www.learnreaso... LearnReason.com is your number one place on the internet to learn Propellerheads software and everything there is to making great music.
This is Part 3 in the Learn How To Mix Tutorials. In this tutorial I show you how I go about leveling out all the tracks. Leveling / Balancing your tracks is the first thing I do in the Mixing Stage of a song. When you take the time to get a static mix you then can listen to the mix and it will tell you what frequencies are battling each other in the mix which will make it much easier to find them, control them and give all of them equal space in the mix.

This is kind of something that I did semi habitually but only in theory, this is a slow but important breakdown of proper mixing, nothing is left to assumption, i like that you go through each instrument and show the process as one long example, sometimes there needs to be in depth examples of this kind of stuff because a lot of content creators here on youtube sift through their own tutorial videos so quick they're not giving fool proof examples, like-- "you the point👉 cool cool anyways thanks for watching like and scribe for more" And I'm left without any new understanding. So while this video progresses almost too slow as you're going through literally every sound, placing it back into a group, hearing it alone, then in the whole song, Honestly that's kind of how deep professional mixing goes a lot of the time, it can be quite a grind, you have to take the time and just sit there and listen and tweak and listen and you can't rush it otherwise it's going to sound rushed. I guess what I'm saying is great tutorial, thanks 😂

Question... Why did you use the compressor on that bass instead of the gain knob to turn it down? Or better yet when SHOULD I be compressing the track instead of using the gain knob and fader?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 7 лет назад
The compressor is not a level control into the channel as the Input Gain is. The compressor is being used to balance out the level of the Bass that is coming into the mixer. Look at it this way....Input then control over the input and then output, so the sound comes into the mixer via Input Gain and then that sound is controlled, manipulated and effected in the that channel , once you have the sound the way you want it then you use the Output Faders to the Stereo Bus to control the level of how much level and panning you want for that channel in the mix.

I listened to the mix and hear separation of the elements to a point, meaning there needs to me more time spent on craving out each element and giving it it's owe space. EQ is your friend and of course Panning. I go over all this relentlessly in the tutorials because that is all mixing is....level adjustments of frequencies Make a list of every element in your song and put them into 5 columns where you think they should be in the mix, then use the EQ to put them there and of course use panning, this is a good visual for you to learn where elements live in the frequency realm. 1: Low 2: Low/Med 3: Mid 4: Hi Mid 5: HI

@LearnReason
@LearnReason 7 лет назад
lewchootrain Interesting, mixing is an art but like all art it has fundementels, all a mixing engineer has are the knowledge of the fundementels and their ears. I have always found it better to show the fundementels in action, show how a mixer works and let people go for it and post a mix on our Music forum, I then listen and give feedback, they tweak the mix and post it on and on until they get it. That's learning IMHO, it's very heard to test art.
@fennsby

First of all thank you for all the knowledge! Ok, this question is going to reveal that I am indeed a novice. After you've layed down all your tracks in what order do you go about getting the mix ready to exported? Do you level everything first,then set up your gain structure, mix, eq, master? I just want to know if there is something set in stone on how to put together a whole song sound wise. Thanks
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 10 лет назад
There many ways to go about a Mix but if there is one true thing you should do first it is to Level/Gain Stage your tracks. After that there are some logical ways to do things. I do it this way.... Level, EQ/Comp as needed, Pan, Effects and then final Level/Automation. I am going over all this in these videos.
@mounirbelaouchi

Thank you for all your tips. I have a question and I would like your advice, I have a drum track which has repercussions on the peaks of my final song (I'm talking about the kick and snare) and it considerably reduces the volume of my final piece exported (at least that's what I see if I'm not mistaken). when I compress, I lose the punch of my drums and that has an impact on my entire song. I know you have probably dealt with this type of situation. what do you recommend ?
@LearnReason

@deanc2000

Why not add more gain from the rack?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 9 лет назад
deanc2000 The Mixer has an input gain section to do this and the reason to have control of the input gain to the mixer IE...Mixer input to the mixer channel. Controlling the gain from the rack is for controlling the gain of a instrument not the mixer. There are some times when the gain at the rack can over power the mixer input thus you will have to lower it to be able to control the mixer input gain
@deanc2000
@deanc2000 7 лет назад
Why did you compress the synth bass vs just turning down the gain, if it was too loud?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 7 лет назад
Because it would not accomplish the same thing. The synth bass signal was to dynamic, I explain this in the tutorial.
@keepitlo00
@keepitlo00 7 лет назад
Compression lets you bring down and control the volume without taking away from the actual energy or presence of the sound. The gain knob would have just made it jumpier at a lower level which would have made it worse.

Alright this must be the third time I'm watching this (awesome) video, but I still don't get a few things: 1. Why exactly do you use a limiter on the bass at 5:30 instead of leveling it with the gain knob? 2. If you use gain staging to get all tracks equally loud, when and how do you set the volumes in relationship to each other? Like, let's say I have a bass and a guitar both at -10db, but I want the guitar to be generally quiter than the bass. Can I just move down the guitar's channel fader for that?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 10 лет назад
The Limiter is used to level out the dynamic range of the Bass, have you watch the Mixer Series yet if not you should watch that first before the Mix Series. I am still going through the tracks and EQing, final leveling/automation will come later.

When I do this my hats are way too loud, and my kick and bass are almost non-existent even though everything is at the same -10. What am I doing wrong? I am making techno and currently working on Dark Techno track which requires a lot of compression on kick and bass to make them sound right, maybe that is a problem? I tried removing compressors from kick and bass and they become louder but the sound is not even close to what I want. How do you work your way around this? I also tried bumping them up to 0 instead of -10 and they become loud enough to compete with the other tracks but then my master spectrum analizer shows low end at least 20db louder then the rest of the track, thats wasting space right? So what do I do? I tried but couldn't figure it out myself. Sorry for big comment, and thanks!

Not sure why you are having a problem? If you simply do a static mix like I show all your tracks should be equal to your ears and you should be able to hear all your tracks, it easy as that. Hi! I love your series and I was hoping you could help me with this track! I'm stumped. I've been producing for a little over a year now and I can't seem to fix this issue. The shifted clap in my track peaks at an extremely undesirable level and when I turn it down to a more appropriate volume (leveling-wise) it's almost inaudible. I thought I'd been mixing at too much volume but I turned the mix channels down to around -30db with the same results post-master. The sample does have a bit of reverb and transient shaping applied, and I'm beginning to think one of the two are the culprits (especially considering the reverb is at such a low frequency range ('bout 50-60hz)). I did have quite a few compressors routed up, but I've removed all but two aside from the drum bus compressor itself. I don't have much high end at all so I'm sure that can't be the problem. Also I've made note that it "peaks" at the undesired volume but the green level gauge does not. For instance, my kick drum hits at about -12db and the same indicator for where the clap hits is at that same level, with the peak indicator much higher. Very confused at this point. I've just started using Reason 6.5 in the last month or so. Any suggestions?? Here is the track in question (might sound fine, but post master is where I'm having issues); soundcloud.com/ninelines/uncover/s-dr5tI Thanks a ton in advance!

I listened to it and over all your gain structure is not right and thus when you start to mix it will throw everything off. I would turn off everything, EQ/Comp,Effects and then set all faders to default. Then use the Input Gain to level out your mix. Then go through each track and tweak the EQ/Comp to get better separation and from there bring in your effects like I show in this series.

Sends are great for Reverb they allow you to have one Reverb that all tracks can use.1. Level: This is part of Gain Staging and is your Stagnant Mix.2. Listen: Get a feel for the song as a whole.3. Individualize: Give each element its own Space/Presence in the mix.4. Placement: Panning/Leveling,Automation and Effects.5. Reboot: Take a Day off/Hours off to get away from the mix, this reboots your mind.6. Tweak: Listen, fine tune, add, take way, adjust, finalize.7. Ready to Master.

Then make a Audio track and choose the DR. as your input and press record. Now you can cut up the .wav all you want. I hope this helps you out.

Static mix and gain staging is same thing?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 4 года назад
Gain Staging starts from the time you start to record-setting the preamp levels of your microphone and all the way through the Mixing & Mastering process. Static Mix is the start of the mixing process. Think of Gain Staging as adjusting levels of input/output... Over all Gain Structure of a song.

Can you explain me please, why you have decreased level of master out ? i can't undertand because of my bad english(
@LearnReason

I adjust the master out point to the level I want to mix at and leave Headroom for mastering. to adjust my monitoring level i adjust the Control Room volume.

hey, thanks for your awesome Videos. but can you tell me why you choose to have the tracks around -10 db and the sum at +6? why exactly this numbers, what do they mean? thx in advance!
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 9 лет назад
+kabelfritz Do not think to deeply into this because it is very simple. I say you can choose any number -10, -11, -12... Think of it this way. Something recorded really low might need a higher level Something recorded really hi might need a lower level The main thing is to pick a number and stick with it in the mix for the sake of gain structure. I say way I choose use +6 in the tutorial, you want to leave head room for mastering.

How do you bounce a wav file of the mix to a separate channel?
@LearnReason
@LearnReason 9 лет назад
Mason Lucas You don't have to but you can. The easy way is to buss all the tracks to a separate Stereo Track like I show in part 16 of this series. The other way is to goto File/Bounce Mixer Channels and select Bounce Tracks To New Tracks In Song.

LearnReason Are you able to bump the overall volume of your mix by bouncing this way also? I have been exporting all my tracks into one wav file and it comes out less loud than other commercial music I have. I tried compressing but it is already pegging and I have no room left without my master fader peaking out. Any advise.

I recently recorded some vocal tracks and they came out a little bit too low but could I use the maximizer in the leveling of the tracks to bring up the volume of the vocals
@LearnReason

You can goto the audio clip for the vocals and raise the volume there and see if that does it first.

Just record it over and make sure you are cool going in!!! Always better to be correct when going in, that way the mixing will be easier for you!!! Peace!!!

I dont mess around. If it ain't recorded right, I do it again. Best way to ensure quality.

+PhilouGanJa DuB-SelecToR I think it would benefit you to watch the series because than you would understand what I am teaching. In this tutorial (as its topic says) I am showing how to level out the tracks. In part 14 I show how to mix the Bass (in mono). And yes this tutorial series is serious.

+PhilouGanJa DuB-SelecToR. FYI, the bass is usually in stereo in Dubstep and Deep House. If your music requires a mono bass, Matt shows the way,

Don't agree... House Music keeps bass (C) not stereo... Only if u want to achieve a special efx like u use a chorus ,i.e. on a minimoog...
