Leaky Oil Filter Hose Replacement for Ford 4.6 and 5.4

Some F150s have remote oil filters which creates a vulnerability that is essential to know about. This 1998 F150 has the oil filter located under the bumper on the drivers side. The oil lines run to the engine or to the engine oil cooler, depending on the options that the truck has. If the crimps begin to leak, the lines could separate, causing immediate engine failure. This is what happened on this short bed, regular cab F150. The replacement part that I used was a Sunsong 5801282 oil cooler line kit which worked well but needed some modification. Dorman 625-201 is an alternate option but has been known to have some leakage issues. Alternatively you can use the OE Motorcraft part, but it is likely to leak again eventually and is very expensive.

I’m so glad that I found your channel because I wasn’t sure where my oil leak was coming from. I thought it was from my oil filter I never seen a set up like this on a 4.6 and this is my second Ford F150 4.6 thank you so much for the information I am truly grateful.

The advise on the o-rings was a time and headache saver, ordering them separate at the same time

Keep in mind, the Sunsong hoses do not have the greatest threads for the oil pressure sender. The original motorcraft sender would absolutely not hand tighten into the port whereas it threads perfectly into the motorcraft hoses. Forcing it in with a wrench was easily going to cause cross threading. Not really sure why it worked well in this example, but I did not have the same experience.

Thank you for making this video. This is one of the few I have found on the oil cooler line replacement. If you could can you make other videos on common repairs for this model of truck.

Any clue on how to remove the engine side mount? Idk what to even call it. Both bolts currently rusted into it. Was able to remove hose but now stuck. I see like 1 bolt and one giant looking Allen bolt.

I believe mine had 10mm nuts on studs.

Did you ever figure this out? I am having the same issue. The 10 mm studs snapped off and are now stuck. I need to remove the engine side mount you are referring to in order to drill out the snapped studs.

You didn’t replace the oil filter adapter gasket or drain the coolant ?

If you are just replacing the remote filter lines, you don't need to get into the oil cooler/adapter on the engine block. In the event that I ever get a leak there, I will replace it or possibly delete the cooler all together, but it doesn't scare me nearly as much as 25 year old rubber lines for your engine oil!

Come to find out this is also a problem with the earlier Triton engines, although in that case most of the time the oil cooler is between the filter and engine block, in the usual place. It has coolant lines running to and from it. Apparently due to overtightening of the oil filter, the cooler gets inadvertently loosened during oil change and the gaskets wear out. I'm in the process of troubleshooting my '99 E350 that went from "just fine" to "oil pressure emergency" about 2 miles from home. I pulled over within a few seconds and immediately shut the engine off. Didn't hear anything amiss but I'm not sure I got to it in time.

Wow, that is no good! It really isn't a great design. This is a "Triton" also. I think some had remote oil filters and some didn't. And the ones that didn't are a real pain to get to the filter... But the ones that do are prone to blowing off a line. Did you have any drips before your catastrophic oil blowout?

You are welcome! I have heard a few stories of these hoses blowing on the highway so it is definitely worth tackling the job if you have a f150 with the remote lines.

Thanks for the video and the information about the o-rings. My father has a 98 f150 and the hoses are leaking pretty bad at the crimps. So I looked into replacements and came across the Sunsong lines. I typed in the part number on google to see if I could find any reviews and your video was the first thing that showed up lol. How are these hoses still working for you? Any updates? Thanks

I just took a peek under the truck and the oil lines look brand new still.

Does all 99 4×4 5.4 trucks have oil hoses and coolers? Thanks

This one is a 1998. I believe at some point (maybe 1999) they stopped putting remote oil filters with hoses. But the filters on those ones are insanely annoying to change. They are tucked way up in there.

How about the transmission on them I had the same truck it's at the Triton in it but my check my transmission fluid and it was dark at one time now it's like black now I don't know if to change it or what to do with it but it's like you know

I would probably just have it changed. The transmission in this truck went out on my drive home from transferring the title (101k miles). The fluid definitely should not be black. Does it smell burnt, like one of the internal clutch packs might be going?

What are the specs on your wheels and tires?
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 4 месяца назад
They are Nitto Terra Grappler LT305/70R16/10 124Q, and the wheels are American Racing AR172 16X10 5X135 POLISHED -25MM - AR1726135. It is a stock 4x4 with the torsion bars turned up just a tiny bit to level it out. I had to trim the plastic on the lower bumper valence, but other than that, there was no rubbing. The wider wheels keep the inside of the tire at about the same place, but put the outside of the tire out a couple inches which lines right up with the fender flares.

@CoolStuffGuysLike Год назад
Oh no! Yeah that is what I was concerned about with mine. I have heard a few horror stories of that happening. You probably have about ten seconds from when it blows off till the engine is toast and I am not sure how quick the oil pressure gauge is at responding.
@Masonfrost22

Update! I replaced the lines and surprisingly, the motor still runs fine! It has a knock now, but considering I was going 40 when it happened and the motor didn’t rip itself apart Is amazing. I have a replacement 4.6 to put in it when this one stops working. But for a 250k mile engine that’s been towing all its life and had that happen really shows the older Ford trucks are meant to last!
