Just finished up coaching the fall season of soccer for all three of my kids this weekend & I’ve 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀. This year was the first year I purposefully treated the kids like adults, with the strategies & tactics suggested in all the books I've read & my past experience leading teams.
💡 What I’ve learned is whether you are 4 or 24 or 44 or 64, we all want the same things from our leaders. So I thought I’d share my leadership insights with you today that come from working with these rec-league teams.
Will’s 5 Teamwork Thinking Topics:
⚽ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲. We must talk to each other. We need to understand who the people on our team are and what they care about. We don’t have to be best friends but we have to find a way to have open dialog. Be specific in your requests and expectations.
⚽ 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. Catch them doing good. We are a team. We support each other. We want support from each other. Of course, document the things that didn’t go well, and the changes you want to make in the future, but never provide that feedback in the moment someone has make a mistake. They know they messed up, show them and tell them that you are there to support them.
⚽ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹. In the business world, this is what my friend Ray Attiyah would call RUN. I might call this “Master Your Skills.” Empower your team with the skills & knowledge & resources they need to run the business effectively. Do the basics well, when you can block & tackle then you can strategize. In soccer this means passing and dribbling and shooting and turning and trapping the ball.
⚽ 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲. This is the “Share Your Strategy” step. A leader sets the strategy of the organization, but you also must communicate the strategy to succeed. I’m a firm believer that defense wins games, and I make it clear that everyone plays defense. And we believe the best defense is an aggressive attack of the ball. We also strongly believe in backing each other up, this way you know someone has your back when you attack. This is the strategy!
⚽ 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻! This is absolutely the most important part of teamwork. When we work together, when we communicate, when we are empowered to do our job with the skills we need and we are positively supporting each other, we will and do have fun. We should all want to have fun at work and at play. Even with a loss. The kids reminded me of this multiple times this season and it’s the best learning I’ve taken from coaching them.
💡 Who out there is coaching kids sports? What are some of the leadership insights you’ve gleaned? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Until next time, ask youself:
