This is such a great concept. As a jazz musician, my best learning took place 50 years ago when I started studying saxophone. I dropped the needle on my LP'S over and over and over again. Hundreds of times, transcribing onto manuscript paper. The music stayed with me. The students who just read transcriptions do not end up synthesizing the jazz style, and their ears don't develop. Your ideas are fantastic! Makes sense
Thanks! Yes, every time I search for transcription ear training most results are about jazz. On chinese-forums and Language learner's forums users are also familiar with transcription and recommend it, but almost nobody talks about it on RU-vid because viewers tend to look for "easy" ways to learn.
I am finding this frustratingly difficult, while at the same time it feels powerful. It really highlights holes in my learning, which I appreciate. For example, 'Ha' o 'a' or 'habiA,' very similar sounding in the flow of the story-- I get the story easily, but the specific words, which will lead to a much more clear understanding, are still difficult at times
@@BobHiltner Hi, Bob. Something that can make this exercise less frustrating is using a Chrome extension such as GlotDojo, which will help you repeat an individual phrase. I explain how to use it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1iQh6IJwO9U.html
Gracias, maestro.
I learn SO WELL in this format and at this speed. Your voice has slow, perfect pronunciation. Thank you so very much. I'm FINALLY enjoy learning Spanish again!
Thank you for doing this. I joined. As a person who has jumped around to all kinds of different methods, I think this is the best. Focusing content on the list of 5000 most commonly used words gives me a specific goal to reach for. I also like the way you get right into it and force us to listen immediately in Spanish without cluttering the process with an endless switch between Spanish and explaining things in English. Apps are notorious for doing that as well as wasting time on picking words to complete sentences and other useless exercises. I read, I listen, I read, I read as I listen, and slowly but surely, I know I’m acquiring the ability to understand the most important vocabulary in a repetitive, natural, yet systematic way. I highly recommend this to others who have been frustrated trying to learn forever without really knowing where they are going. Thanks again.
excellent exercise, ever since i added transcribing into my routine ( thanks to you) my listening and reading abilities have skyrocketed!! This took me 3 weeks to transcribe!! now on to part 2....
I still going on wek two! The transcription and depp listening is really tuning my ear. Plus I'm getting very, very used to actually hearing the verb endings. Wow!
Muchas gracias por el video!
I struggle learning Spanish. I feel like I’m just to old to learn new things. I wish I started younger. I’ve been trying almost a year. Primarily with app. But, listening and understanding is difficult. Thanks, I enjoy this channel.
Anthony, don't lose faith. I almost gave up at one point too. I just figured that I was never going to get over that hurdle. It seemed like I was stuck and thought that it was going to be impossible to get any better. After years of thinking that that was it, I decided to try again and it just started to click. My "in" was reading. Someone offered me the first Harry Potter book in Spanish. I had never read the series in English. I thought, well I'll try it. I ended up reading the whole series during covid lockdown in Spanish. I read aloud the words as I cruised along not worrying about every single detail. AND boy was it fun!!! It improved my comprehension of spoken language immensely. Suddenly, I was understanding so much more than I had in the past. I try to squeeze in different types of practice methods without being too judgmental with myself. I think that the key is to find the fun in it. I like to listen to Spanish language radio in the morning as I am getting ready for work, for example. It's fun. Anyway.................que tenga buena suerte y siga!
I love your channel, you speak perfectly for people learning. Thank you Thus story touches me as well and helps me remember why I began learning this language. Por causa un mujer misteriosa
This video is quite a jump from your recent animated series like Pineapple! As I build my vocabulary lists from your videos I find that I have a great mixture of verb tenses and moods such as preterite, imperfect, subjunctive, past subjunctive and so forth. Definitely makes the vocabulary list a challenge when learning to speak Spanish, but obviously necessary to underhand it. Thanks again for all of your hard work.
Me gustó mucho!
This is a wonderful exercise! And also the cat looks exactly like my cat Hunter who passed away last year. The story is wonderful and i can't wait for the next part. ¡Muchas gracias!
Hi! Welcome to the channel. I'm sorry for your loss. I added the cat to the story because my cat had just died, and I dreamed of finding another cat like her.
wow. takes some time to write all this down. thank god writing espanol is my strongpoint.i just finished 1A and B. a few mistakes but im enjoying this method and i hopefully this is really what i need.
Hello, I really hope you create another transcription exercise on you channel of this kind. I find the stories enjoyable (enough) to transcribe and watch 20+ times. Do you have more story-based transcription exercises as private content somewhere?
Hi! In the members section I'm publishing short comprehensible input videos which can also be used for this. The currently available videos are super simple (they're for beginners), but in a few months you'll start finding more complex videos as the course develops. I'm also working on a new story for the public channel called "The White Cat".
¡Hola, Katherine!
I would like to ask if on 2:18 you said "son palabras que VALE la pena aprender" or maybe "son palabras que VALEN la pena aprender"? "No te rindas fácilmente", right?
Me encantó tu idea y tus consejos.
Muchas gracias! Me encantan tus videos comprensibles! Solo puedo decir: gracias, gracias, gracias!! @@spanishinput
I really like the transcription method and find it very helpful. This is the fourth video that I've transcribed and I'm seeing improvement. Thanks so much for creating this content for us. However, I think that there are a few errors: 08:49 Cuanto terminé mi café. I think the video actually said "Cuando". 11:29 ¿Quizás yo soy solo su plan B? Try as I might, I'm unable to hear the "de". Is it there?
Wow, I am super impressed with how well you did the exercise! Congratulations! Yes, the first two are errors in the subtitles. I've just corrected them. Thanks a lot! The third one is actually a super soft /d/. As I explained in another video, the Spanish /d/ can be very soft when between vowels, and in this case it's so soft it's almost completely gone. But I've just checked and yes, I can hear a very faint /d/. The /e/ next to it is super clear. If we assume the /d/ is so soft it's gone, we could transcribe this phonetically as [mis'te.ɾjo e 'a.na ma'ɾi.a]. You will encounter super soft, almost gone /d/'s in many, many Spanish accents.
I've been looking for something like this to help me with Spanish. I teach esl (English as a second language) and am wondering if you know of a similar site like this to teach English
Is it important to remember the words or just the scope of the sentence. For me, as a dutch person sentences like 'vi un auto negro que llamo mi attencion' is easy to understand and remember. Same with 'estaba caminando par la calle'. But a sentence like 'esperando ver ese auto otra vez' are somehow difficult to remember. I do understand what it says, but the words don't feel logic. Do you have any suggestion how to tackle this?
Hi. Sure. Repetition. As Bruce Lee said, "I don't fear the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once. I fear the man who has practiced the same kick 10,000 times." I've memorized tons of English songs that had some parts that made no sense when I memorized them, but with time I've come to understand those parts.
I don't know what level this is supposed to be for, but I am just learning Spanish, so it's very difficult to listen to because I don't even know what 70-80% of the words are. How long should one be learning Spanish before attempting to listen to and transcribe this video?
Hi. Thank you for your support. Please try with the "Comprehensible Input" videos in the "Spanish Input Course 1" playlist. As a member you have full access to this playlist. Here it is. Watch the whole playlist in order so everything in the Comprehensible Input videos makes sense: ru-vid.com/group/PLNDr0kknnWpaHflmKQn-l74ygZ0Zl77-t
@@spanishinput , ok. This is really hard, but it's a good story, so I'm sticking with it. Anything with that silent "h" kills me!! It's "haber", but I hear "a ver". When it's "habia" I hear "a via". It takes me one hour to transcribe (badly) one minute of this story.
Hi! It does have Spanish only. Just choose "Spanish" in the subtitle options. For best results, use the Transcription technique: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MVGl2wgcasU.html
Hi. Good question! "Adentro" with verbs that express a state such as "estar" is common in neutral Spanish (aka Latin American Spanish) but not in Spain. In Spain "adentro" is mainly used with verbs that express a direction. Source: www.fundeu.es/recomendacion/adentro-dentro/
Why was the preterite for tener "tuve" used when talking about the cat instead of "tenía"? You presume that someone owned a pet for several years. But even if the cat dies, like when a person dies and you use the imperfect when speaking about their name, I would think the imperfect would be used talking about having a cat. Thanks!
Hola. "Tuve" in this case could be translated as "I had", while "tenía" could be translated as "I used to have". "I had a cat years ago" is more natural than "I used to have a cat years ago". At least in Spanish. Fun fact: When giving funeral speeches we prefer to use the preterite instead of the imperfect when talking about the deceased person. BTW, this part of the story was personal: I did have a white cat for 15 years.
Yeah I like your approach but I think it would be better to allow the listener to transcribe the story without English or Spanish subtitles on the screen. Just listening no visual.
actually I do not find you diction clear at all. You slur a lot of words and it makes it very hard for intermediate learns to understand what you are sayintg
Hi. It's called "connected speech" and it's used in every country and every social level. Omitting it is artificial. Please watch these videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VUELoKPdNoM.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AWXi7co9wcQ.html
😂 Are you serious 😂 He is already speaking slowly for us listen to him better. If you think he is speaking too fast, slow the video down on your app. 😅
