Very educational well done. A message to all those who criticise him for the “Christ complex”, as an atheist I would ask how does person who looks like the perceived Jesus character paint a self portrait without it looking like the perceived Jesus. As a matter of real interest who decided what Jesus looked like as I understand there are no contemporary pictures of the man.

YOU NEVER PUT OIL PAINT DIRECTLY ON THE CANVAS!!!! That is not a proper ground. The first step SHOULD HAVE BEEN to first lay down a layer of rabbit skin glue, THEN the colored ground with Linseed Oil!!!!! Linseed Oil is too acidic to put directly onto the canvas. It will eat through the linen in time.

Although the many breaks: Loved to watch and hear this process, there is enough space for the student to fill in his or her own idea of set up; in my case I should immediately involve the background in tones in order to get grip on the whole: on the tones in the portrait/figure specially. Within this context it is natural to mention the meaning of 'seeing' Christ: Thank you very much!

I'm no pussy but I'd strongly recommend not dipping your fingers into Vermilion. However as for your process, our thoughts are very similar. Studio painters who align themselves with this method and subject matter share so much in common but we feel we are alone. Maybe that is very important too.

trust me, you can get the exact same look by using a wal-mart canvas drop cloth and the cheapest house paint - wasting studio time to make some kind of perfect canvas suggests a lack of confidence in the finished work - the best way to learn how to paint like an old master is to practice it without feeling the need to rush to sell or show anything

don't worry, some artists, like me for example, have been protesting the low-effort "modern" art that has plagued the art galleries for a century now, protesting by painting things people's eyes like to see rather than forcing a person into some intellectual cage to understand it, protesting by striving for excellence rather than for ego-strokes and money, not taking 'fork in the road' commissions to make a 'living' - Gauguin had the right plan, forget a society that literally had human zoos at the fairgrounds and paint on your own terms!
@unklejon4690
@unklejon4690 8 месяцев назад
Let’s look back at the renaissance period many of these “great” artist produced there works on a system whereby the apprentice would do everything but the face and the “master” would finish it. So the apprentice became a duplicator of the masters style and then later when he had paid off his indenture he made his money by repeating the loop with his students. All in all not a recipe for innovation. Lots of predictable posed pictures. If Giotto’s apprentice painted the picture it was still sold as a Giotto. However if I were to paint the same picture it would be called a fake or a forgery. All things have to evolve to survive. May I openly suggest that if you don’t like what you see, then don’t go again. Think yourself lucky you can visit galleries, plural. Most people here in UK outside London have very little choice
