In this Karate tutorial you'll learn a Ryuei Ryu kata Ohan Dai from Okinawa - the birthplace of Karate. This form consists of techniques from Anan Dai, Paiku, Pachu, Heiku and Ohan. For this reason it's an advanced kata performed at higher levels. It's also used by world champions like Ryo Kiyuna at WKF competitions (K-1 Premier League). Good luck!

no need to learn karate, in Bharat there is much more efficient and ancient shastar vidiya, in karate a lot has been lost since martial arts left bharat, including stances and generating punches etc. Karate, including Okinawan karate, doesn't even have the correct way to walk which is the basic mool pentra, way too much length in walking when compared to the tight walking in basic mool pentra. There are channels on youtube where you can be view shastar vidiya, and I don't mean gatka

I'd like to see a video like that too! I love that kata bunkai /ufc mash up that someone did. It shows a ton of striking combos, set ups, sweeps and throws from various traditional martial arts. The video was spliced back to back with footage of the techniques, being applied in a full contact ring or cage fight.

Jesse San what is the historical background of this form and what does Ohan translate to in English?
@KARATEbyJesse
@KARATEbyJesse 3 года назад
Ohan is traditionally written in katakana (オーハン) which is the Japanese phonetic “alphabet” and unfortunately doesn’t transmit its meaning. It was handed down in Ryuei-ryu, a little-known style by the Nakaima family from Okinawa and was originally practiced in secret. There are two Ohan kata, this is the longer version. Hope this helps!

Great kata and great interpretation of it! Seems to be very combative. It would be interesting to see the bunkai. P.S. I notice some elements and principles that exist but were diluted and watered down in Shotokan katas... Thank you!

Nice kata. I like it and doesn't seems too hard to train it. That double hit palm/reverse punch is really an aggressive move at the beginning of the kata where you take initiative right away to eliminate the 1st threat. No wonder you need that kiai to show the rest of opponents you mean it.

Thanks for this Video Jesse-san. The Palm Hit with the Gyaku-zuki was definitely interesting and eye opening. I've been doing it as a double knife hand and grab XD Should try this tomorrow during training and see how it goes. I believe this is the only and best tutorial on Ohan Dai too. Easy for most to understand and learn. Oh and I just got a Seishin Gi, can't believe how comfortable it is versus my Hirota and Shureido Gis. It's definitely lighter and comfortable to wear with enough snappiness in it. Definitely will use it for training more. And here I thought my Takumi was well made and comfortable XD Although, for competition, I always like my Gi thicker.
