I’ve just bought this and the concepts have massively changed the game for me - yes I’m not taking backs and subbing, but I’m getting subbed nowhere near as much as im thinking about the right things. Thanks Jordan

I’m 9 months in and I’m getting my ass kicked all the time. I’ve just decided that I’m going to stick with it and I stopped caring about how I feel or look and I just want to improve. This video is so YUGE, it’s everything I need to focus on.
@paprika5487
@paprika5487 2 года назад
@@senecaturnpike9179 Exactly, that's the right attitude to have. I used to be super competitive in sports, but I've really dialed back. I'm doing BJJ to learn self-defense, stay in shape, and socialize with people. Almost quit in the first month because I was getting wrecked all the time, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Each day I'm just going through the motions and focusing on the basics when I roll.
@senecaturnpike9179
@senecaturnpike9179 2 года назад
@@paprika5487 my cousin is one of the best bjj players on earth, and so I put way too much pressure on myself. I got my ass whooped about 100x and decided, ok no one expects anything from me, now I can just try to figure this out like everyone else lol. Sometimes when our worst fears happen, (at least for me) I thought, ok…. The world didn’t end, it wasn’t that bad. Then I was able to just focus on learning. I’m still getting beat up and I can’t see when that’s going to end and I’ve made peace with it. I’m 37 years old, and I leave a better man every time.

For being a new white belt Glen (sp?) is doing pretty good! No crazy spazzing or death grip+twist type of stuff. He's making the mistakes you'd expect to see but he has control and isn't panicking. Actually nice to see. I don't even know how many times I've had a white belt panic and grab two of my fingers and twist them to "just breaking your grips bro". Thanks for the video!

You gave some advice around the two minute 30 second mark, and I think it’s really important advice that is, unfortunately, ignored or unknown by so many people in the jiujitsu community. Don’t start on your knees. I don’t know how it came to be a thing in jiujitsu, but it’s so silly. Maybe it’s because BJJ practitioners are often unfamiliar with takedowns and operate under the incorrect belief that there’s no way to safely practice takedowns. As always, excellent instruction and content. Thanks for taking the time.

I love that you point out how the grips are so essential to the battle and highlight them in your exchanges. I'm just wondering how you go about teaching which grips are advisable and which are not? I notice that when they get good grips often you just adapt and move into the "counter move" (which is great for us to learn from!) and when they have bad grips you pass freely. So from the white belt perspective (in the roll), All of their grips would really just feel bad? Hopefully that makes sense.
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu 2 года назад
The grips you take are dependent on the technique you want to pull off and vice versa. Think about grips needed for a specific pass. Those are grips you should take to achieve that pass. A lot of times people just grab randomly and think about the technique after. It's a tough question to answer because everything is so situational.

surely the young man was shown how to do better, by the coach, I am also still a beginner and I believe by making mistakes you learn and a fight is won not only in theory but through practice - very good video and the coach was very respectful of the beginner. Class - Greats from Germany

As someone who is about to start BJJ this week, a big thank you to Glen for making this video. Takes guts to get out there and roll and it's really helpful for us new guys to watch this so we know what to expect.
