I use two custom features in Onshape, Laser Joints and Auto Layout, to draw a box with finger joints to laser cut. I also show you how to export the layout as a DXF file so that you can send it to your laser cutter.

Wow. Nice tools. I don't know anything about feature script...but did you write these tools in feature script? Thanks for making these videos
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons 2 года назад
Thanks but no I didn't write them myself. Anyone can write one and Onshape has them available for anyone to use which is great since it's all free. Another custom feature I use a lot is the thread maker, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8gEed1QF0JY.html

Great video, the only thing missing is Kerf, not sure which setting would affect that. Also Auto-Layout doesn't seem to be available anymore.

Thanks for the kind words. I like to think of a lasers kerf as room for glue haha. If I want a press fit I don't use use these features. forum.onshape.com/discussion/3910/auto-layout-feature Also here is a link for the auto layout. Good luck have fun

why does my dxf file have title blocks?
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons 11 месяцев назад
Cause it's part of the file. When starting a drawing sheet, choose custom template and have border and title block set to do not include.

Hey nice tut! Im trying to add custom features to my toolbar, but it doesn't show up. I tried to manually find the laser cut extension, i added it refreshed the webpage but it is still not in my toolbar. Im thinking maybe it isn't a part of the student package? I have a model that I am struggling to turn into fingerjoints/tabs, do you think you can help me with it if I share it?
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons Год назад
All extension are available to you regardless of if you are on the free version or not. Is it maybe your screen size and they are all under a drop down?

We've had all kinds of issues with featurescripts not showing up on different devices. Some older pcs and chromebooks would fail to search, and different laptops would give different search results. To solve, we log in on a faster laptop, add the featurescripts to the tool bar, then they can be used on the machines that couldn't search for them.

Can you make odd shaped boxes? I want to make a warlock style guitar shaped box (minus the neck). This software could potentially save me a TON of time.
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons Год назад
Do you mean with a laser cutter? Laser cutter would have to be 90 degree angles meeting up at the connections but you can make something called living hinge which let's you make curves on a laser cutter.
@joshuamiller8235
@joshuamiller8235 Год назад
@@MakerLessons the warlock guitar is mostly sharp angles with maybe 1 curve that could easily be straightened. If you google warlock guitar it'll pop up, you may have seen one before.
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons Год назад
Think about how a laser cutter works though. It cuts everything perpendicular to the surface. It only makes 90 degree cuts. So you would have something that looks like it came out of mine craft unless you start to figure out living hinges.
@joshuamiller8235
@joshuamiller8235 Год назад
@@MakerLessons I understand that it's going to look cheap, thats fine. and there will be no curves, it will be all straight angles. I plan to modify the body shape to remove the curves. I just want to easily design a box in roughly that shape. And all the software I could find only did square or symetrical boxes. I could design it myself and do the fingerjoints by hand, but having software that would make the finger joints for me on the shape I choose would save me a lot of time.
@flooplambada
@flooplambada Год назад
@@joshuamiller8235 there are bunch of different featurescripts named "finger joint" on onshape, but the short answer is, yes, you can do non square angles. The laser joint (if you have a good one) will extend the tab/hole to accomodate the longer tab needed to reach. The only glue point of contact becomes the sides of the joint, as the other parts are not flush, but yes, we make octagonal boxes and treasure chests with "bevelled" tops.

@@MakerLessons and what should I do when the plane I am cutting from is too small? Can I somehow divide the drawing into 2 drawings for 2 different planes to cut from? And does the size of the template for the drawing matter?
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons Год назад
I don't think I understand your question. When you thicken a side to make a new part that should be the thickness of your material that you are going to laser cut.
@joostvankerkhof8149
@joostvankerkhof8149 Год назад
@@MakerLessons oh what I mean is that I have to pieces of material I am going to cut from, because one is not enough for all the pieces I need. Is it then possible to divide the parts over two drawings (one for one piece of material, and the rest on another drawing for the other piece of material). I managed to change the thickness

HELP! I'm stuck on third base. I wanna bring it home. I've gotten as far as the 1:1 dxf drawing, but when I import, it is scaled down. How do I scale it back up accurately? I'm blocked when I try to figure out a reference.
@MakerLessons
@MakerLessons Год назад
When you import it into illustrator it should ask you if you want to import it as original size or scale it. Make sure to choose original size
