Thanks for this video. I never knew that German and French had better language resources. I can read and write French but I never thought about using it to learn other languages. It was a real eye-opener. Thanks for the video. I look forward to your next videos

French and German are, simplistically, the parent languages of English. The German tribes the Angles and the Saxons, who invaded England about 1200 year ago, contributed the most to the AngloSaxon or old English language. Before that Celtic was the language of Britain. By the invasion of Norman William the Conqueror, a similar phenomenon occurred twice, now giving our modern English a mother, basically French, as I exists today. I like your files And have subscribed. I just discovered your RU-vid file on BDNF as a recovering stroke patient. I am thus trying to nurture the Neurogenesis process in myself. I am also a linguist. I have attended classroom courses, mostly high school and college, in French, German, Latin, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and Hebrew. I can read Portuguese without difficulty, but do not yet speak Portuguese. I am a retired high school French teacher. I am very excited to have discovered your RU-vid site and wish you the best!!!

German is not the “parent language” of English, and neither is French. I wish this bad linguistics would die.

I am currently learning both along with Italian and Modern Greek, as well as Latin. I am on my way to polyglottery and polyliteracy, no matter that it may take me about 3-5 years to become fluent in these languages and then move on to possibly three or four more! I am in no hurry.

I was raised a monolingual anglophone and now I have a fairly high level of fluency in Spanish. I’m curious about your insights on the learning materials available for that

Why not Latin and Greek first? Classical education seems to prioritise these languages because of the learning curve it gives its students. It also improves your English.
@bhutchin1996

Assimil's courses on *spoken* Latin and Attic Greek are not available in English. If you know French, you can follow both of these courses, pas de problème. And the best edition of Athenaze is in Italian; in another video he says that edition is much like Lingua Latina. Another reason is that an ancient language is much more approachable once you've learned one of its descendant languages. He recommends learning modern Greek before classical Greek.

Quelle bonne vidéo ! How would you recommend reading a text? I am a high school Latin III student and I am also currently learning French using Assimil's Using French course as I worked through the first one. I would like to discover la littérature française so if you have a preferred method of reading, would you mind at all to share it?

Could you please post links to lists of some of the best language learning resources (books, courses, etc) in German and French? I learned some Koine Greek and Biblical Hebrew and now I want to read fluently as well as read classical Homeric Greek, so I'm following your advice to learn modern Greer and modern Hebrew. I'm fairly proficient in French and German too.

@trollfacegaming9063

Late to the comment but since Greek and Latin are your priorities you should learn Greek and Latin first. The video assumes that your goal is to be a polyglot learning many languages, not just Greek and Latin.

French. Assimil has good courses with audio for both languages, and they're mostly available with French as the language of instruction.

This is where both Teach Yourself and Colloquial come in handy. I think Hippocrene also has a course on Gulf Arabic; while I'm not 100% sure of that, I know they have a course on Iraqi Arabic.

I was taught Sanskrit along with my mother tongue while growing up as a child and school student. And in the school, add English and my country's official language aka Hindi. By the end of school (10th), I had huge advantage over other pupil because of years of proficiency in Sanskrit. That skill helped me to learn quickly some European languages such as German, Russian etc. Later, I went on to learn a few Asian languages too.

French is definitely a great first language to learn. There are a great wealth of beautiful literature, not to mention the searing existential philosophy, which is something that the German language shares with.

You can. Knowing both Spanish and Portuguese and having learned some Italian, in many ways Italian vocabulary is closer to Portuguese. Ultimately, it really depends on why you're learning the language.

Russian has plethora of books dedicated to language learning. French and German lack decent books when it comes to languages of former USSR . If you are interested especially in eastern European & Asian languages, then better learn Russian too.
