If you believe labour will do any better, then you're delusional. New Labour between 1997 - 2010 bankrupted this country, bought in so much pc obsessed bureaucracy, opened the floodgates to uncontrolled migration, participated in an illegal war, that this joke Labour party will pull society apart.
Sunack’s apology is meaningless, he knew exactly what he was doing, and as your 1st caller stated, he didn’t want to be seen with credible European leaders !!
Lest we not forget Rishi Sunak partied with Boris Johnson during the Covid 19 pandemic when people were dying alone on their instructions, so should we be surprised Rishi Sunak disrespects the dead of D Day.
I think what makes it worse is that in 5 years time when this ceremony takes place again there will probably be none of the survivors left, as one of them said this will be his last visit to Normandy, a 102 year old died on his way. These men have more morals in their little finger than any conservative. And we now have ex-service people living on the streets, with very little help for their mental health problems and depending on charities to support them, are those the British morals I keep hearing people shout about?
The Tories have utter contempt for the ordinary citizens of this country and in private they disregard their concerns and their needs. Tories only care about the rich wealthy people and their millionaire and billionaire donors. The only time that a Tory cares about the ordinary citizens is when they try to con you out of your vote, they always have and they always will.
agreed , what is worse ? Using the 80th year anniversary of D- Day as a political platform. or Assuming that all those who voted to leave the EU would be against honoring the military veterans of WW2 be it in the resistance or those from other european and commonwealth countries.
“integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level” - Rishi Sunak on Day 1 ''I'm sorry got to go, I've got this TV interview to do instead'' - Rishi Sunak on D-Day Sums it all up doesn't it.
Wants 18 year olds to do 12 month’s national service but can’t do 24 hrs service to the nation. So out of touch with the nation and international leaders as well.
I'm just back from Normandy. I was with a Conservative party member and 2 lifelong Tory voters. None of us could believe it when we were first told he had left France early, honestly thought it was a joke. I do not know what the Conservative party stands for anymore. Rotten to the core.
@@lostintranslation1957 There have only been 7 convicted cases of voter fraud since 1999... all committed by Tories. It's not an issue for the UK - and it only harms those unable to afford ID due to the horrific cost of living crisis we've been put into.
Let's hope you don't vote Labour then,a party that made up a war that killed nearly and million and the 2 decades of chaos that followed.Where are your loathing levels for this atrocity.
My Grandfather came ashore on D day with the Green Howards, and whilst he died when i was only 7, he never spoke of that day or any other he served until he ended his war in Denmark. We only learnt this from my Nan after he'd died. To snub their sacrifice, spent so willingly to ensure others may live free, is unforgiveable! I would be absolutely furious were this not the watershed moment that so many people in this country can FINALLY see the Tories for what they are.
Remember the fuss the right wing made when Corbyn didn't kneel at the Cenetaph? He bowed his head to show his respect and stayed to chat to the veterans afterwards while the rest went off to swig champagne... But the Conservative Prime Minister leaves early? "Oh don't politicise it..."
Fake news is not new. It was not a donkey jacket. It was a green Jaeger overcoat that his wife bought him from Harrods. Donkey jackets are not green nor do they have breast pockets and are known for having leather or later, vinyl on the shoulders. It can be seen pictured in this article The Guardian - From Michael Foot’s ‘donkey jacket’ to Barnard Castle beer … inside the People’s History Museum 10 May 2022
Is that SAS volunteer Michael Foot. Parachuted into wartime France, awarded Croix de Guerre, Legion D`honour, etc.The man who exhibited such courage all his life and yet hated war. Of all the political leaders who were entitled to lay a wreath at the cenotaph since WW2 he surely was paramount.
@jakestilson1947 No. Michael Foot, who was leader of the Labour Party, did not do military service. He was a journalist through the war. He volunteered but was rejected because of asthma. You are thinking of Michael Richard Daniell Foot, CBE, TD (14 December 1919 - 18 February 2012) was a British political and military historian, and former British Army intelligence officer with the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War and was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
That's my theory too, he's ensuring he doesn't get re-elected whilst also trying to save face. But you can't have it both ways, so he's ultimately making himself look like an ar$e. He's clearly not cut out for the role, all his public appearances show a man dying inside.
The one caller who suspected that the PM wanted to avoid photos with continental European leaders explains for me some of the irritating aspects of his apology interview. He emphasized several times that he had attended the British parts (even though many soldiers from across the Commonwealth and other Allies were involved) and he avoided answering the question of whether he wanted to refuse to take part in the events on the French side by saying that he had always wanted to take part in the commemorative events (very careful not to explicitly mention France).
I agree with the first caller. It appeals to his anti Europe/brexit Tories who are on the verge of jumping ship. Notice how he called the British celebration and not s NATO one. The wording was intentional.
I agree with the first caller. It appeals to his anti Europe/brexit base who are on the verge of jumping ship to Reform. Notice how he called the British celebration and not s NATO one. The wording was intentional.
Britain has been shamed on the world stage Yet again. Wake up Brexiteers. This is what happens when you shout about sovereignty, and leave the club. We all look like fools. Time to rejoin the civilised world.
Nah. Remoaners just want to live off of the EU, accepting whatever, whenever, instead of surviving and maybe thriving, if we can change the political system, and maybe, if we're lucky, get decent people as MPs
@knutsfordhouse. When we joined the EU, it was meant only for TRADE it was not meant as a complete take over! Edward Heath sold us down the river. I am old enough to remember when we made our own laws, laws that benefited the British people. We then get told ‘ you can’t do this, and you can’t do that! Those who gave their lives did so at such a young age, they had had such a short life that it is heartbreaking that the Prime Minister could not spend a few hours in gratitude.
The level of disrespect to the fallen is immeasurable, as was brexit to all those like my late father who was awarded 3 medals fighting for peace & a united Europe
Whereas those ignoring the Cenotaph and Churcill's statue getting desecrated during BLM and Palestine "peaceful" protests seem to be making the most fuss
The same manchild was turfed out of Phoenix House veterans workshop in Richmond because he wasn't interested in being there , and he kept looking at his watch. And my boss threw him out. The words used were " if you can't be bothered visiting wounded and disabled veterans, you can fxxk off." And his behaviour in Normandy is just typical.
@itinerant1000 it was a few years ago, way before I started going to the veterans workshop in County Durham. But my boss was one of the founding members who was the one who kicked him out. He told me that a few weeks ago. But I don't think that sunak would actually admit that would he?
Sorry, but, is this really a gaffe?! Gordon Brown didn't have "call woman bigoted on a hot mic" in his diary for weeks leading up to it. Jeb Bush didn't have "Please Clap" written on the teleprompter. This is PREMEDITATED, which means it's either pure idiocy or a tactic.
Exactly. It's not a mistake it's the result of someone having shockingly bad judgement and having no idea what's important to people plus what decency is.
I remember when Michael Foot was leader of the Labour Party in the '80s. The Tory press harangued him mercilessly, claiming that he had disrespected the fallen, their reason for doing so, : he simply wore a donkey jacket to the cenotaph.
Michael Foot was so unfairly maligned. He only ever showed great respect to veteran's. He was a brilliant campaigner for peace and I've got up most respect for him.
I don’t have any links to the veterans of WW2 but even I am disgusted by what Sunak did and how Mercer is defending him, it is indefensible how an interview was deemed more important than recognising the honour, duty and sacrifice of all veterans of D Day 1944, it shows to the country the utter contempt that these politicians have for those who fought for our freedom.
Because they simply don't care about Britain, our history or our people (especially the working class). All they care about is themselves and their bank accounts.
@@chatham43 Yes I do hate the Tories but what I also hate is the utter contempt of politicians towards the men who fought and died for our freedom but just like our soon to be ex Prime Minister, I can tell you are of the same mind.
HOW can you possibly not realise how important this event was? It's literally (for many heroes) a once in a lifetime event. It's celebrating perhaps the most important event in human history. How can you think an ITV interview is more pressing than this. I'm struggling to comprehend the decision.
Maybe because thousands of those young men who died were working class fighting to protect their countries, families and freedom for all, and as far as Sunak is concerned they were doing their job no big deal.
So here's a thought. I'm INCREDIBLY proud of the people of this country today. And I don't always feel that way. The ONLY way Sunak would have thought this was actually possible to get away with, is if his advisors believe our population have been polarised to the same extent as Americas. Where denigrating or disregarding our servicemen and women is now acceptable. But we've proven, categorically, that this isn't the case. That's cause for optimism.
Yes the German chancellor, the US and Canadian president spent time with our veterans where the leader of their country couldn’t be bothered which is a shambles
You could perhaps understand leaving earlier if he had a family emergency or some national emergency but to leave early to record a political interview to cover his lies over lies, is incomprehensible. What a shameful person. It will never be forgotten.
Are we really surprised that a party advocating for rounding people up and shipping them away to be dealt with did not celebrate the sacrifices made in defeating an enemy that rounded people up and shipped them off to be dealth with.
I'd actually say that Sunak's absurd and highly dangerous *'Eat Out To Help Out'* was a WORSE blunder than this. Leaving the D-Day Commemorations was offensive. Eat Out To Help Out actually KILLED people...
Sometimes a person does a thing that opens a window on their soul. Yesterday Sunak did a thing that opened a window on the space where his soul would have been.
Think of it this way. 80 years ago a time portal opened allowing Prime Minister Churchill and all of the allied forces to see into the future only to see that the Prime Minister of the country in 2024 felt that he had better things to do than pay respects to those that would give up their lives...
how could attending a recording for itv that is to be aired first in a week from now be more important than d-day celebrations..? he could have done that recording at anytime after the celebrations in the coming few days and the program for itv could still be aired on time, or is itv so inflexible..?
A lot of people in Red wall seats disliked Corbyn as they thought he wasn't patriotic. How are they going to see Rishi as anything other than unpatriotic too after this? Oh and by the way applause to Dennis Skinner for asking why Farage was celebrating D-day when his side lost😂
@@benwilson6145 I think it's going to be glorious in the very near future. American conservative men are not letting the democrats use tactics that could have come from Lenins little black book if you play the game you realise what the results will be. But conservative men and women will just laugh at the soviet tactics the communist fraction tried . There is even footage of a democrat in office saying New York needs reeducation camps for MAGA . again that's what the Chinese are doing to the Ugures you couldn't make it up
@@benwilson6145 I have tried to talk back but it seems the corporation we are using favours you it's going to be glorious watching this backfire using the law to take out the opposition I'm looking forward to Trump back with a couple of bones to pick
Johnson, Truss, Sunak not hard to see a pattern of incompetence. Then look at the country after 14 years and why is anyone surprised? The challenge facing any incoming government is undoing the damage that's been done.....I am not sure the public fully appreciate the scale of the task.
I believe Sunak was advised to attend but decided not to. That's why his senior advisor has resigned, “It was an act of either colossal stupidity or cynical calculation. “Either way, it revealed to me that while I still embrace a conservative philosophy, I am no longer willing to have it outsourced to a bunch of mendacious, incompetent and disreputable clowns.
It is utterly inexplicable. Even for someone as tone deaf as Sunak. The US President was there along with the French President. Our two key NATO allies. Just... Wow.
He has basically shamed the UK on the international stage and the sheer disrespect he has shown throughout is staggering. The Tories are not just beaten, they are finished. This may well be the end of them as a viable party.
The problem is that this disregard for any kind of compassion or understanding has infected what seems to be the whole of society…normalised callousness reigns now unfortunately.
It's such disrespect to the British soldiers that died. It is looking increasingly like the Tories have no desire to be in power after the election. Neither does Starmer though by the looks of things Second caller lost any sympathy from me when he said he was still thinking of voting Tory quite frankly.
Why Winchester did not prepare the Prime Minister as a young student to understand what D-day means to many British people and the cost to many families in the loss of love ones.
Caller Russ said Sunak lied 12 times. Actually the number of lies was considerably larger than this. Sunak lied 12 times just about the £2,000 tax grab. But there was a further level of disingenuousness about the £2,000. The Tories' bogus calculation was that Labour policies would cost £2,000 over 4 years; Sunak presented this figure as per annum.
The answer for why he did this is simple. He has more regard and concern for his own TV appearance, that he hoped would promote himself politically before the election, than he does for the many soldiers that died in the war, (many of whom were in the military as the were conscripted soldiers, - hold that thought), protecting this country, AND the families of those soldiers, who are still alive, and deserve some respect for the huge loss they suffered and will continue to do so. This despicable incident is sadly nothing new. It is only the latest example of Sunaks disregard, and that of his party for the British people. There is a huge list of occasions when the Tory party have done things, or made decisions that have simply benefited themselves, or their own. Does he not think that we do not notice these incidents, or that the world do not notice them? How very foolish he if he does. His apology in my view has made this situation even worse. It is the kind of apology that we often see people, and institutions make, when they have been caught out. So instead of saying sorry for what they have done, they appear to be saying sorry that their wrong doing has been discovered. Does that sound familiar I wonder?
I'm honestly starting to think he's doing it on purpose now...."well if I'm going down, I'm taking the whole party down with me" kind of attitude lol he knows the Rwanda plan wont/can't work either, and he's trying to move to America, so he doesn't want to be here anymore, but I do think he's trying to annihilate the whole party with him 😂 that's how it's looking to me anyway with how bad it's going 😂
There is an old adage in politics, which is also very much a truism, that oppositions do not win elections, incumbents lose them: Rishi appear to have adopted this as his election strategy.
Most Brits have a grandparent who fought in WWII. His parents immigrated to the UK in the 60s. He has few ties to WWII/ British history and values and he doesn’t seem to understand the electorate.
