I learned to play this song when I was around 18 years old or so. It doesn't matter I played it wrong. I played it in standard tuning as well. it was hard to do it that way. I'm like 64 years old now and I'm going to try to find time to work on the much easier open tuning version! thanks! Your version is almost exactly how I came up with it in standard tuning! Very well done. That song is all about nuances as most of Page's acoustic/12 string songs tend to be. Iv'e seen it played in open G and tuned to Esus4. Generally I like to stick to the studio tuning but it really sounded great in standard. Very clear and concise. Thanks man enjoyed it.

I though *I* was crazy for playing it just like this for DECADES ... took me forever, though I started at 16, way before RU-vid ever existed. The G suspended 4th tuning makes this song a breeze, but after about 5 decades of practice, I made it sound at least as recognizable as you. Don't play it on my Stratocaster, though; I've always played it plugged in on my Fender T-Bucket acoustic/electric. Kudos to you, my brother-in-doing-it-the-OTHER-way ... (wink).

Sounds really good but the open tuning just makes the song for me the way the strings just ring. BTW for anyone that wants to know, the album version is D-G-C-G-C-D and the live version is E-A-D-A-D-E. Very cool to hear it in standard tuning though, great job. It's a beautiful song in any tuning.

I laboriously transcribed this myself about 20 years ago in standard tuning just like what is shown in this video. I could never get certain parts to sound “right” and got frustrated, so I stopped playing it. I didn’t know in the pre-RU-vid days that Page was playing this piece in Gsus4 tuning. Guess I missed that detail even though I watched The Song Remains The Same about a hundred times. So did a lot of other guitar players I knew who only played pieces of it in standard tuning without any consideration to an alternate tuning. The G#9 to G9 slide at 7:51 always intimidated a lot of people I knew who never played any jazz and didn’t have the fret hand strength. As soon as they tried to play that, they wanted to give up this song! LOL This tune is very easy and relaxing to play in the DGCGCD (Gsus4) tuning that it was originally written in. I’m never playing this in standard tuning ever again…

Ive been looking for a standard tuning for this since i first picked up a guitar back in 1996 when i was 16. love the DGCGCD tuned one. it sounds heavenly on a 12 string acoustic.

awesome bro, been wanting to learn this tune for acoustic gjgs but the tuning was keeping me from pursuing it seriously...pretty incredible approximation of the real deal in standard tuning, im gonna get to work! AND i just picked up a mel9 pedal so i am thinking how awesome it would be to have some mellotron string sounds blended in, just like the awesome album version...oh, yeah! dont listen to critics, i am a working musician who appreciates that i can now play this tune and go right into that request for simon and garfunkel without having to retune! thanks!

Glad I came upon this! I had been working out a standard tuning version for the same reason many have - a desire to be able to leave my guitar tuned as it is because it can be a hassle to take the time and retune, and I don't have an arsenal of guitars with which I could leave one tuned alternately. This really validated many of the choices I'd made and gave me many voicings that help fill out the places where I had whittled down to one or two notes. A minor point, beginning at 11:44, the passage you play differs from the published one in the Warner Chappell book version playing the cascading runs at the end of each verse. The runs each are played A B G A E G D with the chromatically rising bottom note going on to D to D# to E to F with each repeat. You have the first instance of the run going A B G A D# G D (D# played in the place of the E) and the subsequent runs using the E. It makes them sound less unified, and different from the record. The chromatic D to F underneath the progression is intact even as one plays the run preceding them the same each time. I thought I'd learned it wrong, but in comparing yours to the published one, my ear hears the published version as the correct one. Total dick thing to bring up but there is some merit in playing it like Page does, so I figured I'd point it out. Great video!

Love the lesson. Not always sure whether you are sometimes using plectrum or fingers to pick. Are you also muting the high E string when you play into the first slide ?.
