This is a video that was needed, a lot of people throw away perfectly good coaster-brake rims, just because they're intimidated by the thought of taking one apart, these are quality rims with a very reliable built-in brake that NEVER wears-out, why wouldn't you do everything possible to make it work?, PEOPLE!!, I'm also a firm believer in redundancy when it comes to bike-brakes, always use some type of clamp-brake on at least one wheel when running a coaster-brake, that way if your chain breaks, or you just need some extra stopping power, you'll have it, great video, and thanks for sharing.
A tip I learned from my local pro bicycle shop, you can do away with the (caged bearings) and just install loose ball bearings in its place. What this does is increase the amount of ball bearings in the hub so you have more complete ball bearing to cone surface coverage. Just buy loose ball bearings from your local shop, they are cheap and it is better.
I had to replace the whole bearings on my phatmoto after 2 months riding because they were making noise and my jackshaft bearings also had to be replaced.
@@richardfelmlee5193 It appears that bicycles from China come with not enough grease or inferior grease in the hubs and bearings. So the bearings tend to fail early.

Thanks for making a video on this subject. I've made this mistake a couple times. It's great that someone has made a video on this because this is the stuff new builders need to be made aware of. I've found that using a freewheel hub instead of the coaster brake solves a lot of issues, and eliminates the complexity of the sprocket installation. Thanks for the awesome videos. Keep them up.
Great video, Tony! Clever idea with the vice-grips in the lap to keep one side stationary while you fiddle with the other side. For the cone-nut/jam nut adjustment, I’ll grab the shaved wrench and a few spokes with one hand to maintain that position of the cone nut and work the jam nut with the top wrench and my free hand. This will keep the cone nut from walking on ya while you’re snugging down the jam nut. They call that bearing crown a “race”.
Hey, the video you did on the front disc brakes, you don't center up the rotor in the brake caliper. They are no self centering like on a car, you actually need the inside pad, the one closest to the spokes to nearly touch the rotor, if not every time you use the brake, you'll be bending the rotor.

the wrench idea is a cool idea . but you know they sell cone wrenches . not sure if you knew or not but yeah they even have a pretty cool bicycle tool kit with everything you would ever need to fix your bike on amazon fairly cheap . i think like for between 45 and 60 dollars .
For sure! I’ll definitely get those tools for future projects. The reason I’m keeping with regular tools at the moment is because this is geared towards beginners with basic tools. Appreciate you diy!
@@tonytaylor5087 for sure i get it . alot not al but alot of the kids now days dont even know how to change handle bars dont ask me how i know but its true lol . so its good info for sure . as for the tools i ran across them searching for cone wrenches myself and ran across a whole kit of basically every tool you could want in a small kit . even had a free wheel wrench . you know the one with the bike chain that wraps around the sprocket to lock it in place . for the price i cant remember how much it was but it was under 100 dollars between 40 and 60 dollars . just search bicycle tool kits they have loads of them to choose from . good luck and ride safe buddy .
The rim that works best for motorized bicycle is mag or if you want a spoke wheel will cost around $300 . Sealed cartrage is the best bearing hub but you will have to have hand brakes .
Mags break your crazy to recommend them. When one snaps on you you’ll know what your saying to people. You can buy a 12 gauge rim for 100 steel rim on Amazon or 150 on Walmart online. Gemini and ghetto bike don’t even cost that!!Straight trash just to say something.
I am fast becoming a motorized bicycle enthusias.. you have been a big help building mine. I have a cnc 1.5 rear hub coming in tomorrow but heard it gonna be hard to fit on a mountain bike rim. So I got the 1inch adapter pad as well. Could you give me some pointers?
Should the wheel spin freely on the axle? I know that might be a foolish question but I’m new at this. I have tried to adjust mine, I have coaster breaks and I can’t keep the axle tight on the wheel. Any help you can give would be a great help. Thanks!

I used red loctite on my 3060 sprocket on my mag wheels one of my mag wheels got destroyed because bolts back out not taking chance on the blue loctite using red I don't ever intend to take it off the mag wheels are awesome if your prelocktite the bolts if not I will destroy your bolt holes and your bolts from wobbling
Serious question on rear hubs. Mine has been heating up extensively during high speeds, to where I can't touch it more than 1 sec. What do you think causes that? I have no grinding etc. And almost no play in the axle and bearings. I think it might be wrong grease and or bearings aren't meant for speeds greater than 15mph. I have automotive bearing grease I can use, but is their after market solution or fix for this? Is this common?

Use a propane torch to warm up the cylinder for easy start in the winter. Just keep the flame moving evenly around the fins and stay away from the gaskets.
I've gotten my friends Laughing because I carry spare parts enough tools I could almost brake down and rebuild the whole bike and motor. Its a bad feeling to break down and not able to get home. I'm in bfe 12mile trip just to closes gas station
How would i go about changing my rear wheel to a heavy duty wheel with 12g spokes and still maintain my 7speed freewheel hub on my bike and use the cnc hub adapter instead of a rag joint?
Every heavyduty wheel replacement with 12g spokes i find has a coaster brake style hub and i would rather maintain the caliper style brakes when i install my motor kit

First of all you don't know what you're doing you're putting people's life in danger because you should never use a coaster rim on a motorized bike anybody and everybody knows that that knows anything about a motorized bike
