Thanks for opening up! I painted projects during times of depression. Put the will to survive and hope into them. And during other hard times I learned that miniature painting really is way for me to relax on a very deep level. Happy painting!

Painting to me is creating a substitute of your inner self as seen through someone else's eyes. What reflects thru one's eyes is not always what the artist feels he/she predicts and as for emotions and art , who is to say what our minds go through as we contrast enlightenment and disorder all in a spatial nano-second in time.

As a disabled painter who’s had a feck tonne of loss the past few years this was a surprisingly comforting video. I’m not able to do all the technical stuff I would like to be able to do I try to bring in texture and feelings to what I am able to do. It also expressed something I’ve always felt about miniature painting. Some of my favourite artists, pieces are not really the ones that are technically advanced… they are they ones that make me feel something, the pieces that evoke something that I can relate to or that resonate with ‘the human condition’.

@@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART you are welcome! And thank you for all of that. I do appreciate it. Just in case, I don’t always word something in the right way so I’ve noticed lately that some have been taking my comments/questions as insults! Which is almost never my intent! Either way, take your time! Honestly, most of the time RU-vid doesn’t even send me notifications on most of the replies I get! And when I first started to notice that was when I started watching videos I’ve already watched and when I was wondering if I asked something, I looked for it and found a bunch of replies that I never got notifications for! Ether way, have a good day!!!

It's really a shame I can only like this once. I feel like all of my favorite pieces have a bit of my heart in them. You asked about pieces we've done that we are connected too A few come to mind. My "How to train your dragon" piece occured after not being able to paint for months due to studying for a test for my job. all of the creative juices were bent up. My "Grandma's" piece comes from a desire to remeber those times I would come home from school to my grandparent's house and she would make chicken and dumplings. perhaps my most emotional connected piece would be the third part of the triptych "Vahalla" the bust of the sheild maiden being sent to Valhalla. It was the last piece I showed my Grandfather before he passed and the scroll on her side is actually part of the program from his funeral. Thank you for this wonderfully insightful video.

Roman, I've admired your work for years now. Your emotions have always shown through. Thank you for your honest and open reflections in this video. You touch on very real aspects of art and life that are rarely discussed but always present. Each of us have our own highs and lows in life and unfortunately the longer we live the more residual heartaches affect us and linger deep within. Art is an excellent way to channel those emotions. It's good to see that others face the same challenges - especially those we respect in areas of life that interest us. Your work and thoughts are an inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

I painted an entire army, over 400 hours of work, during the pandemic while working full time with small children at home. The paint session before bed was all I lived for, and even when every day seemed the same with no end in sight I watched this army grow and grow and knew that I could come out the other side at some point. My kids are now school age, I have moved on to other projects and never want to bring the army out of the box for a game because it’s too painful to see the emotions entailed in each model. Thank you for sharing this video. Happy Painting.

Thank you very much for making this, Roman! Now I can understand way better, what you mean by „happy painting“. Seeing the drowning Bust in slow turning 3d was intense. It conveys the emotions so much better than a still picture. And seeing and knowing the size and weight of the plinth makes it so so so much more intense. It makes me feel stuff. Great Piece. Great work in capturing the numbing feel of depression. Danke Kevin

Your series is amazing and helpful!! My wife passed away a year and a half ago and my modelling has reflected that. I go through my ups and downs, I find I gravitate more to figures now . The video and editing (what little I did is second) I am not rushed to finish. I spend time painting and building and find myself talking to my wife and dealing with my grief through my figures more than other models, I use the time I have now more to reflect and grieve and create something that I couldn't before, I have embraced my loss and used it to create art, not just churn out models for the glory, I always had a goal to hit 1k subscribers and now that I have it is the enjoyment is more important, ( like it always should have been) Your girl on the large plinth is not disturbing!! It is reflective of life and how sometimes we feel we are being dragged down into the abyss. Thank you for the inspiring videos Andrew

Thank you for sharing, Roman. Your work and videos have inspired me to come back to miniature painting after 15 years. The irony of my old art is that I went from painting soldiers at war... to being a wounded soldier myself. Shortly afterwards I gave up art altogether. The paintings I did finish were very dark but I'm hoping to return and manifest this from a healthier place in life. I will absorb everything I can from here and on Patreon. I look forward to seeing your well-earned continued success.

I must say that I see this video on a very special moment for me. I'm 45 y.o. and had a lot of problems in my life, but at last I know why. I was a few weeks ago diagnosed with ADHD, which may sound funny for old guy like Me, but is not. And I realised two things: 1. Why I'm not very good in painting - I was doeing it for the last 20+ years, but I had 1-2 years long breaks in painting. So I go to some level and then drop down because of those intermissions. So it's like a rollercoaster of skill. I was blaming myself that I'm not as good as I could be... But now I know it's typical for ADHD. It's my dysfunction, not my laziness. 2. I used my hobby for help when the situation, my mental situation, was very bad or when I was overwhelmed by the life problems. It was My escape to My safe place, My hobby, another dimension. So I understand very well what Roman is saying. And I think it's wise and very helpful for all people who struggle with internal or external problems. Thank You Roman for this part and 2nd part, which I also saw.

Great video. Was super interesting to hear you talk about what the whole happy painting thing means to you in a bit more dept. I had taken the its about enjoying painting and not focussing on being perfect etc etc but I like this interpretation of it more; being honest with your emotions and letting them be a part of your work. I have done a diorama that was super personal for me about spicy-emotional health or mental health and was heard on the things that came up but also putting it out in the world as once you put your work out there people can and will completely miss the point for you and interpret it in their way. That is the nature of art but as it was a vulnerable piece it made it even more vulnerable when people where making comments that showed they where looking at something different than me. Anyways thanks for sharing. I think as a creative person I find it almost impossible to not put a part of myself into any miniature art works I make for myself. Only just stumbled across these videos and really enjoying the series.

Because back in the day when I still had ups and downs my drawings would be considered kinda creepy and dark. But after a long time of no longer seeing any highs people would only see the beauty in the pain I painted!!! Some things are just ironic I guess

Was that MS_Paints I saw in two of your classes photos? I love his channel so much and I am glad to see the two of you connected in some way.

I can say I really enjoy the content by @MS_paints that I have seen so far, but no, we've never met thus far.

I really appreciated this video Roman, thank you. Your work has been an inspiration to me for some time now and over the last year I've started creating small frame dioramas but this year I want to work on what you've mentioned in this video, working with emotions. I've felt for too long my art has just been painting minis for painting sake, not creating art and I realised the missing component was me. Thank you!

14:07- I’m happy that worked for you. And I’ve heard from many different people that it helped with their (what I like to call their short term) depression!!! But all the time I’ve tried it has not been in any way useful! Most of the time they just wanted to put me on drugs! And the other times they really didn’t GAS! I was just another pay day for them! Not to mention since most of my depression for over 20 years was based in the real world and not in my head the only thing they could do or the meds could do is cover up the problems! It was like a band-Aid for a gun shot! Yeah, it might close the hole but the bullet was still in there so it was still poisoning me from the inside!!!

6:22- Yeah…….. I used to hear that one a lot also. “How can you appreciate the light if you don’t know what darkness is like?” But when all you know is cover in darkness, what is light?!? Yeah, depression sucks….. And the longer you suffer from it the less you ability you have to fight out of it. I know better than most what a lifetime of depression, pain and failure feels like and what it does to you and your soul. Like I said, depression sucks……. But sometimes….. life sucks also!

9:28- yeah, those suck also. More so depending on how long it was and also if there were kids involved! I’ve had those disappointments throughout life also. But the last one (and of course the last time I will ever allow someone that close to me again) was sparked because I finally lost control over a pretty much lifelong addiction to PK for chronic pain I was blessed with from birth!!! Yup, I lost control, fell fast and even though I was doing my best to keep it together my now ex wife didn’t feel like dealing with it at all! So she left me and took my daughter also! That is when I found a game called SWL and my first time I have ever seen miniature games! I guess I traded one addiction for another but painting was the only thing that kept me just barely above the surface of the water! Without it I had nothing. Without it I was drowning every day! But at no point did I ever feel better. At no point did anything get better! I was alone! But I was alone because of others!!!

Currently still painting "The Bather" and it feels very personal to me, so I am struggling to finish it as I want it to be just right...

9:33- I understand why you would say that. But that’s not what I see! I see desperation! I see the survival of the fittest but even the strongest in the worst situations will still starve. Being trapped in the same place that is also poisoning you.

The audio levels are a little low on this one. Turned my speakers all the way up to compensate, but then the adds are very loud, which is ideal.

Roman, one small thing. Your videos are so quiet I have to hold my phone up to my ear to hear them. Could you possibly master the volume a little bit higher?

I’m sorry if all my other comments sound more like I’m picking a fight or that I’m trying to disprove your experiences and your victories! I’m not. I’m just sharing mine. Because I know if people actually had to admit not all stories end with a happy ending then they would also have to face that there is a chance things won’t get better!!! And yeah, at first that is pretty scary!!!
