Learn to play in different keys by taking an easy song that you know well and moving it to different keys. When you play using closed scale positions, you can change the key by just moving the scale position on the neck. Here is Little Liza Jane in the keys of A, B, and C. Practice these and you are on your way to playing in any key.

You, sir, are officially my favorite RU-vidr. I love my violin training but I actually find it a bit more.. limiting than fiddle style/ improv playing. Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly so that my brain conceptualize the fingerboard! It doesn't HAVE to be complicated when you have a good teacher. Welp I am off to go watch ( and like ) all of your other videos!!

This would be easier if my first finger was big enough to cover both strings at the same time. My skinny girl finger has trouble shifting fast enough to compensate.

Ha ha, you're lucky. Many have to move their big ol' farmer finger out of the way to put down the next finger down!

Custer Ranch you just flatten your finger up to the second phalange (distal) or move it diagonally, and/or turn it on its side depending on need. It’s a pain but better that than farmer fingers 😂
