Leaf Prints~Gelli Plate~4 Techniques~Full Tutorial~Soul of an Artist Series Dig
The gelli plate is pure magic in my eyes.
To be able to take textures from nature, like leaves, and capture their beauty to use in our artwork is so easy on this amazing tool.
Gelli plate leaf prints are just one idea to inspire you and create a springboard to jump off into making amazing textures with the gelli plate.
I hope you enjoy making some of these as much as I have. Happy printing!

I too think of artwork as therapy. I also believe it is a form of meditation. I started painting when my mother passed away as an outlet for my grief. Since then it is turned into a passion. And I am looking forward to getting back to it and working with my breath and soothing music as I do so. It is a deep form of personal therapy for me.

Well said. I’m sorry you lost your mom. I lost mine when I was 25. I haven’t been able to do a lot of artwork lately, but excited to get back to it. Happy painting! ☺️🎨

Pull the ones that leave blank spaces on paper that already has a geometric print on it. Especially when you’re working with dark colours, you’ll have the geometric bits showing through. It could even be a floral print, polka dots, whatever you want to have fill in the white leaves

It isn’t my personal style, however, I suppose you could doodle into the blank white spaces where the leaves once were. If I saw the right doodle I would know. But as a person without doodling talent I would just put some other layer over it for texture. But that’s just me. You do you! Art is subjective. Peace to you.
@KorysArtCafe
@KorysArtCafe 2 месяца назад
Yes, it is very subjective. I watch videos where I don’t necessarily resonate with the artist’s taste, but I still learn a lot of technique that way. I think it’s a beautiful thing. When we turn our own direction, it’s our power in expressing ourselves uniquely. 🥰

An idea for the first leaf paper pull. Maybe create a heavily patterned or multi colored paint pattern that is somewhat transparent and use it over the bright white leaves. Maybe mixing in metallics. Stencils or even more leaf patterns maybe.

😊Without 5aping the paper, you could lift half of the paper, remive leaves, place down to line up positive and negative images. Repeat on other half. I use 1/4" fun foam under rubber stamps. I keep a dollar store kitty litter pan with water and Murphys Oil Soap in it. I toss stencils, brayers, stamps, even gelbplates in for easy clean up later. Botanicals are my favorite use of my gelbplate. To fill in negative leaf shapes, i line to print a layer with strings and yarns and eyelash yarn. Good info on Titanium white binding too strongly with rice and printer paper. 8 do like the way ir pulls on cardstock abd Bristol paper. Great tutorial!

Around 43:45 you ask about ideas for negative space prints. I think since this particular print you are holding is landscape it would work really well folded in half, used as a junk journal page and journaling would be beautiful in the negative space.

Kory, I just came across your tutorial & am I ever glad I did. I'm starting out trying to use my geli plate but I'm not "artistic" & have been struggling to be satisfied with the results. I gather one reason may be that I'm using acrylic paint from the Dollar store as I didn't want to spend a lot of money on better quality paint until I knew if I'd enjoy it or not. You give such concise instructions & you speak slowly & clearly & I appreciate that. I am going to check out a couple more of your videos. It's Jan/24 now so it's too late for me to go out & collect leaves right now as evergreens are all that's available. I'm going to bookmark this & in the spring try again after rewatching this. Thank you & Happy New Year from the west coast of Canada!

Thank you so much! I’m glad you like this. Yes, when you get some leaves, give this a try. Everyone who uses a gelli plate experiences frustration. Cheap paint works ok, but higher quality paint does work better, of course. You can thin your paints down a little bit with water and see if that helps. Don’t give up. I find that I love a lot of layers if I’m not leaf printing when it comes to the gelli plate. Happy printing!

You had asked if anyone knew what to do with your first pull from your leaf print. If you were to use a colorful paper to do the pull. The leaves would mask some of the area so when you pulled the print it would look like the leaves were a mask over the colored paper . You would see the leave pattern over the beautiful colored paper

Great inspiration .... Thanks! Did you ever take your first pull print and lay it down (paint side up) then take your jelly plate and flip it over on top of that print and lay it down to push the details down onto the paper. Since the plate is transparent, you'll be able to position it easier. Just a thought ... I think I'll give that a try myself. Good luck

Hi Kory, beautiful work. Thank you so much for sharing. I wonder if when you take the leaves off the plate after a pull, and while the paint on the leaves is still wet, you give the painted side of the leaves a light spritz with water before lying them down onto background paper to print, whether the spritzed water might help get a better printed image?

Curious how these techniques work for you with tissue paper. I personally like creating collage papers using tissue paper because it’s so transparent and just melts into the background of my art journal. Whereas copy paper is thicker and I find a bit harder to use in art journals. Just curious if you’ve tried these techniques with tissue paper and how were the results?

@KorysArtCafe
@KorysArtCafe Месяц назад
Sure! I’m sorry you’re having trouble and frustration! I totally get it with the gelli plate. Had my share too. You need to leave your paper on for at least 10 minutes. It’s gotta soak up all the paint and you can’t pull a print quickly when you have dry layers. I like to use mixed media paper, because it’s thicker than printer paper, and thinner than watercolor paper. I really hope this helps! Let me know how you do. You got this! ☺️🎨
