wow! i just have to say, i have been binging your videos for a week, and these are amazing. i was told by so many people, trainers, websites, that my dog would need a specialist or animal behaviorist and that her behaviors were too extreme, and after watching your videos, i’ve reduced my dogs leash reactivity, separation anxiety, barking, and so much more so fast, it’s really unbelievable. you are awesome, thank you so much for doing all this

Even if your dog doesn't have separation anxiety, it's good to give them something to work on when you're not there. This I think is just part of owning a dog. My German Shepherd is about 1 year old, and I do this for her not because she has anxiety but just BECAUSE. And I think a lot of dog owners should be able to figure out to do this stuff for thier dog simply by THINKING about it and by having a little empathy for the dog. Owners that don't even think about this, are probably just not putting themselves in their dog's point of view enough. Cuz like, duh, of course the dog might be bored left in the house for hours. But it's incredible to me how many dog owners don't think about that.

Gone 45 minutes and still working on it. Came to door when I got home but no barking honestly can't remember a time when this happened and his 5 years old. Will freeze his food in bones. Great subject for a video Joel! I’m glad you mentioned the idea of people not even thinking about the fact that their dog needs exercise. I feel like it’s only fair to do EVERYTHING we can to set them up for success before putting them in the crate. I just wanna mention that after filling the Kong with wet food or whatever you decide, take a stick or the end of a wooden spoon or something small enough to fit through the small hole at the top to make sure there’s all of these things a tunnel for airflow once the food is frozen so that a dog licking can’t get their tongue stuck in it. It prevents suction.

I call them #love notes. I've been leaving treats all around the house when I leave for years, so they not only get to hunt, but, have something other than me to fixate on. You know how good you feel when you accidentally find a sweet note from your significant other, and your dopamine levels burst a little, you're like, awwwww, they love me even though they aren't right here beside me, i think doggies feel the same way. And why not give them the same self esteem while we're away. It's not allllll about us, if we love, it's the idea of letting the other entity to know they can do it when you aren't around. And, the hunting for treats, definitely allows them to use their cognitive skills and wears them out. And who doesn't love hide n seek?! Thank you sooooo much for your videos!!!

We have a year and a half old German Shepherd and we do the Frozen Kong when we have to leave, but the problem that we are looking at is that he doesn't do anything with the Kong or the bully sticks. He completely leave the items alone and then just waits by the door. Once we get back home maybe 3 hours later then he starts messing with the Kong and the bully sticks and drinking water.

Great videos, thank you for sharing the information on the difference between throwing a ball in the backyard vs being on a walk. Mm y most recent puppy started out on a bush walk in the mornings, then home for some chew stuff in the crate whilst I went in and out of the house doing garden things and progressing to errands to town. I agree about the crates, however as I've other dogs who are more efficient at chewing theirs, it meant puppy could take him time working away at his own task. We'd do a leash walk in the evening before dinner as well. I'm an advocate that a dog exercising before a meal is like they are earning it, but mostly I think it's routine. Thanks again for your videos and putting the information out there 🤠

Don't get discouraged. You'll find a solution if you're patient and keep refining your understanding and tracking the situation. I'm curious to hear how you react when he screams. You might inadvertently be reinforcing that behavior. Make sure that when this happens you reinforce the calmness when it comes, and not the panic.

@@CamperTeddy I understand your frustration, but I'm confident you just haven't found the right method yet and you can find a way of fixing this issue. It sounds like you have a very specific trigger related to the motorhome. I would just set aside a time to practice this specifically, be more granular, smaller steps, change things up. Maybe you sit him at the door as you walk towards the door and give him a treat. Make him feel comfortable with you walking towards the door somehow. Also, practice leaving him in other spaces and notice the difference and increase the tolerance slowly and daily. Your frustration and anxiety could be sending him the message that there is something to be afraid of. Don't look at him thinking "my dog has a problem", look at him thinking "it's OK, you're going to be OK. We're in this together and we'll find a solution, no matter how long it takes".

I just adopted a GSD suddenly last night (After background checks, try out period, and travel) and all I can say, thank gods for you and Prince. Rogue is a year old bitch from an abandonment case and has already has solid basics (sit, recall, eyes up, fantastic on leash and off leash when she slipped from her old collar). She will be spayed asap. Anyways, I know separation anxiety can make or break a dog owner who lives in an apartment; and prevention is key. In fact, since the moment she got here, it’s been positive, consistent reinforcement, being predictable in routine, and feeding her meals as rewards as she’s currently underweight. I know there’s always something to learn, but I know German Shepards aren’t usually a cozy apartment dog. My goal is to eventually give her a job that uses her brain. She’s very skittish right now, but I’ve been doing decompression and desensitization work with her already. No it’s not too fast, I need to take immediate control of her situation and let her understand I’m safe and I’m in charge. Hardest thing for me too is separation anxiety… thank you for giving advice and training to mitigate this common issue!

The problem with the morning walk before leaving is that he wants more than anything else to come with me. Thats all he wants since I get out of bed. The whining starts when my pants go on. very very difficult to manage. I worked from home for a long time. But real separation anxiety, my dog doesnt care about treats if he notices I'm gone. Sure, I might be able to sneak away, but he'll notice and start barking/howling longing for me. Not even my wife is adequate for him. What do we do for dogs who aren't distracted by chews or food? My puppy will happily chew on anything when I'm around but if I leave she'll howl for over an hour, dig, pant. I've tried leaving clothing, correcting/reinforcement from same and different rooms, radio, locking the good things in her crate, exercise, play in/near crate, food/water only in crate, Kong's, licks, yaks, and nothing has worked. I've tried small increments of time and big increments of time. Tried ignoring her and tried teaching her how I want her to be. She excels in every other area of her training except this and I'm at a loss -- I've yet to have a shower without her having a full meltdown.

@colbystrawder4589 Год назад
Work on separation within the house first. ex. Feed her while you go get a shower. If that’s too much still. Maybe feed her while you cook. Or replace the feeding with a kong if your on a tight schedule. Then eventually start doing to a further room until you are as far (within the house) as you can get. Stay here until some time here is built. And then work on short term outside. Like going to check the mail or something. This may take longer. Maybe try it in the crate first when actually leaving the house for small times. Start that in the house too. By crate training in other rooms away from you. When feeding time comes. Feed them in the kennel. Even if you have to start right beside them. It’s just repetition and taking every small victory you can get.

The rule of thumb for puppies is no more than 1 hour per month of age. But ultimately, they shouldn't be left in a crate for more than 6 hours. Anything more than that is just cruel. If your pup has to be left alone longer than that, please get someone (or hire a dog sitter) to come let the dog out to potty and play for 20-30 min. Then the dog will be ok to be left for the rest of your day as long as it's not more than 6 hours. Even for an adult dog!

Mr. Beckman I have a problem with my dogs whenever I leash walk one of my dog if my other dog saw us walking outside the garage he will starts to whine and bark I'm not sure if that's separation anxiety or excitement but he really wants to walk with us. So, I always bring my 2 dogs on leash walk at the same time to lessen the bark and whining. Hope you make a address on this thank!

I have a client that rescued a 3 yr old dog a month ago. It was in a sanctuary, with lots of dogs, prior to the adoption. He was doing well for a week but then became so bonded with the owner that it now refuses to leave its crate when she is gone (the gate is open) when her adult son and daughter dog sit. If she leaves and nobody is there, he paces until she returns. The son and daughter are completely on board in helping, but the dog will not even go for a walk unless the owner is with them. It is NOT food motivated in the least. I visited their home to observe and I was able to get him outside, but he became so panicked to go home that I had to return. Anyone have suggestions?

I am not sure how to gauge my pup's anxiety. He is 9 weeks old, he is generally fine in his crate at night. We have a soft pen for him during the day in our living room and we've tried the frozen kong, we've tried keeping it accessible and open but as soon as that door closes he attacks the walls, he charges the door. I am nervous about him hurting himself. I am not sure if it is an isolation anxiety or separation since as soon as he knows we aren't in the room is when his attention leaves his chew toys or food and turns into a freak out. He will be come destructive in his pen too, attacking pee and tearing up pee pads and he will even seemingly intentionally pee in his pen on a bed or blankets when he is in there which he doesn't do outside of it. Can't seem to find a tactic that works with him, should I just move the crate between rooms and get rid of the soft pen? I can't take him for walks until he gets his final booster shot, so he stays on my property right now.

How did this go? Was it just a puppy thing or did it continue? I just got a puppy 8 weeks old. Only a few nights in but he freaks out when I walk to the kitchen and I have an open floorplan. Idk if its just a puppy thing and I just need to give him time to settle or if its the start of something. Early but I have not found a treat he's really interested in. Still too weak and small for the big boy chews.

Took him 15 minutes on air vent to be able to drink water. Any suggestions for this severe. He doesn't destroy stuff. Just paces back and forth. He's very chill if I'm around. Regarding dogs that won't touch treats because they associate it with your departure - my dog does that sometimes. I would suggest giving him the treat and allowing him to get started on it while you sit there. Then, after a few minutes, get up and leave *very abruptly and unceremoniously.* The dog will already have the strong smell/taste of the peanut butter or other treat by this time and may be more inclined to return to it when you leave.

You can start teaching him how to stay at a point of reference. Train that throughout the day so he learns how to be away from you while in your home and just keep progressing that going further away and staying longer. You can incorporate going out the gate and back in and treating him. Make it into a fun game and over time it will get better. Think about this. There is a comfort zone where he's ok. You want to find out what the trigger is, where it is, when he starts to feel uncomfortable but is not on full panic mode and work on expanding that window of tolerance. Is your dog starting to get anxious even before you leave the house, like when you pick up your keys? Work on making him ok with that first. Then keep progressing.

@@michelleborchardt199 Hi Michelle and thank you for your suggestions. I live in a motorhome, all year round. Half the time in Spain, the other half mainly Germany, bit in France. First SA specialist was a lady from Switzerland via Zoom. She helped me break down the triggers. Helped! Second SA specialists were two english ladies in Spain. We tried all the "tricks"...stuffed kong, special toy etc etc. For example; 1st day: Gave Teddy kong stuffed with ground beef and wet food, lightly frozen. Took him 3mins till he started screaming. 2nd day: Gave Teddy kong stuffed as before.....He takes it, turns around, drops it, starts screaming! 3rd day: Gave Teddy stuffed kong.....he doesn't take it, starts screaming immediatley. 4th day: I opened the fridge door....Teddy starts screaming knowing I'm getting the kong...... It took me a week of opening the fridge door 20 times a day to get rid of that trigger!!!! The ladies in Spain hissed the white flag, didn't know what to do. 3rd try: Malena DiMartini: 30min complementary zoom call. To book their course you must comply to their terms - ok - NEVER leave you dog alone. Can't do it. Got to shop for groceries once a week!!! I'll try letting Teddy dig into a stuffed marrowbone and then leave half way thru. My dog is the perfect dog for me. He does everthing I want...recall in under 1second, high five, fetches a ball and gives it to me directly in my hand. I can take him anywhere, he behaves perfectly. Doesn't pull, loves people, plays nicely with other dogs.....one perfect pup!!!! If only.........

@@CamperTeddy I think it would be good to add in teaching a command to release the object in exchange for a reward (or the object they were previously possessing, if safe). They learn that when they release the object in response to the command, they get something better as a reward (or get the same thing back anyway). Then it becomes an automatic response to release the object and not fuss too much because they've been programmed that they get a good result by listening. Not saying this will solve taking any object away, but it should improve it a lot.

You need to correct that dog. Unacceptable behavior.
@ParrotVolancy
@ParrotVolancy 3 года назад
@@permitted_277 It's just a puppy, so that will probably work fine, but sometimes correcting can make them guard more, so I think--based on my current understanding--with an older dog it would be preferable to go through the motions of teaching them the command to release something in an easier context. Then when they know what they're supposed to do it will make more sense when you do correct them for not complying, plus you will have conditioned them to be less possessive through showing them through previous repetitions that they get the object back, get something better instead, etc. What do you think?

My personal fav for fixing 'separation anxiety' in a dog. Grab the dog firmly by its dog schnozzle. A schnozzle is like the muzzle. If you mash the words schnout (German for snout) and muzzle together, you get schnozzle. Anyway while applying a firm grip of the schnozzle with one hand, with your other hand make your fingers form a classic "OK" shape, except that you want to use your middle finger instead of your index finger. Apply pressure against the pad of your thumb with your middle finger, and then flip your middle finger with firm force against the end of the dog schnozzle...FLAP!!! right on the end of the wet nose. Now, granted, the dog won't like this and will try to get away. That's the whole point, isn't it? Try to keep a firm grasp of the dog's schnozzle and apply another firm flap to the nose with your other hand/finger. Rinse. Repeat. As long as you can keep a hold of your dog. If your dog doesn't escape by the 2nd or 3rd flap to the nose, then you're not making contact hard enough. Anyway, I have used this method with some success to help the dog get over its separation anxiety.
