I am not into working leather right now, but I am passionate about learning something new every day. Regardless, it is a wonderful material, and I quite enjoyed this video. Not only did I learn a few things, but I also truly enjoyed the way you narrated what you were doing. Thus, I subscribed! Thanks for making it fun. Maybe I will try some of these projects in the future. It's been a while (years) since I last commented on a video. I must say, I had to do it for yours. I'm having a great time watching your youtube channel. Keep up the amazing work.

6:30 back stitching to secure the thread ends is the standard procedure for using a sewing machine. But it is a dead give away that the piece has been machine stitched. ... Here's how to secure the threads/stitches without back stitching. ... Start sewing making sure you have a good 3-4 inches of thread tail at the beginning and at the end of your stitching... Don't back stitch! Remove the piece from the machine. Pull on the bottom thread until the top thread's loop vs be seen. Pull that top thread tail to the back and tie the top and bottom thread tails into a square knot, cut and melt the ends into the knot. It will be impossible to tell a machine stitched piece from a really good hand piece... even when checking the back. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷

Where did you get the anvil with the grooves for round head rivets? Best I've been able to do is a steel dapping cube. Gets the job done, but not much surface area.

I've been just printing the patterns for carving on printer paper and then lay it over the leather and then poke holes along the lines, no more than 1/8in apart, with a small awl, not too much force, just enough to make a tiny yet visible hole so that I can go back and trace over the lines with a pencil and then start carving. But then recently I got some Celtic knotwork patterns with these transparent sheets with a raised ridge running along the lines on one side, which seems to allow me to wet the leather, lay the sheet with the ridges facing down onto the leather, and either roll a rolling-pin or roller over it, pressing down hard, or lightly hammer with a rubber mallet, and it seems to make visible indentations in the leather (not sure if that is how they are intended to be used 😅).

@DarkHorseWorkshop

Honestly they're at a spot where they'd just be a bit bigger shoulders on women but I've made them for women and never adjusted the size.
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 2 года назад
Could do a quick taped pattern out of paper if you were worried about it and give it a look, but I wouldn't adjust it down too much if you decide to.

Very nice. Why not use Chicago screws to hold things together while doing the stitching etc?
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 2 года назад
They'd still get in the way of my sewing machine. Tossing the rivet in there was just a quick thing to do. Also I doubt I have a thin enough chicago screw in the shop that's long enough to go through those layers.

@sirilay

I've heard (a while back, admittedly) that using an awl for rivet holes is better than a punch because a punch cuts the leather, whereas an awl essentially pushes between the fingers and keeps them more intact. Have you had any feedback from other leatherworkers on this? Looking at techniques for longevity's sake, and wondered how this realizes in practice. I appreciate any feedback!
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 2 года назад
In a perfect world you'd awl or machine sew or pricking iron. But you have to weight that against ease of use is all. Harder to stitch smaller holes.

Hi, I've been following you for a long time and finally decided to start making leather stuff. The thing is that where I live the leather is meassured in mm not oz and I can't find a reliable conversion from oz to mm. Could you tell me at least the thicknes (it could be in inches, that I can convert easily) of the 10, 12 and 14 oz that you use in this build? For what I've been asking around the maximum thicknes I can buy is 3.5mm. There's another "leather kind" that's also veg tan and it's thicker but at the shop they told me it is used to make shoe soles and it can't be wet molded because it's too hard. Do you know if that's true? Maybe they simply don't know because they usually sell to shoe and furniture makers. Thanks for all the videos and iformation you gave us all the time. I hope you can answer my questions. Cheers!

I have some questions regarding your waxing process if you don't mind answering, since it seems far more efficient than my current method. You said you use paraffin wax, can you use beeswax instead? Do you leave the wax in the cooker after your done or do you empty it out or let it harden and heat it up again later? Thanks in advance.

Bees way alone is too soft I find. Some people mix it with paraffin . I just use paraffin and leave it in the cooker after.
