Learn how to make a CAD model for a complete, wooden, DIY workshop table in 10 minutes using the free CAD software Onshape! It's cloud-based and runs on any device--in a browser on computers, an app on mobile.
This table can be constructed using just 4x4s, 2x4s, a sheet of 1/2” plywood, and wood screws. By following this tutorial, you’ll learn how to model wooden structures (including cut lists) while keeping your CAD model clean and easy to update or modify. Please ask any questions you have in the comments and I’ll try to respond as soon as possible.

Fantastic video, learned alot and I have been using onshape for some time. I’ve been struggling to efficiently make wood projects in onshape but this really showed me the usefulness of the beam feature for this! :)

Great video! Being new to Onshape, I am still figuring out best practises and using shortcuts etc but this video gave me a lot to improve my work. Thanks again!

Happy to help! Please just make sure to come up with your own design if this is for a class project 😄. This is a good place to start, but make something original! Sorry for the late reply...

Very well made video. Really appreciate the shortcut display. Used to be common in coding tutorials but have not seen it in a while. Shame they created beams as frame, but without Lumber.

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, it would be nice to have lumber profiles in frames.

Very nice! I have about 15 years of design experience on Pro/E / Creo Parametric. Just getting started using onshape for woodworking at home. Did you create the "beams" script yourself? Nice work!
@AlnisSmidchens
@AlnisSmidchens 6 месяцев назад
Thank you! Glad to hear things are going well. The "Beams" custom feature was made by Neil Cooke, an employee at PTC Onshape. Note that there is now the "Frame" tool which is an official built-in feature: cad.onshape.com/help/Content/frame.htm I'll need to make an update tutorial at some point that shows how to use it!

When I drag my beams they both go the same direction, what setting am I missing? So they will go towards eachother or away from eachother.
@AlnisSmidchens
@AlnisSmidchens 3 года назад
Sorry for the late reply! The beams tool can be a little fiddly in that way. If you're having trouble getting the beams to do what you want, I recommend making individual beam features for each structural member. The direction they are offset is based on the sketch plane's normal as well as the direction in which the line is drawn.

I'm struggling to figure how you go from part studio (aka multibody part) to drawing efficiently. Is there any follow up drawing to show this?
@AlnisSmidchens
@AlnisSmidchens 6 месяцев назад
You can create insert a Part Studio into a Drawing. More about drawings here: cad.onshape.com/help/Content/drawings.htm?tocpath=Drawings%7C_____0 I'll need to make a follow up tutorial now that the official built-in Frame functionality is available. I'll make sure to include making drawings. Thanks for the feedback!

If you post about it in the forum, then your problem can get multiple eyes on it, and it could help someone else who has the same question! You can post your question here: forum.onshape.com/

Refresh the browser tab (tools are only loaded when the page is loaded) and make sure you're in a part studio, not an assembly.

@AlnisSmidchens
@AlnisSmidchens 2 года назад
Yes, but you need to add it from a computer first. If you don't have a computer, you can add it through the browser on a mobile device, but the browser version is not as easy to use on mobile as the app. More details here: cad.onshape.com/help/Content/customfeature.htm

I'm using the Education version, but this was recorded before a couple of things changed (there's now a sidebar and the logo is different). The modeling tools are the same for free, education, and paid users; it's the license and data management tools that are different. Are there any features that seem to be missing for you?

Thank you for the feedback Kaloyan. This video was created before Onshape released its Frames functionality, so it makes use of the Beams Custom Feature. What was your expectation from the video title? Maybe it could make for a good follow-up video idea! Thanks!
@GentleStorm1
@GentleStorm1 7 месяцев назад
I’m not the OP, but a) it’s a good video for experienced OnShape (OS) users, and b) you asked a really good question in response to the comment. In response to your question, MY expectation from your current video title was that I’d be able to follow along with a tutorial and, in 10 minutes, be able to create a CAD drawing of a wood table in OS. Neither the title nor description indicated a skill level, but I was at least familiar with all of the terms and how they related to the software. However, once the video started, I was lost at Feature Script (FS). I rewound the video to watch your steps to get to FS dialogue, and then figured out how to find a list of them in OS, but I couldn’t figure out how to read or use the files. I also reviewed titles of your other videos hoping to find something about how to use FS, but didn’t see anything (but noted that you commented elsewhere that you need to learn how to better employ FS before you can make a video about it). So, my response here is aiming to be as thoughtful and constructive as you are in your videos. You are very good about explaining information and why you’re doing what you’re doing (I think I watched one about APIs and remember how you briefly explained what metadata is and why you agreed to allow Google/Confluence, etc. to access it); you also do it in a very neutral, calm, and informative tone. Were I to create a video - and there are plenty of reasons I don’t ;-) - I might consider adding “competencies” to the description area (such as, “to successfully complete this tutorial, the viewer should already know how to…”). I know that not everybody reads the descriptions before watching the video and you’re probably more familiar with the analytics than I am, so the suggestion is offered knowing that I know I don’t know how useful it really is. I do hope you continue teaching others in some fashion or another because you’re very good at it AND you seek to improve!
