Matthew Le Tissier scored a hat-trick in England's 4-1 'B' international defeat of Russia at Loftus Road. Despite his sterling performance, in a bitter-sweet end to his international career manager Glenn Hoddle failed to select Le Tissier for the full 1998 world cup squad, or even the preliminary 30 man squad.

a GamePlaya England could've used Matthew Le Tissier for penalty shootouts in an England shirt. He's very lethal from the spot.

@@jays5909 didn’t like a lot of decent in form players tbh, played mcmanaman and fowler so little because they didn’t think hiring a mystic for team preparation was ideal and they asked her who was gonna win the 3:15 horse race so they could bet on it lol. Hoddle was a strange guy

Everything that's been said about Le Tissier's England career was also said about Hoddle's when he was a player. Just pure spite on the manager's part.

England would've had a World Cup then if Hoddle would've gotten over his spite and selected Le God. The greatest player in the world at the time. But England is so much accustomed to picking on spite. Like leaving out Beckham in the Olympic team when his spot-kicking would've made the difference. England pays for its arrogance. Always has.

Went to this game. Only Hoddle's ego prevented the most naturally gifted footballer of his generation (along with Gazza) going to a World Cup. Other managers would have built a team around Le God

I remember as a kid seeing this result and brief highlights and wondering what more he needed to do to get into the England team for the World Cup. Hoddle was a good progressive manager in some respects, but he was also an absolute mug in other respects. Leaving him and Gazza at home just so he could control the dressing room.

@@kazman_6899 You've left out Gazza, who scored arguably the best goal of the tournament, Shearer who was easily the tournament's top goal scorer, and Sheringham who made a brilliant partnership with him. You have selected Barnes and Platt, both of whom were past their best by this point, especially Barnes who was carrying a gut. And you've added in Merson, who was dealing with drugs issues, and who barely played in the run up to the games let alone in the finals. You've gone for an all out Arsenal defence, who would've gotten creamed by Spain, and left out Pearce who played phenomenal, and Neville, who was the only player that could operate on the flank and in a three man defence. I mean.... Winterburn 😂

Ian Wright has been very vocal in saying that he thought it was the right decision to leave Gascoigne out. He was really having serious problems at that time, and Wright described the situation before and after Gascogine was told he was not in the squad as being terrible. But with Gascoigne out there could be no excuse for leaving out Le Tissier. Personally I would have tried to have taken them both, but Gascogine needed professional evaluation at that time. It was the start of his serious mental problems.
