Jen, great tutorial, very precise and detailed. You are a good teacher and know how to instruct by stressing the areas where most quilters have a problem or make common mistakes. Taking note of your 'directional fabric' is one place many have a problem. Love the block, too. Not very many of the younger quilters are familiar with the old wooden spools of thread and will not appreciate the use of the spools as a block special to quilters and sewing of many years ago. (But the reference to 'the quilt gods' ... please, remember you are teaching the old and often, the very young quilters who listen to every word. As a child or even today, if my daddy were still alive and I came out with that, I would be in more trouble that I know how to handle.)

Jen you're a natural teacher! Jen you might want to use a 1/4" foot with the side bar so you can have an exact 1/4" seem.

I had the EXACT same problem with my pin caddy being in the wrong place, lol. Splurged the other day and bought a second one. Problem solved!!! Well worth the few extra dollars.

Jennifer, a question, where the edges of the spools are clipped by the seam allowance when the blocks are joined, can you fuss and make the spool end smaller with more white, to avoid that, or do you have to go with a tradition or something, and leave the clip. After all your lovely precision, those blunt cut offs that lose the shape just let the block down. I am loving your series. Thank you so much for making it.
@brookiebakerie

Paper Wool and Glue It looks like the clipped edges you're talking about are all on the outside. That means they'll go inside the next seam allowance and not look clipped, if I'm looking at it correctly. I hope that helps.

This was the hardest one for me. I did it twice! Seam ripping and re-sewing - the whole nine yards. I had to re-cut new pieces

So is "fussy cutting" just working with directional fabric? That's a new term for me - I've heard it before but never knew what it meant. Thanks for the lesson!!
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 7 лет назад
Yes, it can refer to using directional fabric OR refer to cutting a certain part of a fabric out. For instance if there are little smiley faces on your fabric and you want one centered in your block, you would fussy cut around it to be sure it was centered exactly. When working with more complex patterns and fabrics it can be quite fussy - hence, the name :) Thank you so much for watching and following along. We are happy to hear you're learning!

Hi, I am trying to figure out how much of the white fabric to get since the quilt kit is no longer available. Also, when it says in the directions to get 1 (in a color) does that mean to get a Fat 8? Will a new beginner's quilt kit be available for purchase again? Yikes, I haven't even started and I have a million questions lol.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 4 года назад
Hello! In total for the white fabric, you will need 1 ¼ yd. On the patterns the (1) or the (3) show how many you need. So you'll need 3 fabrics of a yellow. Under the "Cut The Fabric" section it shows the White fabric with a 9" x 14" piece. That will fit into a fat eighth which is a 9" x 21". For the bigger diagrams that are 10" x 21" would it into a fat quarter which is a 18" x 21" piece. We are working on getting some of the quilt kits together but I do not have an exact date so keep an eye out! ~Leah

@@ShabbyFabrics oh I did. I may have to redo the first one. Either I cut it wrong or sewed it wrong because it is not as big as the others. But I am ok with doing it again now that I have more experience.
