You NEVER tell your enemy what you are going to do/not do. Leave him guessing and speculating. If asked "Will NATO put boots on the ground in Ukraine." The answer "Nothing is off the table." And leave it at that.

I was a child in the 70's and 80's. We lived under the constant threat of nuclear war. Sorry, but threats of nuclear war just doesn't scare me. Hasn't for a very long time now.

Publicly stating that there would be "no boots on the ground" was not a tactical measure, but a political one.

What the General is saying is that the US showed its hand 10 years ago, and Putin has been playing against that hand perfectly. Thinking that Putin was Gorbachev was the first mistake and a big one.

Among European NATO members, the United Kingdom and France are the only ones with nuclear retaliatory capabilities. I think Putin needs to fear that retaliation as well.

General, I appreciate your insights, but you were not around in 1972 when DeGaulle concluded that a US president would never use nukes to defend Europe because of US fear of nuclear damage to the US. He developed his own nuclear capability. Macron is remembering that and hinting that France will do what it takes to prevent a danger to France and Europe.

He says Russia might need to resort to nukes quicker. Then he breezily talks about wanting to cause Putin to worry. This madman is one of our modern leaders who WANT a conventional war with Russia, think they can inflict a defeat on Russia and that Russia will never dare hit back inside NATO or go nuclear. Sickening. And to hear the interviewer saying we should be showing more "backbone" like it's a schoolyard dispute.

General Philip Breedlove makes a valid assessment overall that makes sense. The one weak point is he falls back on the old belief of avoiding politics as a military man. Yet, in this conflict, politics are literally playing a rare and active massive role in military decision-making in Europe and Russia that translates to real-world consequences on the battlefield and the direction of the conflict. To not include the role and effects of certain politics is to miss a major component that is as important as nuclear weapons or drones/missiles in the understanding of how to prosecute the conflict etc. One has to leave their comfort zone sometimes.

Most of the problem is due to General Breedloves MASSIVE incompetence

Soviet Union was the beast, they had a lot of satellite states to do the fighting, not the overall Russians before the wall came down. They are not the buggy man when it just them. Ukraine is showing them with people off the streets getting trained quickly, not well-trained military force. It would not be good for them; His threats of nuclear war should tell you how scared he is.

A dictator on one side, only has to agree with himself. Ever debating democracies on the other side, spoiled by 2 generations without war on their own territory and unprecedented prosperity, are easily spooked and frightened: "We are not going to do this, that, and the other.."

The annoyance I have is this perception that Russia's use of nukes is a one way street. I have zero doubt that western nukes are better maintained and more likely to work as advertised. Notwithstanding the effectiveness of tactical nukes is limited anyway. It's more chest beating and threats. If there is concern, NATO/Western nations need to come out and categorically state this will not be tolerated period. Heck Biden stated well over a year ago that if Russia used tactical nukes the US conventional response alone would see them crippled.

With what has been reported here, from what is vaguely and generally inferred in other reports, I don't know that the people of Russia have much power at all to change the political direction of their country. With the strangle-hold in place there seem to be few options likely to end with anything other than severe repercussions for those who OPENLY try to effect any change for the better. We can wish them all the love and light in the world, donate what we can to the efforts in Ukraine and hope beyond hope that there are discussions going on behind the scenes in the covert world, pray further and better for military and intelligence personnel . And BEG the media to shut up stay out of it. The less they dig, question and blab, the better and safer for troops on the ground.
