"Le régiment de Sambre-et-Meuse" - French army song 

For those who don’t understand French and want to know if the lyrics are accurate, I will just clarify some parts of the lyrics that are easily understood in French but not in English. “Tous ces fiers enfants de la Gaule” Explanation : Gaulle was considered to be the original French people before they were invaded by the Germanic Frankish, so it basically saying they are proud descendants from Gaule. This makes sense because the idea of nationalism was born during the French Revolution, specially because the revolutionaries said : Long live the nation! Along with Long live the Republic or Long live Liberty. The motto was used to counter the motto of the royalists that said : "long live the king". For the revolutionaries, the nation (people) was more important than the king or the church. “Allaient sans trêve et sans repos” Explanation : It just means they advanced for their ideals for a very long time without any pause or rest. That is because during the revolutionary wars and specially under Napoleon’s command, the French armies were reputed for their speed because they were obligated to advance very fast to surprise the enemy. “Avec leurs fusils sur l’épaule, courage au cœur et sac au dos” Explanation : They had to travel immense lengths so they always had to carry something, which includes provisions but most importantly determination and courage. “La Gloire était leur nourriture, ils étaient sans pain sans souliers” Explanation : Basically the French revolutionaries, specially the Napoleonic army of Italy which was given poor provisions by the national convention, were sometimes forced to eat not more than one meal a day or sometimes they didn’t even eat for a day. So if they lacked food, their only motivation to advance was victory. So the seek for victory was actually their only food. The french army of Italy under Napoleon’s command is an example, cuz a lot of soldiers didn’t even have shoes. The regiment of sambre et Meuse was not under napoleonic command, but they were very courageous because sometimes they were doing charges to the death. Napoleon focused in determination and strategy, the regiment of sambre et mesure (northern French army) focused on determination and sacrifice. “La nuit ils couchaient sur la dure avec leur sacs pour oreillers” Explanation : it just means they slept with what they had. And the real translation is not "their pack behind their head" but "their pack [used] as pillows". In French it sounds good, but not when translated to another language so the english translator probably changed it to make it sound better for the English language, tho the original words sound better in French. “Le régiment de sambre et Meuse marchait toujours au cri de liberté” Explanation : cri is more like to the cry or to the shout of Liberty. Liberty was a major ideal during the French and American Revolutions, which both believed that the universe was the fight of Liberty vs tyranny I will pass some lyrics that don’t need explanation “Le nombre eut raison du courage, un soldat restait le dernier” Explanation : The meaning of the translation is right, but not the words. Raison means Reason. Basically the number had gained reason over courage. But the lyrics make sense so no problem with this one. “Il se défendit avec rage, mais bientôt fut fait prisonnier” Explanation : The lyrics match the words but the French words mean different in this situation. Is not soon he’ll be a prisoner, it is actually that he is already made as a prisoner because he is surrounded probably. Yes there is the word soon, but in this case it doesn’t mean he will be prisoner, but he is already prisoner. Yes french language is complicated. “En voyant ce soldat farouche, l’enemie pleura sur son sort.” Explanation : just to be more precise, when the translation says : the enemy swept over his fate, it is talking about the fate of the hero (french revolutionary) and not over theirselves, cuz the enemy is surrounding the hero. You have to remember that sambre et Meuse is a sacrificed army during the Revolutionary wars. Basically it means that even the enemies of the french revolutionaries admire their courage (they admire the courage of the french) and have pity even if they know the fate of the hero is dead cuz he is surrounded. “Le hero pris une cartouche, jura et se donna la m0rt ” Explanation : the true translation is more soft, is not that the hero k1ll3d himself, but rather the hero gave himself d3ath. And final explanation when they say they seek immortality, it is a metaphor to say they seek to be remembered in history, because great heroes never d1e, they just fade away

Fun Fact: Only one College in America preforms this song at their football game. The Ohio State University marching band a.k.a. "The Best Dawn Band In The Land" plays Le Regiment when doing their famously known Script Ohio. Such a classic song, Le Regiment de Sambre - Et- Meuse Mon ami de France amour d'Amerique!

Ah, le moment où ils parlent "d'enfant de la Gaule" au lieu "d'enfant de la France" c'est parce qu'à cette époque on redécouvrait les gaulois et, même si c'était approximatif, on cherchait à se former un mythe national. Nous en savons plus désormais, mais le fait qu'ils privilégient l'appellation de Gaule à celle de France est bien emblématique de l'époque ^^ De plus, c'est assez incroyable d'avoir fait une défaite aussi marquante une gloire par la chanson.
