Learn about the history of San Diego’s Chicano Park with Evita Robinson, storyteller and founder of the Nomadness Travel Tribe.
In this episode, Robinson meets with Lucas Cruz, chair of the Chicano Park Steering Committee. Cruz shares the importance of allowing Chicano voices to tell their stories through the art at Chicano Park and Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.
He explains how residents were displaced when the freeways and bridges were constructed over what is now Chicano Park. The resilience of these communities is palpable as he shares their continued struggles with gentrification.
Next they visit Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center. Opened in 2022, it celebrates local artists, Chicano Indigenous culture, and provides local historical context about the park, which was founded in 1970.
Follow along as Robinson continues her journey through Southern California.

Okay, so I learned growing up that Chicano/a was a word created by Mexican Americans (I believe 60s/70s). Chicano/a meant it was a word that identified Mexicans (Mexican Americans) that were born in the United States with Mexican ancestry. Because! They didn’t feel like they were seen as Americans here in the U.S. but not seen as Mexicans in Mexico. So the word Chicano/a was created to give the Mexicans a word to identify that they love their Mexican heritage but are born in the U.S. which they love, as well.
