Not bad idea. But in many cases the lead grid which is the current collector is badly damaged.

@@cayrex I think this is true in very old batteries but many fail prematurely from be left in a flat state to long and the acid turns to water and the sulpher Coates the plates

In basic is easy to do but you need to be careful when you do this. You have electro and thermal process to make a PbO2. For electro method you need Pb metal bar, 20-30% H2SO4 and some negative epectrode like copper or carbon. Put the Pb which is conected to the positive of your power supply into H2SO4 solution and also the carbon which is conected to the negative. Power up and wait. The Pb will start to form a oxide layer, which is in dark color. The thermal reaction is if you heat a lead nitrate,... and I the end you will get PbO. But this thermal method is toxic like hell! And is not good to make at home in some small room. The difference between "normal" lead acid and deep cycle batteries is only in the thickness of the electrodes. The deep cycle battery have thicker electrodes as starter lead acid battery,... all the rest is same.

I've tried acrylic concrete patch repair from hardware store.

I soak the negative lead electrode (standart negative lead electrode - lead grid + lead powder) into activated carbon ink, which was made from activated carbon and binder (polyester or epoxy). Yes you can also make a mix from lead powder and AC in 50:50 ratio. Hmm, performance,... reduced weight, less evolution of hydrogen, cycle life. Look on internet,.... some papers report cycle life over 10k cycles. In that case 3000 or 2000 cycles will not be a problem, but the cycles are depended on DoD (deep of discharge)

@@cayrex well there are several lead carbon on the market..they claim can reach 3500 cycles with 80 percent dod..but on furukawa test only 3000 cycles with 50 percent dod.. Btw what kind of binder u use..thanks..

All is posible. The lead battery will only have a tube shape. Like tubular lead acid battery. You can make tubular lead battery with lead foil (+PbO2 active material) and lead foil (-Pb powder). Or you make like is made zinc carbon battery.... lead housing, inside is the separator which is filled with PbO2 and lead rod for current collector,... in basic!

In basic you can make it easy,.... you have your PVC tube. Then melt the lead and pour a little bit into the tube and wait that the lead will be hard. On the top of that lead you add lead powder and press it. On that lead powder you add a separator. Then you add PbO2 powder and again you press a bit that powder. And for the finish you pour again the melted lead. When the lead is hard you press the cell that you make a good contact of all materials. For the end you need to add electrolyte into the cell. You make a small hole in the area where is located Pb powder and also PbO2 powder in the PVC pipe. Fill the electrolyte and seal the holes. You make 6 cells that way.

@@misoracic8892 you glue the tube to bowl and you fill the bowl with cold water,.... but not the pipe. In that case the lead will be hard quickly. Use the separator from sealed lead acid battery which is used for modeling. The separator is glass fibers.

Just make a ink from activated carbon and some binder like PVA, Sbr,.... and you will be fine.

the easy way is if you use adjustable power supply,... in this case you can set to 2.5V and charge the cell like a boss (on ebay or amazon you can get some cheap power supply). Hmm the capacity,..... the best is if you have a electronic load, but if you dont have the electronic load than you can use a small motor and you also need a multimeter.

Yes but Like Electron Proton N.... Mouron said,.... is better if your carbon source have good conductivity and surface area if you get low conductivity than you need to add some graphite. You need a mix of lead powder and carbon material. Yes you can use epoxy for your binder,.... use in ratio 8:2 or 9:1 (active material : binder). If you use epoxy than in this case you need some time that the electrolyte will soak in. Also you need a good pressing that your active material will have good contact to the lead grid.

Then you get a capacitor effect. Discharge curve will be more capacitor like. The voltage and the capacity will be lower. 1.8 - 1.9V and around 27Wh/kg.

Yes that is the firefly technique and is not the only method to do it. You have many designs and technique to make a lead carbon battery.

@@cayrex I wish you would do one battery using carbon foam and putting lead inside the pores of the foam with lead acetate and negative electroplating of the foam. You will find that if you make BOTH plates like this that when you change the positive plate any lead crystal will oxide to lead oxide and then you do not need any man made lead plate, you make oxide of lead right inside the carbon board when first charging cell! Now both plates can be carbon/lead and you just oxidize one carbon plate (positive) at time of charging, it is so easy, cheap and powerful. Very cheap and lasts long time but you need this special porous charcoal wood plates in big sheets. If you GOOGLE you can find. Better will be a PU carbonized open pore foam,... which is soaked into lead acetate, then electroplated to form a lead layer on foam skeleton.
