This series will cover the essentials of Defensive BFM that you need to survive a dogfight in DCS World. A sound understanding of BFM (Basic Fighter Manoeuvres) is essential if you want to survive in DCS. I can't claim to be an expert, but this is the first video in a series that will explain BFM to the best of my understanding. If anybody knows better, go wild in the comments and we can all learn.

this is the best air combat channel on youtube. It feels like a person is talking to me and training me. This will help me understand what dogfighting is and how to do. Because how detailed and good teacher you are. I hope that you get more acknowledge on youtube and have a fantastic day.

This is exactly the tutorial I’ve been looking for. Some other channels, although entertaining, don’t fully explain the terms and concepts involved. This feels more like going back to school and learning correctly 👏

Thank you. I was having a hard time finding dog-fighting guides and tutorials on RU-vid. Most were either BVR tutorials or telling me things like the difference between one-circle and two-circle then calling it a day.

Very good video, however would be useful to also explain that US Navy uses different aspect definitions, Target Aspect vs Aspect Angle.

I just found this series. Thanks for making it. It's obviously helpful for DCS novices, but most of the principles are also applicable to the real life dogfights which DCS simulates, even if there are inevitably some differences. If you play DCS yourself I suggest uploading some actual footage of in game dogfights which should help to get your channel noticed by gamers who will then watch your other videos, such as these. Alternatively, you could reach out to channels (such as Growling Sidewinder or Longshot) who provide DCS dogfight footage and analysis to ask them to collaborate with you or refer to your video guides.

Hey there, ~JUICE here. I actually had to look up Longshot on RU-vid as I’ve never heard of him in regards to Air Warfare. Lots of viewers of this channel and its series have mentioned guys like Growling Sidewinder or Grim Reapers, but after watching a few of their videos, I personally didn’t get anything from them that relates to Air Combat or explained in terms of realism or referenced in air warfare doctrine or instruction. Speaking only for myself as a former Air Warfare professional like Tyro and Tactical Pascale, I can say there are people in the DCS community who use the simulation as a video game and others who see it as a pseudo means to emulate real-world procedures, training profiles, and tactics. I’m sure most of us realize that DCS isn’t as authentic as reality, but it has provided the platform for simulated realism for those who want to use it for that purpose. Not to degrade the value of or the respect for such content creators like I mentioned above, but The Air Warfare channel is about exactly that, Air Warfare, and not about DCS World. We just use the simulator as a means to present content.

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP Fair enough, although as an amateur fighter jet fan who is also an avid gamer, I don't see what's preventing you from continuing to mostly make content about real air warfare, while including the occasional video showing simulated combat (from a game such as DCS). You could even use these as an opportunity to point out how the game differs from reality. This video has approx 2000 views and 100 likes. It deserves more, but because your subject is somewhat specialized it doesn't reach a wider audience and consequently RU-vid doesn't recommend it as much.

There will always be some that like it, some that don’t, and some who are indifferent to the channel. We’re a small group of enthusiasts and focus on Air Combat from a position of related experience and often notice the nuances of DCS World and the community content that pertains more about video games and less about real doctrine. There’s nothing wrong with that, but our vision and mission is still forming and our team is growing internally with a cadre of multinational, experienced aviators who share the vision and passion for Air Warfare. @@AIRWARFAREGROUP I've no doubt I'll come back to this video in one year and the channel will be in the top 3 DCS content if not the number one go to channel. A lot of folks who come to DCS aren't about the aracde/game genre. It's about the challenge and therefore about simulated realism (otherwise we'd all be jumping in Ace Combat); and when it comes to simulated realism; I just can't see any channel anywhere near the quality we see here. You're really onto something here - please keep up the good work. P.s. There is another channel worth a mention here: Command T; would love to see some sort of collab going on. Personal feedback to Juice: really love the "auxiliary" content that you put out every now and again like the blood chit video; I appreciate this is slightly secondary to the "meat and potatoes" of the channel as Tyro puts it ;) it's more like a dessert dish you can serve every now and again. Thank you all you for your past/present/future service :)

I have a really hard time keeping tally on the bandit when in dog fights. I have Track IR set up well, but I still struggle to maintain tally.

Hi Eric, which aircraft are you flying and what's your FOV numbers? My Hornet FOV is 80.0 and my Viper is about 65.0 The reason I feel FOV settings are so important for visuals in DCS is that the base game was built first for primitive, if any, pilot cockpit view. A good example is, go F2 and move around to your tail so you are looking forward. Notice how close the buildings and terrain appears to you in front of the jet. Then hit F1 and go inside the cockpit and see the difference in perception as far as depth and scale. My experience is that without adjusting the FOV for each cockpit, objects are actually smaller and appear farther away or are hard to track. You said high aspect of 180 degree naturally means the aircraft are nose to nose, but couldn’t a 180 degree aspect also mean that the bandit is directly on your 6, since aspect has nothing to do with heading. If the bandit is at your 6, you have a 180 degree aspect to the bandits tail

Not quite. In the video I state that High Aspect BFM is where both aircraft are High Aspect to one another. This can only be the case if they are nose to nose. ~Tyro

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP So these are in fact 2 distinct definitions, it seems. Aspect is the angular measurement from another aircraft's tail (heading doesn't matter). And high aspect BFM is when two aircraft are nose to nose, and therefore both have high aspect in relation to each other. Then Eric was correct when saying that a 180 degree aspect means the bandit is directly on your 6.

@@LordVlader Hi Vlad, that's not actually what I said. If you are at High Aspect to the Bandit, then you are out in front of him, regardless of your direction. He might be behind you, or in front of you, but you are definitely in front of him. If he is High Aspect to you, then he is in front of you (again regardless of his heading). Therefore, if both aircraft are at High Aspect (as is defined by High Aspect BFM) then they are facing one another.

I have an issue with #1. The F14 comes with an unrealistic radar system that it unbeatable. The name of that system is Jester. He miraculously goes Tally on every target within radar range, regardless of their emission status. It's complete BS. I have a buddy that always uses the 14, so I will never arrive unseen. I don't use the 14 so I have to rely on luck most of the time, that I am heading in the correct azimuth with my radar adjusted accordingly to the correct elevation in hopes that we Tally simultaneously. Otherwise I get a lot of practice with Defensive BFM. He also likes to fly in with a cold nose at times (so I can't pick him up), and funny enough, Jester still somehow makes the call-outs.

What aircraft do you fly Grendul? Arriving at the fight with an advantage doesn’t necessarily mean unseen - could be with turning room etc. Are you on the Tac DCS Discord? There are loads of great pilots on there who would be happy to show you how to defeat your buddy!

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP I fly almost all aircraft but am most proficient with the F18. I can beat him 19 times out of 20 so I'm just good enough to be dangerous. I would, however, like to become better. I'm about a solid 4/10. I can beat any new pilot, but not those who know what they are doing. I'd like to check out the discord group.

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP Oh also, I beat my buddy because he doesn't know how to capitalize when I end up in a low energy state. That's the only thing saving me right now. As soon as he learns how and when to yo-yo, I'm screwed. I've conveniently neglected to teach him that.... Serves him right for flying up on my 6 with his magical Jester, nose cold...

This was entertaining to read. I have witnessed very generous people there at that discord. Sometimes it’s not about winning. I see you and your buddy flying as a team and fight and splash others. Just get together and flip a coin every week to see which one of you will be the flight lead or wingman. It’s about teaching and seeing your student/buddy improve that’s really what these guys do which is truely awesome.
