The Purple Tunnel People were stuck in the Purple Tunnel of Doom for hours and hours with the expectation that there would eventually be a Purple Gate where people with Purple Tickets would pass through to the Purple Section. Bummer.
One Person Decided to sing after they were passed a note which gave them the choice of sing or else somewhere in the crowd a hidden sniper would draw a bead on them.
I can't remember ever seeing this before, or even hearing about this. But this video says so much, no matter what life throws at us, we can cope. These amazing people banded together and sang , all people from all races, cultures joined together , it shows that more people in this world cares for one another more than we're all lead to believe. It's videos like this that gives us hope.
@@Loguigi You might not have been alive yet to understand just how deep it was. There were thousands of people that had tickets to go see Barack Obama get sworn in as president in 2009, but were denied entry because there were over 1.8 million people in attendance. The secret service held them in that tunnel because all the roads were closed.
@@ggrtpgg2517 All the people up top on the side and the middle Come together lets all form and swamp just a little Just let it gradually build from the front to the back All you can see is a sea of people some white and some black Don't matter what color, all that matters we gathered together To celebrate for the same cause don't matter the weather
Something about mass people putting aside Beliefs, Political, religion and skin color aside all come together and sing a song we all love almost makes a grown man cry.
@@lunasanti1946 yeah, there are a number of comments here about the power of music to bring people together, trying to make it apolitical, and like... I'm pretty sure at the time it was very specifically about the joy and wonder of having a Black President in a country that had ended the most brutal era of slavery humanity has ever seen a little over a century and half before (not to mention all the many forms of racism that ensued in the intervening years). It wasn't even really about Obama as a person, it was about all the possibility of that moment. A door opened that can never be closed again.
For context: The people in this tunnel were waiting to see President Obama get inaugurated for the first time. The atmosphere was very hopeful and energetic because he was the first black president in American history and it truly felt like times were changing.
Really? I asked BC I was trying to figure out why they were in there like that and the stupid description says ppl waiting on purple tunnel hoping to come out to a purple gate to pass through with a purple ticket. And I'm like wtf...surely not no one would do that..then I flashed back to the Qanon or whatever it was that ppl though trump was or whatever where they believe some really crazy off wall shit and it makes me think well if they can believe that nonsense so these ppl thought maybe a purple gate was out there isnt so unbelievable...lol...
@@heatherking4151 it was just a joke - a 2009 meme title and description. People were big into cutesy type “doom” and rAnDoM jokes back then. More like Invader Zim than Qanon haha
This video should be seen by everyone. There was no fighting, swearing or hate. Just a large group of people singing a song that we all need in our hearts in these times if need. Thank you RU-vid for this great inspirational video. ❤️😭👏👍
My sister and I were in that tunnel and took part in singing that song. It kept on going long after this video stops. We all used it to keep our spirits up, to keep up hope that we'd get out of the tunnel, and it helped to warm everybody up. Definitely one of my favorite memories of that day.
@@Rosepriest23 it was for Obama’s inauguration back in 09. I was living in northern Virginia then. All these people had tickets to see his inauguration but the police messed up and sent them the wrong way into the tunnel and they never made it to the inauguration. They call it purple tunnel because the tickets were separated by color and theirs were purple.
I want to be apart of something like this one day. Just a random situation where a huge crowd starts singing. You're body is covered in chills because you've just witnessed the greatness of humanity.
You know, in the news and media it's hard to believe that anything good comes from humans. But man if a large group of humans singing isn't one of the most beautiful things... Edit: This comment was about the beauty of a large group of people singing together, not about tyrannical governments. While denying that it can happen is bad, shoving it in people faces when they are trying to be happy is worse. If you have political qualms, take it to a place where it can be useful or where it could help change someone's mind.
@@outsidersview9827 well of course, but power-hunger can be awoken, it can be abused, and quite often, is. Denying it doesn't help, acknowledging it and rejecting it, that is the way to defeat it. Most people subconsciously do, but, some dont
@@outsidersview9827 also, governments becoming and being tyrannical is unaffected by us, they don't care what we do. They just want power and to hold that power
Maybe you could try adding some context to this video, this was a tunnel underneath the national Mall that people gathered prior to getting shuffled into a viewing area to see the first Barack Obama inauguration 2009, Washington DC.
I was wondering what the Purple People/Tunnel was all about. Thank you. In Cincinnati there is a Purple People Bridge that crosses the Ohio river. It was a bridge designated unsafe for the weight of vehicle traffic so it was repainted and designed for foot traffic only. The riverfront on both sides is very active and fun so it made perfect sense. So when I saw "Purple Tunnel" I thought hmmmmm. Thanks again for clearing my confusion. Merry Christmas to all.
@@oomphlagwumpla650 for real! I had to make sure no one hears what im listening, theres onetime i was listening to fireworks by Katy perry, mind you im a dude in highschool, when i remove my headphones it plays on my speaker instead and everyone hears it.
I wish we could keep it like this but without the virus or the blm rioting over a someone whom does not deserve to be alive at all for what he has done (p3d0) I mean I wouldn't want to go back to that in the video lol being herded like sheep lol
Wow, ... That crowed but all of them singing did help them. A moment they don't need "somebody to lean on" but need they need to sing. God bless you all.
@@benjaminmellingen5340 I don’t need any chance. It’s a free world you can think about me whatever you’d like. Someone’s perspective of me doesn’t mean it’s who I am, it’s who I’m projected to be by others
@@benjaminmellingen5340 but yeah I’m crazy... the programming I’m talking about is the fact you think it’s weird seeing a large gathering of people. Just a year ago we would have never taken a second thought about the portion of people who are in an area at once. Who knows how long we’ll look at large gatherings as a negative, scary and weird thing, hopefully not much longer. I get it there’s a global pandemic going on everywhere in the world except for China but also large gatherings are pretty normal in China.
just seeing the people having a good time and singing just makes my heart warm ❤. even the people who dont know the song are clapping which is so wholesome, a crowd of people singing is just so cool and great
When? Sure, there have been periods of peace in areas throughout human history, not many, if any, endured forever though. Until humanity learns to control it's irrationalities, we aren't ever going to reach that perfect eutopia of peace and progression. 0.7 on the Kardashev scale, we are a child race, with so much potential.
Im in tears, it’s things like this that make me realize how much I miss humanity. People coming together to celebrate and lean on each other, the power of a large group of people who all believe in something, this base level of humanity that reminds us we’re not alone. I miss other people, and hugs, and singing like this with hundreds of other people.
same. we need to come together like this nowadays, and just realize that we are all human no matter who we love and what color you are. and that we are all going to get through this together.
Music.. Genuinely one of the most powerful things in the world.. Almost any song has the power to transport you instantly to a different stage of your life.
“Purple Tunnel of Doom was the name ascribed to the I-395 Third Street tunnel in downtown Washington, D.C., where thousands of holders of purple tickets lined up to witness the first inauguration of Barack Obama on January 20, 2009. Ticket colors corresponded to assigned viewing areas.” Wikipedia
That tunnel seems pretty white to me, but I guess it's another way to say brown person. All the brown people who's "not" brown are purple in cartoons anyway. Typical Americanaculture
@@SugarSkullSmile harmonization is kinda the opposite... you would hear a lot of different voices different tones and different pitch... soprano, alto, tenor, etc... but i guess its hard to do that in a crowd this big
This gives me nostalgia. In High school, I used to be in marching band, and one time at a band festival there was a bad storm that had rolled in half way through the day during the field shows. Everyone had to go below the stadium seats under the concrete structure, so there were probably 1,000 kids with some adults scattered around, all stuck together during a bad storm. Eventually, we all just started singing songs we all knew, and this video pretty much sums up wat it looked like. Easily my favorite childhood memory.
We did the exact same thing when I was in highschool 😂 I play saxophone and for some reason our saxophone section decided it was a good time to sing a bunch of songs that we had played on the bus while going to this competition. Then put low brass heard us and joined in and then some other random kids from 8 other bands joined in and then the rest of their bands had joined In and it was all just a lot of fun. It was about the same for us about 100-150 kids per band and parents included. The money i would pay to go back to those days. I just realized I’m really being a saxophone player by over explaining everything 🤣
in april 2018, my grandma's third husband passed and she was heartbroken. on december 22nd, 2023 she got remarried at age 60. i played this song on my guitar while my cousin sang it for them. they loved it so much
*I find it amazing that one may not be gifted with pleasant vocal cords, but when singing in sync with a large group it sounds like a perfect harmony - also, where is this and what are they doing?*
@@azra-ik4op Incredible that a nation who voted in Obama and gave everyone hope could then also vote in a total clown like Trump and have millions not even recognise what a total arsewipe the bloke is. This Trump actually congratulated Putin on his invasion of Ukraine......Can you imagine how fcuked up this world would be today if that clown was still President of the USA? 🙄
Ultimately this is a characterisation of randomness. Everyone tries to hit a certain node with random deviation from it. The flaws cancel out and what stays is the correct intonation.
Yeah same as what Rollmops explained. Even if we say only 50% of them are singing in tune, the other 50% are all out of tune but hitting different random other notes, so the melody prevails as it has the highest number of people singing those specific notes
My chorus teacher in 4th grade had us sing the song before spring break and there was a part where she was just like "now your turn!😀" and pointed at the crowd/parents..nobody sang anything besides some 3 to 5 parents 💀
I forgot for a second that there was a time when people didn’t have to wear a mask so when I first saw this video I was wondering where everyone’s mask was
Imagine: Somebody has crowd anxiety, and the way they calm themselves down is by singing this song, and all of a sudden everybody in the tunnel is supporting them, and nobody even knows it.
It all depends on where you live. Hopefully you live around safe and sane people that listen to health professionals and vaccine rates are above 70% for your area, otherwise good luck! I've heard New Zealand looks great at all times of the year?
@@Greenteabook true. Here in Massachusetts USA we actually listed to the masking for the most part, I'd say 95% of people did... And now we are almost 100% open. and doing fine. the states that didn't take this seriously, in other words the Trump states.. are still messed up. The numbers are clear. No question about it. Go ahead and fight it if you want but the facts are clear. The states that realized this was serious from the start... When Trump was saying this is a joke, we are the ones who are returning to life as usual now. The rest of you are still in shut down mode. That's literally 100% true. You might want to say it's not true, but if you do, it just makes you look more stupid.
Imagine for a moment every single person in the world coming together in this way for 1 day ... the power we all hold is immeasurable when we stand together ❤
I would love for a single day. I bet if we did a single day long enough. We would end up with a whole year just like this. God said thou shall not hate.
I'm pretty sure people spread their various cruds....it may not have been covid but there was some funk spread. I hope to never find myself that close to strangers in a crowd ever again.
We really NEED this kind of togetherness back in our lives, our hearts, and our souls! WE ARE ONE PEOPLE AND WE ALL NEED EACH OTHER! Peace and Love to ALL!
