I watch a lot of Thai lessons on RU-vid and so far you are the best, your English explanations are clear and I like the way you include the Thai alphabet. I’m encouraging my friends to watch your videos.

This is fantastic stuff. Knowing the words come from a metal bar in the early morning, a gong in the morning and afternoon, and a drum at night makes the lesson so much more interesting and makes the words easier to remember.

The best explanation ever regarding telling about time in Thai. The most intriguing part is about the history of Thailand about hitting gongs and drums to tell time for different parts of the day. That makes me hooked to learning the lesson. ❤❤❤

Kru Jack, how do we say 12:15am midnight? Do we say Tiang Kuen 15 naa tee? I know for noon time 12:15pm, we can drop the "wan", and just say tiang 15 naa tee. So what about midnight with minutes? What do we drop? Thank you in advance.

Hi Kru Jack, to add to the proliferation of words used to tell the time I have heard additional terms such as ตอน (dtawn) preceding the parts of the day you mentioned plus even other subdivisions such as ตอนค่ำ (dtawn kham) 7pm - 9/10pm and ตอนดึก (dtawn duek) 7pm - 11pm being used. You did not mention them and these last two even overlap! Are these regional or dialect differences? As a non-native speaker we can tell the time easily using the 24 hour clock but when we ask the time it will be a real challenge to interpret the answer we receive.
@Lun33dge

What an outstanding video! I am in Thai class in Pattaya right now. We were introduced to time yesterday and most of us left class scratching our heads with some homework to practice. This video is an excellent clarification/explanation of what we (tried to) learn in class today.

You have wonderful videos thank you. Could I ask you to at the end say the words and sentences without any English? I understand at first it is so important to explain but just hearing the Thai with photos of words spoken in sentences with no English would make your videos the best on youtube!
@IgetThais
@IgetThais Год назад
Oh, I understand now. At first, I was uncertain whether to include English words or not. But I chose not to because I wanted the learners to hear the meaning directly from me and become familiar with the sounds and words in Thai. If I included English words, the learners would have to constantly translate, like with "ก = gài (chicken)." Instead, I want them to think of "gài" as simply "gài," not translating every time. I'll put the meaning in the description section instead. Thank you for your suggestion, I'll try to keep it simple and not overthink it. Jack.

Interesting... in most languages, the oral/spoken language is "easier" or uses more shortcuts than written or formal language. It seems that this is not the case with telling time in Thai. The formal telling of time is very straightforward and easy to use as opposed to the spoken/informal method of telling time. 🤔

If dropping Chao or Yen when followed by minutes, how to differentiate 6:20am and 6:20pm?
@IgetThais
@IgetThais Год назад
It all depends on the context. If you and your friend understand the same context, you can drop the word cháo or yen. However, if you want to avoid misunderstanding, especially when it comes to things like am or pm, it's necessary to say it or drop it accordingly.
