneath them, and try as it might, it just couldn't squeeze thru the other two, and I heard it complain, "hey, all I smell is moleasses." True story.

If this guy was truly an expert he'd know that moles are carnivores and eat undesirable bugs in your lawn. The tunnels they make can help aerate the soil, and they mat down easily. If you still really want to get rid of them however, get rid of the bugs and the moles will go somewhere else on their own for their lunch.
