I hope this helps! It takes a little time and effort, but it really is worth getting a good handle on key signatures and circle of fifths to help you understand your music more deeply. The next video will be about relative minors and scales! Just in time for Halloween!

Thanks so much for this, Anne. As a child, I played violin and all I'd have to do was look at the key signature and I'd already know how to play the piece! Ah, the innocence and precociousness of childhood! Not so for the harp as an adult, though; it's a whole new learning curve for me!

Thank you I have a busking harp with levers new to music and I have been trying to understand what it means to tune a harp to a particular scale as my harp is in G but didn't sound right I changed the f natural to a f sharp after watching your video and the difference was amazing. I am very grateful for lots of reasons not least that the better it sounds the more likely I am to practice.

Thank you Anne for dymystifying Key signatures and their corresponding lever settings! Wonderfully helpful video for new harpists! Would you suggest to tune to E flat major for the most versatility? Ive been tuning to 444hz for therapeutic harp, but would this perhaps not work for the standard tuning of 440hz and key signatures as the pitch is higher? Grateful for your insight! 🙏🙏🙏

Anne - This is magnificent. I've never heard it explained so simply and clearly. I regularly recommend your beginner book to other teachers. "Big Adventures for Small Harps" Which book of yours would be "one step up" from that book? Thank you for all you do to expand harp & music education.

Wow that was really helpful, you're such a great teacher Anne! My harp is in the key Eb, I had it in C but the teacher I went to told me Eb is better. For tuning I use the app Christy-Lyn has recommended in a video before (the app is called pano tuner).
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic 4 года назад
I had my harp tuned in C Major for a whole year before I even realized that tuning in Eb was a thing! Now I keep my Dusty 36 in Eb, but my Christina therapy harp remains in C. Glad the video was helpful!

@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I think it's a bit of a cultural thing too, in germany/europe Eb seems to be the norm.

The way I learned flats was to look at the last flat and count down 4. So Ab down 4 would be E major.
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic 2 года назад
Yes, that would work!
@andrewwilliams9580
@andrewwilliams9580 Год назад
I learned this but backwards years ago. For Sharps, I picture top G and tell myself there's one sharp, then down 5 semitones again to D and tell myself there's two sharps. Down five semitones to A and tell myself there's 3. Conversely, for flats, I picture bottom F and tell myself there's one flat. Then I count up five semitones to B-flat and tell myself there's two flats. Then up five semitones again to E-flat and tell myself there's 3 flats. I use this pattern all the way to seven flats and sharps.
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic Год назад
There are so many patterns! Yours is a new twist for me...it works!
@andrewwilliams9580
@andrewwilliams9580 Год назад
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic your pattern was a new twist for me too. For a harpist, counting in just naturals makes sense to you. For me, as a pianist with no harp experience, counting in semitones works too. Harp interests me as it looks like the inside of a grand piano. The flipping of levers would've confused me an awful lot had I not studied piano before. Also, my pattern doesn't involve counting the note you are already on, whereas yours does.
@yecyecii6820
@yecyecii6820 3 года назад
I play the piano. Im currently learning to play guitar but ive found harp more easier to learn because the notes are not hidden just as the piano pattern.
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic 3 года назад
I agree, the patterns are so easy to see on the harp.
@SbjsksmNx
@SbjsksmNx Год назад
So how do you play accidentals within a piece when you of course can't be tuning mid-song?
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic Год назад
Each string has 2 possible pitches, the one it’s tuned to and a half step higher when the lever is engaged. So the blue string can be F or F sharp.
@johnnynunley9488
@johnnynunley9488 Год назад
My little harp has no levers! Do I have to just make the sharps/flats with the tuning tool?
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic Год назад
Personally, what I would do is take a deep dive into learning about modes. Then you can have different moods and colours without levers! You could take a peek at my Emoji Modes workbook.
