Ok…so the dog opener was a bit weird but sorry, this guy lost all credibility with me by giving credit to Blanchard for inventing situational leadership when West Point wrote and taught me the book on it in the early 80’s. He then goes on to example the military for its “potato peeling transactional leadership”. Did you ever serve? Didn’t think so. Yep. Don’t lie and don’t fake it. But know what you’re talking about! This is the worst talk I’ve ever seen on the topic of leadership vs management. So when you ask yourself what would Max do, my bet is he’d catch the Goldman Sachs lecture instead, next time around.
The military is the one place where leaders eat last, the care and protection of your troops is paramount, and developing their leadership down to and beyond Corporal is an essential part of the job; then the 'leader' needs to manage, needs to ensure supplies and logistics are coordinated with attack and maneuver, and that the troops are properly trained and capable for the mission; that the mission is well defined and supported.
