My cat would always hide in the back closet when I played/gave lessons, on flute, clarinet, or sax. Clarinet was her least favorite, which is funny, since Prokofiev gave the cat theme from Peter and the Wolf to the clarinet!

I have two cats - one cat does not mind the flute and will just nap while I play, occasionally looking up when I play notes in the high register. My other cat hates the flute and will immediately run out of the room when I start putting my flute together. She will also yowl at me once I am done. LOL

I am a pianist, and I swear my dog knows her cadences, because she always thinks practice time is over when she hears them 😂

Just whip out the piccolo if you really need the pets to let you practice; my cats flee in terror, but I think my dog is just going deaf (she’s 11) because it doesn’t bother her much!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has these conversations with their dog 😂 My chihuahua used to howl along for a bit at first when I'd start playing, which was hilarious. Now she mostly naps through it somehow, she's also a senior now. Miguel is such a cutie. Who could ever say no to that face 😍

Ha ha! Miguel was trying to sing with you. My dog also sometimes sings and interrupts with a toy. Mostly he is good, but if I'm playing something repetitive like scales he disappears to our bedroom....tunes are fine though!

Miguel is like “I can be bubbly too” lol when I play my flute my orange cat demands pets and will come and meow at me until I stop. My other cat doesn’t care, she’ll just lay next to wherever I am.

"...there's so many freaking notes in here." I get it! And yes, we all have those days, those trainwreck or traffic jam practice sessions, but Miguel's sweet song would have destroyed any seriousness in me. 😅 You continued so bravely! Hoo boy, have I ever had those days, though! With my Haynes in the shop over the holidays, getting through these past few weeks' programs with my nice-but-it's-a-spare-for-a-reason flute has made a few more of those days than I like. But the Haynes is home as of today, so we get to close out the Christmas season comfortably.

I love that your dog howls while you play. Mine does too. Sometimes it's hard not to take it personally....as if it's his criticism of my playing LOL

Katie, I'm sorry about your disk drive problems. I note that you use an iPad, so I'm guessing that your computer is probably a Mac of some variety. Do you not make Time Machine backups to an external drive? These are lifesavers sometimes. Also, you might look into investing in a NAS (Network Attached Storage), which involves a bit of up-front investment, but it's not exorbitant. There are many things besides simply backing things up that you can do with it. For one thing, you can put your Time Machine on it. Also, other people can use it in the same way. I don't know what your husband's computer requirements are, but I'm guessing they are similar to yours, and that there are things that are particular to each of you and things that you'd no doubt like to share. All this can be done using the same machine. A RU-vid comment is not the place to expound on this, but you live in New York, so I'm sure expertise is very nearby. I'm sure if you expend a little time and effort you can set up a system that will prevent you from having another disaster like you just experienced. The last thing any creative type of person wants to experience is to have their lifework disappear.
