This is another screenprinting quick tips video about the different colors of screen mesh. Why is some screen printing mesh dyed yellow? Why is some white? What is the difference and what do you need to know about dyed mesh? This educational screenprinting video answers those questions and more in a short video about the colors of polyester mono-filament screen mesh. The difference is in the exposure and this video explains that. Also, yellow mesh may sometimes require a slightly longer exposure time than white mesh, but not always. Since the yellow mesh absorbs light sometimes we may need to increase the exposure times a bit. But that may not always be the case. Since the dyed mesh counts tend to be higher, thinner screen mesh, they hold a lot less emulsion and therefore sometimes can be exposed at the same times as white mesh. That’s something you’ll have to test out in your shop to see. In my shop I run yellow and white mesh at the exact same exposure times. I hope you enjoy the video!

Really great explanation. I was told to reduce my exposure time a little using this yellow mesh. I've been doing 12 min on a design using white...should I reduce by say, a minute? Guess I should just do some light tests...

Best advise on going from 156 to 230, was exposing at 2 minutes, should I cut that time in half for the 230 count?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 4 года назад
I would try 2 minutes and see how it washes out. I think cutting the time in half would be too much. If needed, it may be seconds we're talking about. Maybe 1 minute 45 seconds instead of 2. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

I recently seen a you tube video of a guy and a few girls making screens and they used a curtain fabric called swiss foil mesh that they pick up from a fabric store now I know you use a professional screen but can you tell me what the difference is and why the more exspensive screen is better thanks for all your help
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 лет назад
+Art Barnett A real commercial screen will have the proper mesh tension, thread fiber thickness, mesh openings, and fabric durability to withstand repeated uses with different stencils. People underestimate how much the screen does in actual printing. But you need to think of the screen as an extension of the press. Saving a few bucks to make your own will likely cause problems you won't realize until you have used a metal screen with tight mesh. A good and proper screen will print a better print easier with less ink and it can be used over and over for thousands of prints or different stencils. It's worth the $21 bucks and saves you much time and agony. Take my advice and invest in a pre-made screen. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

I understud that Yellow Mesh more detail and white mesh less detail. So it's better to always buy yellow screen mesh?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 6 лет назад
No, you use mesh counts as needed for each design. You will want a mix of mesh counts for best results. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

What do u think about using orange emulsion on white mesh to mimic the yellow mesh by absorbing the light to allow for more detail?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 6 лет назад
Technically that would not be the case. Orange will not absorb the light enough to stop diffusion and/or halation. If it did it would not expose properly. Any light that hits the white mesh will still bounce. Usually lower mesh counts are white therefore you do not need to worry about this since lower mesh counts will hold less detail anyway. Yellow mesh is for high detail on higher mesh counts.

Thanks for you reply. I asked this because I have a design that have fine lines, halftones and is to be printed in white plastisol. I'm using a hybrid emulsion. With my white 160, the fine lines tend to be harder to wash out with my regular exposure time, but the halftones washes out perfectly. After dropping my exposure time for this design by 30s the fine lines washed out with no problem, but I lost a little detail in my halftones. I was just wondering if using an orange emulsion would get my halftones and fine lines to wash out perfectly with the white 160. I may just have purchase a few yellow 160s to have on hand for a job like this. I may can also try dropping my regular exposure time by 15s since that seems to be the middle ground for the fine lines and halftones in this design.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 6 лет назад
You're welcome. Yes, it could be an exposure issue but it could also be that you need a higher mesh count like 200 which will be yellow. If you cannot hold the detail through exposure manipulation on a 160 then try using a higher mesh count. That will make it easier to render all the detail.

I have a small business that I just started on a small budget ...im using wooden screens. after I do the reclaiming process a few times the adhesive that holds the mesh on the frame starts failing is this typical? and do u have any experience with this on aluminum screens? i might have to upgrade if there is not a way to fix the mesh before extensive damage occurs. . thank you for your time..I have learned a great deal from your videos :-)
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 лет назад
Shae Gooden Glad I could help out through my videos. Usually the mesh adhesive should outlast the screen and frame. So there could be an issue with the manufacturing of those screens. I do not have this issue with my aluminum screens. The screens I sell are made in the US. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

thank you i enjoy your videos keep up the good work my friend i just have one question why dont they just make them all yellow so theres no light scatter why use whight mess when they could just use die mess low count for no fuzzy lines ?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 лет назад
Bill Maris You're very welcome! Because on lower mesh counts it would be futile. They cannot hold the same detail as higher mesh counts and then it would increase the cost of lower mesh counts due to the added step of dyeing. The higher mesh counts hold more detail so using dyed mesh makes sense with them but with lower mesh counts you would never notice any benefits I think. Thanks for watching. I believe that the lower mesh count screens can't hold a high enough detail in them for the light scatter to affect it.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 лет назад
+Nathan Kennedy That's correct. On lower mesh counts, dying the mesh yellow would be futile. They cannot hold the same detail as higher mesh counts and then it would increase the cost of lower mesh counts due to the added step of dyeing. if I put a yellow filter between the white mesh and the exposure unit, the outcome will be the same as yellow mesh? Thanks for this video :D
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 лет назад
+projekthink No, i do not think so. Then the filter absorbs the light before it even hits the emulsion. Besides white mesh is white for a reason. You don't try to get off high detail on 110, 125, or even 156. Those mesh counts are normally white because they can only hold so much detail to begin with. Only higher mesh counts are dyed yellow because they can hold the detail and the dyed mesh helps. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

Alright. I'm a newbie in screen printing. Just curious about the filter since the concept is a little bit same as alternative process in photography :D Thank you for the explanation. Gonna watch your videos more until I can start my own print :D
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 9 лет назад
+projekthink I understand. You're very welcome, glad I can help out. I have a photographic background as well. But this is different with the yellow filter being in front of the mesh. It just won't work the same. In fact it should filter UV light out since yellow or red light is used for safe lights in screen printing dark rooms. Emulsion is blind to yellow or red light.

Hi thank you for the infos. I have a lot of problems with my yellow mesh. My emulsion just washes off while when I had white mesh it was fine. Some people told me that yellow mesh needed more insolation time. I even let it for 30 mins and it stills washes off my drawing when I put it under water. Do you know if it could be something else? I'm kind of fed up to waste my insolation products and time trying to print one shirt since 4 days. Thank you!
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 3 года назад
You're welcome. Not sure. Could be an emulsion to mesh adhesion issue or maybe it's not exposing properly. If the emulsion is a dual cure be sure to add the sensitize. Dual cure emulsions can also expire after mixing in 3 to 6 months depending on the brand. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
