I get asked this all the time...which beginner guitars do I recommend?
Electric: Yamaha Pacifica. The most versatile electric guitar for the beginner and beyond. they do rock, blues, jazz and metal and anything else you can think of! I LOVE them!

Acoustic: Cort AF510 - These have a folk sized body, which is a smaller sized body better for lady chests, and donut bellies. I've sold lots of these guitars to students and they're impressively well put together. I always have a bunch in when I teach my live guitar classes at my music school.

I used to play out professionally, never knowing a damn thing about the instrument. Several years ago, in an attempt to expunge all of my acquired bad habits, I put the guitars down. The time has come to begin anew, hopefully having lost most of the muscle memory and mental blocks from before. I am beginning with theory, before even picking the instruments up again. I just happened on this video Ricky. I will not be looking any further for support materials for mastering the fretboard for quite some time, maybe never again! Take this revelation, add in discipline and you have a formula for success. You have unlocked a door for me my friend and I wanted to publicly thank you for that. This is quite possibly the single best little nugget of instruction one could ever hope to receive. Well done. Thank You again.

Hi Robert. Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to write them. RU-vid is amazing isn't it?! Sure, I get some really daft and weird comments but comments which can make you doubt yourself and the notion of doing a RU-vid channel. However, comments like yours REALLY MAKE MY DAY. It spurs me on to make more videos. I LOVE teaching guitar and to be able to share it with like-minded people regardless of what country they are in still astounds me. Thank you again, my friend. I would love to see you in the chat on a live broadcast here on RU-vid :)

Finally, someone who will talk to me like I’m an 8 year old while teaching guitar! Sometimes my brain just needs time and repition to absorb a concept, because it’s in overdrive on account of ignorance/confusion crushing any reason. Too many teachers will go: 1, 2 (ok, got it), skip a few (wait, what?), 99, 100 (oook, nevermind).

I just noticed that this video is over 4 years old, so I'm hope I'm not too late to the party. I'm at the earliest stages of my journey and determined to learn the fretboard early on, although its 2D array makes that trickier than a keyboard's 1D arrangement. In that pursuit, I've looked at a *lot* of resources for tips, tricks and hacks and this is by *far* the most helpful one I've come across. While none of the information is exactly new or groundbreaking for me, the way it's integrated has given me hope. As you mentioned at around the 9:00 mark, I got the E string layouts rather quickly and 'A' is coming along, but the prospect of the other three and keeping it all straight has been a bit daunting. Thank you so much for this trail of bread crumbs!

Excellent explanation Ricky - clear and concise. I've been playing guitar for over 60 years and I've got away with not knowing the notes I've been playing throughout this time. My musical tastes have changed and, instead of Chuck Berry etc. with a bass player and a drummer, I now play Celtic melodies with fiddle, pipe and accordion players. This means I have to learn to read music notation to keep up with my talented fellow musicians! Before I can do that, I have to learn the fretboard. This has helped enormously and yes, I learned it in (less than) a day. Thanks Ricky.

I like any approach that helps identifies relationships between notes on different strings. Like the difference of a fourth between adjacent notes on strings 3, 4, 5 & 6. I also think of the relationship between the notes on the same fret for strings 1 and 3 as that of a minor third. Very useful for chords and fills. In addition to the open strings, everyone should know all the notes on the 6th string for power chords or barre chords. And the 1st is obviously identical to the 6th and everything repeats at the 12 fret. So out of 72 notes, there's probably only around 40 that people struggle with. Another approach is to keep a tuner on your headstock and play a game to find every C on the fretboard, then every F# and so on. After a while you can see the patterns.

This was the way I figured it out for myself too, but I took it one step further: that cycle, if you don't do the 1-fret offset when it repeats at B, is actually: B-E-A-D-G-C-F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb ... and then that whole loop repeats. It's the same thing shown in this video, except you repeat BEADG as flats at the end of the sequence (so I think of it as BEADGCF BEADG, and just remember the last BEADG are all flats). I remember it "Bead Juicy Funk" (BEAD, GC=Juicy, F=Funk). Anyway, there's many different ways to look at it and remember it; the important thing is whatever makes sense to YOU! This trick is great for finding your way around at first, but really you should use it to eventually learn the location of every natural note without having to think about it at all :)

Brilliant. So with the mnemonic BEADGCF there are 2 rules. If you jump from string 3 to 2 add 1 fret. If you cross from an F to a B add one fret.
@rickysguitar
@rickysguitar 6 лет назад
Spot on Gazza! It’s super easy when you think of it that way. Be careful when you cross the G to B strings at the 10th fret as both rules happen at the same time and you add 2 frets to maintain the BEADGCF sequence. Thanks for commenting and watching!
@pentachronic
@pentachronic 5 лет назад
I discovered that. Got me first time but then I thought about the rules and they work !! Thanks for this tip. Been using it a lot recently !!
@anti_gravity8446
@anti_gravity8446 5 лет назад
and add another fret for the F on the 10th fret on G string/3rd string so you'll have B on the 12th fret of B string. Cross from F to B = 1 fret, 3rd string to 2nd string = 1 fret.

I have watched many videos on this topic. All of them taught by people who clearly know what they’re talking about. I’m not bashing them at all, but as is this case when trying to learn anything, you eventually find someone or some thing that explains it in such a way that it all clicks. This gentleman has given me that click. I feel like I now have a solid base from which I may be able to finally get this once and for all. Thank you sir.
