hey bro, ive made it 75% of my software schooling 2 year program. I'm hungry man. I swtiched from oilfield to Software 1 year ago after my dad died, i got a divorce, i moved provinces, changing career industries... To start over at 34 in software development. I am thankful for my schools coverage of all the tech you spoke of in the beginning of this video... While not an expert.... i show up everyday on time, i do my shit, i do extra, i built an AirBnB business to fund school, I got jacked in the gym, im the president of my student association, i never want to go back to how I was before the oilfield. broke.... considering quitting drinking coffee because i could save $60 per month. ive been hard on myself this past year. and i feel guilty when i slow down because i know it is do or die for me right now. Thank you for the video bro.

@@qestn thanks. Took me a while. Since 2015 actually when I got interested in tech. My path was: 2015: QA Tester job 2016-2019: studying to for my Bachelors in Software Development 2019-2020: QA Tester role again before getting laid off because of the pandemic 2021-2022: Back to school for my Masters in Computer Science 2022-November 2023: Software Test Engineer on a contract role with Microsoft Now finally out of the testing space with my first role on the development side. Happy with my journey and kept pushing to get here.

@@kevanbarter You're a CS people bro, you know the in and outs of a computer and you said that you were exited of programming. Most of watchers of the channel don't know anything about computers and don't have any CS diploma plus that they just want to be in the field for just money. I'm sorry but they are not gonna make it, the web dev booming era has over. Now to get a job you gotta like your field and have at least an engineering or cs diploma.

It is still worth it. But only for the people that actually like what they are doing. If you're getting into programming because of the money you will just not succeed. The actual problem here is people sharing on social media that programming is fun, easy and a nice cash pot. Then you get people with no actual interest that just don't know how to figure shit out for themselves and altogether ruin the sector for everyone else.

Amen! Even after 30 years in the field, I still love to code and test stuff on the weekend and some nights. Not because of a promise of higher salaries, just because I damn love it. This is my passion. So yeah, if someone try to compete with me only on the base of money, they don't stand a chance. Money is a good motivating factor for small bursts, but passion can be used to sustain a marathon.

I'm 35. I think sometimes, that I don't have enough time to spend it on learning programming. And the risk is obvious. Maybe you will get the job, but it will takes years when you can tell - "I have learnt how to make this and this". The second thing is, that you will be doing the jobs, where the requirements are still low. I mean, we can not tell in such situation about "making a career" or "having a stable position". Change my mind.

Man is speaking facts. Technology is not a get rich quick scheme. It's not something that you can just hop into. I went into technology because my parents weren't too keen on me doing a music degree, and I'm forever grateful that I'm studying Computer Science. The opportunities I have for myself now are greater. And I still pursue music alongside, a lot of my research combines those 2 fields. I never would have discovered that if I didn't study computer science. This was a really nice episode, you should do more solo eps like this.

This video came in at the right time. I got a job this year after quitting my sales job in 2022 and after 15 months, I got the tech job I studied for. But it’s not high paying yet and I discovered it’s still a lot of work to do after React and Tailwind. I’ve been in 4/5 months now and the work rate demotivated me a bit but I’m no where where I want to be and I’m still struggling with money so I just need to put enough in so that I can increase my salary and take things a bit further. Thank you for this!

Thanks for the video. I am going attending school for WebDev and this video is facts. Tech skills alone will not land you the job, there has to be other aspects that make you stand out along with tech skills. Though I am not a wizard of Oz yet in web dev arena but a little bit at a time I will eventual get there. A person have to understand that with inflation and times changing, its kind of like the internet boom where network guys were getting inflated salaries and when the bubble busted they were back to regular salaries. There has to be a willing to put in the work and take advantage of waves when the tide is high and be able to adapt when the tide is low. Awesome video 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

Yeah, the RTO in tech is super hard to dodge. I had to take a slight pay cut to remain full remote. Current job does have me flying out occasionally, but I get to stay at home and still make decent base salary.

Let me tell you something. After failing to get started for many years with tones of excuses, I started on august 2022 studying full time as a developer while working full time. I used to wake up at 4am, start right away until my shift starts around 12 then work until 9.30 pm and rush home to read a little more on what I did earlier before getting some sleep. I still was behind and used the weekends to catch up. By january 2023, I passed my courses but it was getting very exhausting and at work, they changed the working schedule so I found a middleground with my employer where I worked 60% instead and it helped alot. Now I am doing my internship and work only occasionally. I use that free time to learn even more and on certain days I put around 12 hours and on an easier day 6-7 hours. With that said, start putting the hours. That's the ONLY way.

I am 47 and starting over in life and I am all in on it. I am starting out with python to learn that first then I will work on JS and html later on. Learning it is hard for me but I am willing to put in the work to do it though.

I almost finish the NodeJS section and has been quite a journey and still !! I hope in the next month or so I will start the job hunting! Inflation breeds bad habits. The whole "get a job in 6 months and make 6 figs" was a perversion of easy money policy. A lot of people think you can easily become a dev. There is nothing easy about it. If you can't do it better than an LLM, you're gonna be hard pressed to find a job.

Great video, I definitely resonate with this one. The journey (more like a battle) into tech is a long and hard one. It’s hard trying to figure what all you need to know to have the best chance at breaking in and if you’re not careful you could be spinning your wheels for months or years! I am on my journey now through a Udemy course and from watching your videos and a few other content creators I am most definitely sticking it out. The chance of being able to set myself and family up for the future is too hard to pass up. I am at the point that I want this more than i want to breathe. I don’t know the situation of the guy who ghosted you.. but I got to say circumstances like this make people who can truly have an impact on a newbie may not want to try because of being burned. When another could truly benefit from such a great opportunity.

You can have health issues without even realizing. That's the worst that can happen. It's like "It's all okay. I didn't do this stuff, I'll do it later. And then next time (may not be the very next day though) you again say I'll do it later." You are constantly battling to get that dopamine and motivation for things that actually matter. For me it was an issue to even start doing some stuff because there is so many other things to be worried about. Health is the most important aspect in your life. When you are in good health you can do everything. When you are not, you are basically a failed person and no one wants to be viewed that way. It's better to be open, but even then there are people that don't really think you have big problems. Nerves are always at stake and mental health problems can be recognized as physical ones. For example, I can tell you that LCD screens should be a thing of the past. Why? They emit blue light straight into your eyes. This physically DESTROYS your motivation, your ability concentrate, ruins your sleep schedule, weakens your eyesight (nearsighted activity) and memory. So you have all these things going on and you think something else is a cause. It's freaking not. Light overexposure can act 100% the same as drug. So instead of thinking, if I can't use LCD screen and be a programmer, what can I do? Well there actually are solutions such as RLCD screen and EINK screens. They are quite expensive now, but for someone to work for hours every day on a screen, these things are a god bless. Blue light overexposure suddenly becomes a thing of past. You have a clear mind again and you can think about stuff and actually realize it. Remember, companies don't want you to be healthy. This is a capitalist system and all that matter is money and control over it. It's very very simple. There's no need to say something is a conspiracy. All companies want is for you to be addicted to their products for the rest of your life. It's like paying a subscription without even realizing that you are doing it. America is #1 in this, but other countries are just as bad. It's human nature to exploit things, but to me personally, it's horrendous what some people are capable doing just to earn 10% more or whatever. At the end, this very system harms everyone. The problem is, how long will it carry on without people realizing and blaming it on something totally irrelevant?

Excellent video. I don’t make even half what you’re making, but am still in the same boat when I think of how I was living even 5 years ago. Never want to go back. I got my developer job in June ‘19. I went from a 5 minute bike ride to an 80 minute commute and it was worth it. Got over a 20k/yr salary increase which, sadly, almost doubled what I was currently making. I live in an area with a much lower cost of living than you as well so only making 82k a year with about 3% and 5% raise every year is fine by me.

What a good, honest video! And I like how you said that giving up gaming for a few months is a sacrifice 😅 I know people who grinded for 2 years in order to get a strong foothold as programmers. The global interest rates are high now and that has a negative effect on tech, but they'll go back down eventually.

I have been learning to code for over a year now and for the last 3 months I have been applying for jobs. Since I have no prior experience it is hard to get my foot in the door. I do not know what was the case with that guy but If got such an opportunity I would definitely not waste it and show up every single day to learn and improve my skills.

I encourage you to make a list of local companies and find what tech stack they use build your project with the same technologies they use, also literally go get your foot in a door, boots on the ground lol. visit them and ask to meet with the managers. above all don't quit!

It took me 6 months to find an opportunity in 2018. Its harder right now because of the economy so it may take longer. Do not give up! The economy will improve at some point, usually sooner than expected. When the industry gets rocking again, and if you were able to stay on the journey, its going to be awesome. Keep coding, applying, networking, studying for interviews.

Sometimes depression and demotivation are the real issue. He probably thinks he's in a hopeless situation. Sam Altman said something along the lines of ''successful people gain energy from momentum but as soon as they hit failure they lost that energy. It's important to take a break and try again but its easy to get caught in a loop'. I'm trying to break into Data Science and have come a long way but I'd be lying if I said I never hit those low points. In fact I'm struggling to find a data set I want to work on for an ML project due to lack of energy and inspiration. Every idea I think of doesn't seem relevant or of value and I don't want to pick something only I care about for fear it might be seen as stupid.

I know that effect you're talking about. Although I can't speak for interviewers, it's probably best if you do pick something that you care about and that helps with motivation. I doubt they're going to be hung up on the topic, unless picking topics to research for their company is part of the job description - and in that case they'd probably be more interested in your process than what you actually ended up picking. In fact, picking something unusual might actually help you stick out a little. In the end, a company might just as well reject you for covering a popular topic as they might for an unpopular one, or for totally topic unrelated reasons, as they might for you conforming to expectations as well as sticking out. The absolute worst thing that can happen is that you remain stuck in choosing a dataset, and the frame of mind you're describing comes with the *acute* danger of exactly that happening. That'd be worse than what you could possibly lose by making the wrong choice in a mental game of 4-dimensional job-application-chess you're playing in your head. *Do this* : Give yourself three weeks to pick a dataset. Browser and research the datasets in that time, narrow them down to a couple of choices, and a few days before the three weeks are over, mark a dataset. If you've not made a definitive choice in the remaining days, that's the dataset you'll work with. I wish you all the best. :)

I think you should leave it at "I don't know his situation". There's an infinite number of possibilities for why someone would ghost you in that situation. Sometimes people don't know how to handle awkward situations, like maybe he didn't like your advice or mentorship style, maybe he found a mentor he just happened to click with more, maybe he felt really guilty about getting it for free and wasn't used to that and was mildly distrustful because of childhood trauma and didn't know how to deal with it, etc.

I've learned the hard way, people who have no skin in the game will not appreciate what you do for them. The fact that the guy was complaining about his situation was a clear indicator he was more interested in finding an excuse than finding a way. I have mentored developers and have found they're able to do it on their own with a little guidance. So chalk this up as a learning experience. The same goes for volunteering. I've donated my time to help non-profits and it's usually a colossal waste of time. My stance now is I am very careful as to what I volunteer for and I usually wait for someone to ask me for help instead of offering it. Your heart is in the right place. You need to focus on where your talents are best utilized and appreciated.

It's hard work to learn how to code unless you enjoy coding, which most people should if they are going into this field, or if you know you have no other options and your survival depends on it. For me, it's more of the former reason with some help from the latter reason. The actual hard work comes after you land your first job, the amount of non-coding related shit you have to deal with while keeping your mental health and capacity to be able to progress is unreal. Some people, including myself, are not ready to balance both working hard at improving my skills while maintaining physical and mental health from work stress. I think the most important thing is to make sure you have the habits to maintain your physical and mental health no matter what career you're trying to go into, otherwise everything else falls apart.

@@chrisseantalks I think what caught my eye was the video felt authentic. You spoke about things from your personal view on how you felt things are in tech and your struggles. Truth talk: I've been watching content on RU-vid lately from Software developer Content creators and lately the content has been more click bate. It is starting to become more of a thing to get you to watch their channel versus offering value. So I've been unsubscribing and blocking these channels and watching a very few RU-vidrs which actually add value. This video was a very good example of what I am looking for in a content creator. Lastly it was thoughtful what you tried to do to help that person, that was good to hear.

I feel your frustration about the dude you wanted to help but here’s the truth of the matter, it’s your vision not his, so you shouldn’t expect him to be as commit as you are to seeing him become a software engineer. I learnt this when trying to help people like this, that it’s best to have people tell you what they want and then you support them in that direction.

All the people that’s complaining about not finding a job what are you doing? There’s been thousands of talented, experienced people that’s been laid off, why not start networking and doing projects with these people? You never know what can come out of it. That project could possibly grow into a MVP and get seed funding. STOP COMPLAINING!!!

The most valuable thing coming into the tech industry isn’t a degree or certificate but the mentorship from an experienced developer. Don’t know the individuals situation for not attending but this was a golden ticket to get that help from someone like Chris.

I would argue that dev in Asia and the West is very different in term how we are being treated. Equity for example i dont believe in Asia we get those. In the West dev usually get it when they enter the company Work lifr balance also another topic to talk about usually in asia many dev are treated like code slave

I am a computer programmer - have been just over 40 years. It’s never been easier to find programming work than it is now. It’s never been easier to find information and get instant help & feedback than it is now. There is an overwhelming amount of work, and nowhere near enough programmers to do even half of it. Not talking about “coding” or doing “full stack web dev” .. but actual programming.
