This session will outline some key findings from cognitive psychology, and then discuss ways in which we can translate that knowledge into practical advice for learning design. The talk will emphasise the role of managing learners' visual attention, and consider some of the cognitive pitfalls of educational practice, and the limitations of human information-processing. Using evidence-based research, Dr Atherton will look at how to make your materials more visually effective, considering:
• Miller, Cowan and the magic numbers of working memory
• Considering the cognitive load of your subject matter and the learning environment
• Hacking the brain by farming out work to different pathways
• Why 'sparse slides' really do work better
• Commonly-made errors and how to avoid

A presentation about presentations but the presentation is not presented! Who was the bunker-nut on the camera?!

All of the comments are about the missing slides (a tragic loss). This is a fantastic resource.

The presentation was good but it could have been better if the camera showed the presentation slides as well rather than just focusing on the presenter's expressions. As the listener is constantly waiting to see the contents of the slides, he can not focus on the verbal presentation contents. Therefore I would call it a good audio speech rather than a slide presentation.

Thanks a lot for sharing. There are some epic quotes, like "Bullet points kill people".

I would have gotten more from this video IF it included the presentation which was so key to her ideas. The presenter continually points to her discussion examples which can not be seen.

Great talk, but where oh where can we see the slides that were shown during this presentation? This is a talk about slide presentations, after all! The visuals were probably more important than the time-keeping function of the camera person.

Great presentation, shame about the camera work. Learning Technologies aught to practice what they preach.

I came here to point out the irony of making a presentation to capture the audience's attention; telling us to use less texts and be more visual while only showing us the presenter talking. I would've benefited more from this if I saw what the presenter kept trying to show us, even if they were just texts :(

I guess they must fix their own presentation before teaching others.

this is meant to discuss visual effect in presentation, but video itself seems violating the science of its contents by focusing only on the lecturers, but rarely presentation of information to convey by her... how ironically!

She talks about how practical design is for learning... gives a boring presentation where there is no design. The irony. It's like being a personal trainer while being obese.
