Learning a new skill set helps when you have a friend who gets it. ‪@GrowlingSidewinder‬ was more than gracious to devote some time to teaching me the basics and I asked if I could share it with you good peeps. Enjoy watching this dullard rotary wing pilot learn the art of the kill.

Always a pleasure, happy to do this whenever you like man, you taught me everything I know about the apache so this is the least I could do.

How well would these tactics work in a game with War Thunder, which is definitely less realistic than DCS?

Well done Casmo. If you stick with it you’ll find most of what GS is telling you starts to become instinctive as you get more dog fights under your belt. GS IMO, is the best at BFM since it is his focus in most of his videos.

OK we need more of this. This has already been more useful than a lot of other dedicated videos on the subject because I'm placed in your POV which is, like normally my case, not knowing what's going on.

Great vid. Casmo, in the Tomcat, you HAVE to use rudders in the turn; otherwise, your nose pitches up and you lose too much speed. Rudder left, roll left and pull. When you get really slow, you can roll with the rudder. Very different from the FBW jets

Really looking forward to this series! GS is a great instructor, I was always curious how thrust should be treated in a dogfight with modern jets because usually old warbirds risk burning up the engine if going WEP for too long. This vid cleared that up for me.

Fun! I spend a lot of time on GS's channel and clicked because of the collab. I'm enjoying this dogfighting clinic so far. I'll be keeping an eye out for the rest of this series!

Instead of pulling throttle, exchange speed for altitude. When you're turning, and you're going to fast, keep the nose above the horizon. That way you're trading energy for altitude, which you can always trade back by going nose down. If you cut throttles, that energy is gone forever. So if you're turning and you're fast, nose up. If you're turning and you're getting slow, nose down. You should never be at a perfect 90 degree angle. You're either at 80 degrees pulling up or 100 degrees pulling down.

I need more of a "how to turn" in the Tomcat since it lacks a digital fight control system and I lack analog flying skill :) Need something similar in the Apache. I came from Longbow where the flying was super easy. I crash as soon as I take off in the DCS Apache.
@ianrose666
@ianrose666 Год назад
Use the rudder to assist rolling in the Tomcat. Especially at slower speeds. Also, try to ‘fly the cross’, don’t mix rolling and pitching controls together. Certainly until you get used to the big old Turkey.

Outside of a computer sim like DCS, is the F-14A time or thermally limited in AB? It would seem that you could melt the aft fuselage by leaving it full power as you recommend. I guess I could look in my NATOPS and search for the answer.

Dogfights and fuel tanks don't last long enough for that to happen.

I would like to see a video where you are in a Tomcat and go versus all the other 4 gen fighters, but the catch is that you must not exceed the 6.5g limit. The real drivers complied with the limitation and where still able to score victories against all the other 4 gen fighters. I know that the Cat is structurally limited at 13 g the same as the F-15, but even at 6.5g limit, normally if flown properly, it should be possible to win against the other 4 gen fighters.

I don’t get why everyone thinks going ballistic is just going to fast…. I mean I get why (and that’s why you died goose), but it’s not going to fast but more that there’s zero control, think of a bullet, it has a ballistic profile
@CasmoTV
@CasmoTV Год назад
Yeah… cause you’re going to fast…
@ShawnHinck
@ShawnHinck Год назад
@@CasmoTV but going to fast isn’t going to assume a free fall trajectory specifically lacking control, which is what going ballistic is. Unless going to fast is going to result in a loss of power and control surfaces unresponsive.

"The F-18 over performs in DCS". Well that's nice, just another reason why I hate all the modern aircraft in DCS. There is so little public data available. Honestly it's getting to the point that Egale Dynamics is hands down the worst module maker for DCS. Even little things like speed break blow down are ignored. Hopefully with the wave of cold war modules coming in the next few years we will see a return to some level of realism in DCS. I hope one day the A modules of the Viper and Hornet will be made, and that they will at the vary least have simi accurate flight models.
