Great video, know getting basic idea out, and regulations. In RI we get tons, get upset seeing people getting limit day after day, illegal sizes ect.. call Dem never show..
Steamers are not called soft shell clams. Soft shell clams are also called mud clams or Eastern soft shell clams. A steamer clam is also called a littleneck clam. The little neck clam and soft shell clam are two different species. The steamer clams have rings and ridges and the soft shell clams do not have rings and ridges. If you leave any part of the neck out above the surface, a bird will find it and eat the clam. Plant the clam below the surface since their neck will stretch out at least 2" even when they are small. This will keep the birds from finding and eating them. You must be on the East coast because I have never saw anyone using a rake on softshell clams; I use a shovel.
I think we all know, but regional we call them steamers, because we steam them and dip in butter or liquor, or fried clams with bellies.. on shores of RI we get a lot, and cherrystone, cohaugs ect. I don't think tried to say a biologist? Or expert? Just someone getting clams? I'd be upset at people taking illegal clams..
In Massachusetts, we call softshells steamers and we call littlenecks a specific size of hardshell clam (or quahog). It is illegal to shellfish with a shovel in certain towns in Massachusetts as it's very indiscriminate and will break a lot of the shellfish you are going for! So interesting the regional differences!
@@lizlewis1881 I know the softshell clams we have on the west coast were brought here from the East coast. I have heard of quahogs but that explains what they are called on the east coast. It is interesting to learn the differences between what they are called and the regulations in different states. Thanks for the info. I see people harvesting clams with clam guns, shovels, and rakes here. I have always used a shovel and is legal for all species here. If you break it, you take it.
Yes softshell clams are called steamers here in Ipswich Mass. Little necks can be steamed but we don't call them steamers here. Shovels are not allowed for clamming on the east coast.
