Hey honies! Glad you like the yarn I'm using. It's from a company called Yarn & Colors. The gray is called Zen, a tubular nylon/cotton blend and it's color 096; the brown/orange is called Cheerful, a voluminous wool/acrylic blend, and it's color 026. You can find these yarns on Yarn And Colors website - www.yarnandcolors.com/

A tip for beginners: Even though I am still a beginner my tip is don’t let other people tell you what is right and wrong. Choose what it is comfortable for you for example I was told I have to hold my hook like a pencil but the way I hold it makes me 10 times faster than holding it like a pencil! If you do something differently doesn’t mean it isn’t right!
@caitlynbecker3626
@caitlynbecker3626 3 года назад
This! Also good to note that you don't have to hold every hook the same. For example if I'm using big yarn, meaning big hooks (looking at you Bernat Blanket Extra) I change my hook grip to accommodate. I usually do a modified pencil/chopstick hold, but when using extra large hooks I knife hold. It is ALL about what is comfortable for YOU.

I am 72 years old and decided I would learn together with my 10-year-old granddaughter. It’s hard to explain to her when I don’t know how to crochet myself. So this afternoon, I worked my way through your whole video, starting over a number of times and finally getting done with my little swatch. This was so helpful! I feel like I can continue learning more and really get this figured out. Thanks so much!

I have been watching multiple slo mo and beginner videos, and this was the most helpful and clearest. This is the video that did it for me. The smooth yarn, the “training wheels”, the clear location description and why, the different stitches, how to read the stitches, why to rotate, and why to create a chain when flipping. Finally it makes sense! Thanks for remembering what was hard for you when you started-your empathy is appreciated and made this very usable.

I did this whole thing and I'm really proud of myself! I definitely started again multiple times and practiced each individual stitch a ton, dropped a few stitches here and there, and had some issues with tension (tight at the beginning, more even as I went along), but I learned so much! Especially foundational things that I would have definitely missed if I jumped straight into patterns (which I kind of did, but came back to this to nail the basics). Learning to identify stitches by the v at the top was definitely the most useful take away for me, as I'm horrible at reading stitches and get so confused when things come out slightly wonky and I don't know why. Turns out I was putting hook into the wrong place half the time lol. I still need to get better at reading the back and front of stitches, but thank you so much for making this! I'll definitely be coming back to it over and over. You explained things so clearly and just watching how your hands moved was hugely helpful in itself.

I am a macrame artist, but I decided to learn to crochet this year and increase my fiber art knowledge and learn to make cute clothing. I tried a couple different tutorials before coming across this one, and there is no comparison. You are so thorough and answered questions no one else did. I’ll be using this tutorial to help teach my children to crochet as well. Can’t wait to learn more. Thank you!!

I just love the phrase “live loop” and the use of stitch markers in this video. I always use stitch markers and always count stitches in every row. The time doing this is well spent so that mistakes are caught and corrected early. Toni - BRAVO on a job well done. Congratulations on a successful start to Crochet Academy! I haven’t made any apparel yet and have taken the plunge and will be ready to make the Kima Cardi with you!

I've been crocheting since I learned from my Gramma in elementary school. I'm 38 years old now and just stumbled on your video and decided to give it a watch. This is THE best learn-to-crochet video I've ever seen and I will be sharing this with all of my friends who have a desire to learn. Thank you for making this. Well done!

At 85 years I have been knitting most of my life. Now crochet seems like fun! Now for try 32, I went back to the beginning and realised that my tension was too tight. Still having problems holding the hook, the yarn and the work as I only have 2 hands.😊 But I think that I am getting there. Keep posting, it’s great. Thanks lots. Jenny.

I learned how to make Granny squares from my mom years ago, before she passed. I wanted to refresh my memory to start crocheting again. The only stich she showed me was the double, and the slip knot, I looked on you tube to find a video that would move SLOWLY, so I could get a renewed grasp on beginning again. most were too fast for me, and I was frustrated. But, then I found this channel, and I was so happy to find you! You have a wonderful teaching style and for a "beginner(again)" I could follow, and not lose sight of what you were doing. You have a calm way of teaching, and I am so excited to begin again! I am going to Michaels tonight to buy the basics, including the "training wheels!" (lol!), and begin to practice. Thanks for the leg up, and I will be watching your videos as I progress! Thanks again!!!!!

Hello love….I just had to say THANK YOU!!!! My great grandmother tried teaching me to crochet when I was a young girl and I couldn’t get it down and she also struggled because I’m left handed. I’ve always wanted to do this and I had a fire sparked to try again. I watched your video the very end of March and today I’ve got a little simple baby blanket for my niece and her baby #2. Can’t wait to continue learning from your videos. My great grandmother would be so incredibly proud of me. 🥰

That moment when she counts the Vs in the stitch and you are somehow missing 6 lol. That said, so thankful that I can follow this in my own time and allow myself to walk away and start back. You have already answered some of the questions that I had about how to accurately count stitches and place stitch markers. SOOOO helpful and awesome. I am determined to stay on track so that I can be a proud member of the crochet along. Thank you for this content!

Toni, I love how you SHOW and explain how and why to do the basic stitches, including how to hold the hook and the yarn. I do find the tip to use only one turning chain for half double crochet rows and double crochet rows very useful to produce a straight strong edge for seaming. You've made an excellent video for me to share with beginners. 😊

I did not do well, but then I found this video and I literally just did my first chain like you with the hook in the right hand. I put your video on .75 speed and I was able to understand your process. I can't thank you enough.. I think it is unusual for a middle aged man to suddenly pick up crocheting but I truly love it. Thank you for showing me the way.

So im learning in honor of her and so i can hopefully pass this down to my daughters & grandchildren. With that being said, ive tried numerous videos and this is the best. I learned to hand crochet as a kid, but wanted to finally learn how to crochet, be able to actually make things… I’m 39 and it’s something I’ve just never had time for before now… I picked up some cheap yarn and a pack of needles, along with some yarn needles , and made some stitch markers I watched another popular RU-vidr yesterday, and although I was beginning to understand it, I had so many issues with tension! She had a video on tension, which still didn’t help me tbh. This morning i decided to try more videos by other creators, and im so glad I found this one!! The teaching style is amazing! We all learn differently, so maybe it’s just what I needed, but I’ve made so much progress in the past half hour correcting my tension issues! I’m still struggling as any newbie will, and I think I need to see other ways to hold yarn bc now that’s my highest struggle I think… but the tip about how to hold your work, and to pull the yarn down the needle, that has solved most of my tension issues alone!! I also struggled with the single crochet yesterday, I figured out that I was going through the holes wrong (I think) so I’m working on that right now. I know I’ll get it now and I’ll be able to move on to the next thing (which is also in this video but I’m not there quite yet). I would definitely recommend this video to anyone who is wanting to learn how to crochet! It’s by far the best one that I’ve come across, and I have watched a few, other than the one I was working with yesterday! Thank you so much for your patience in making these videos to help others learn!!

Thank you for this video, Toni! I've been crocheting for a little over 7 years now but decided to get a little refresher and am so glad I did! The way you only chain 1 for double crochet rows is intriguing to me and I like the look so much better than what a chain 3 gives you - I am definitely going to have to try that and not chaining before fastening off.
