In this video series I take you through the steps that you need to know in order to effectively read construction drawings. This video focuses in on elevation drawings while comparing to the actual house that was built from the drawings. The goal is for you to visualize the finished building which is an important element in reading drawings and I talk about having a process that you go through when reading drawings.
I reference my textbook Understanding Construction Drawings for Housing and Small Buildings by Tom Stephenson, It can be purchased on Amazon.

Thank you so much Tom! I'm so glad I found your channel. You do a great job and pass on your knowledge to others with great patience and modesty. I would be happy if you could do a series on quantity calculations (takeoffs) and what are the methods for calculating floors, walls, etc. Thanks again and keep on going!

Thanks Barak, I will get to that at some point as there are many things you can do in takeoffs to make it easier

Appreciate your extensive knowledge on construction drawings. I work in the trade field but I have always been limited due to not understanding drawings. So far out of the first 4 videos my confidence in learning how to read them is greater than I imagined. Again Thank You Professor Stevenson!!

Hello Tom, Thankyou so much for such amazing videos and lessons. I am located in Mississauga Ontario, a recent graduate, working as an estimator, had a quick question. I recently came across with a drawing for one of our project in GTA. It has dotted cross line in the Garage area. does it represent the celling of the area. Also as new estimator I get stuck when I calculate Material takeoff for celling such as drywalls insulation etc. How to understand if there is a drop celling. Would highly appreciate if you can give some lessons on General Material estimations. Thankyou so much Again :) Regards Rashmeet

Hi Rashmeet, I’m happy the videos help, without seeing it is hard to say for sure but it is likely there to indicate that the ceiling is at a different height then the rest of the house ceiling, its dropped, if it is the first floor plan. If it is the foundation plan it is indicating that the slab is at different level then the first floor. Hope thar helps, and i will try to do some basic estimating videos at some point. Check my playlists on my home channel page for the floor plan video.
