LC39A Flame Trench - 28 April 2011

The day before the first launch attempt of Endeavour on STS-134, I and a coworker went out to LC39A to document the placement of pressure, heat, and temperature sensors on the SRB side of the main flame deflector inside the flame trench. This video gives an idea of what conditions are one day before a shuttle launch. The dripping water that you hear is from the water deluge system which is filled and primed to douse the launch pad at liftoff for sound suppression and heat mitigation.

Very cool video! Those caps that are in the nozzles for the SRBs, they are intended to keep moisture out of the chamber and to prevent accidental ignition of the solid fuel. The shuttle program brings back memories for me as a kid. I grew up watching the space shuttle launches, and I have a Houston Chronicle issue with Atlantis on the cover.

This is one of the coolest videos I've ever seen; I've always wondered what the flame trench looked like. What's with all the red marks like spray paint; are those areas of fatigue that have been marked off?
@gastonbell108
@gastonbell108 2 года назад
Super late reply, but yes, the flame trench usually needs repairing after every launch. It was actually given a full overhaul after the end of the shuttle program and now the actual flame deflector (the diagonal wall) is covered in steel plates, which are much cheaper to replace after a launch than tearing up and repouring the concrete each time. The actual trench itself has firebrick covering over concrete.

@aleto136 These are water bags to dampen the shockwaves at booster ignition. They were installed after Columbia suffered severe damage at her first liftoff. She lost some tiles and the body flap was nearly ripped off.
@toonytox6772
@toonytox6772 6 лет назад
If they was in that flame trench when those SRBs lit they would be dead from the shock wave alone, not to mention the acoustics from the ssme's already running. So yeah I don't think they would even feel the fire blast at all, They would probably explode from the acoustic shock wave first.

Thank you!!! I've been searching for a long time for videos or pictures of the flame trench. This is the first one I've found. Great video (high quality, very informative)! It seems that the two SRBs are almost wider than the trench (which I assumes dates back to the Saturn V launches. Are there covers (red?) over the ends of the SRBs? I assume that's what is being shown near the end - something to keep out the debris and weather until launch.

that looks to me like signs of the concrete having melted slightly. I know you can't melt concrete as such but it looks distressed for sure. how on earth are you allowed in that area knowing that the two biggest fireworks ever are above you. if either lit off you're toast!

@KSparks80
@KSparks80 5 лет назад
If anyone is still reading these comments, I read awhile back that the dB level of the shuttle exhaust was "calculated" as 215 dB. 194.09 dB is as high as the actual dB level can go, as it becomes a shock wave (instead of a sound wave) above this level. I guess you'd never hear it as the calc'd dB level of 190 dB to 195 dB, 50% of human ear drums rupture. From 198 dB to 202 dB, it's fatal!

@MajorCaliber
@MajorCaliber 11 лет назад
Is the flame deflector still on rails, as during Apollo? On the "abused" working slope of the deflector, are the sensors you're responsible for embedded in the "shiny spots" that appear somewhat like bullet impacts? Dish the details. ;^) Flame Trench: On Launch Day, thee place to put consumer-grade disk drives you absolutely positively do NOT want any data recovered from, ever! :D
@richardmillhousenixon
@richardmillhousenixon 4 года назад
or, y'know, just melt the disk drives with a MAPP torch
@gastonbell108
@gastonbell108 2 года назад
The shiny spots are areas that need to be repaired - this was the old Apollo era deflector & trench from the shuttle program days. It was rebuilt in 2018 with steel plates on the deflector and new firebrick on the trench. The firebrick lasts for several launches, and the plates are cheaper to replace each time than having to dig out and repour the concrete.

I never said anything about the allegations of Russian involvement, so the fact that you brought it up says that you think there is something to defend, whereas if it were indeed true that no collusion occurred, there would be no need for you to bring it up if I did not either. Here's Newsweek talking about how the national debt has ballooned by over 5.2 Trillion since January 20th of 2017, where the debt had only increased by barely over 6 trillion over Obama's EIGHT YEARS in office. www.newsweek.com/national-debt-has-increased-52-trillion-during-trumps-3-years-president-1503864 It does cost money to support a welfare state. But here's the thing, we would have that money if people would finally get it through their heads that increasing taxes by just .1$ for the wealthy would pretty easily pay for that, not to mention the fact that it is far cheaper for the taxpayers to pay for preventative healthcare for all than it is for them to have to pay for the pricey ER bills for those who can't afford insurance and so have no choice but to let medical conditions become medical emergencies before they seek treatment. Next time, have some sources to back up your claims.
