Making Leather Armor - Shoulders / Spaulders / Pauldrons

This is my third video on how to make leather armor, it deals specifically with leather shoulders, spaulders, pauldrons. , and a pattern I use when making armor for sport fighters in the Society for Creative Anachronism. You can easily translate this technique directly to costume and cosplay without the need for wax hardening, instead using a bit of water forming to get your shape, or no shaping at all with a lighter leather.
Check below for my social media links like my Patreon and Etsy, as well as my TeeSpring Store where I'm using my artwork to make some shirts. Also you'll find links to all the tools and supplies I'm using.

If you don't have one, consider a high profile bevel, it's smaller for those tight spots and the angle is steeper so you don't muck those overlaps. I bought when I started doing knotwork and it makes a huge difference.

I am weird about articulation, I like to actually use grommets on the holes where the lames meet up and the proper length screw post rivet. It isn't as accurate but the articulation goes through the roof. I have never tried to set a copper burr in the setup though, So I am unsure if it would work in that condition.

I play age of conan now for twelve years and it always was an inspiration for styles and designs, because it's more than a nordic culture to see there. Btw, when I was an apprentice I learned how to make rivet connections by hand and three are two handy tools you should use. First compress the bolt, so the ring can't jump off, and the second tool is for forming the head round. I don't know the english names bit in german the are called nietzieher (rivetpuller) and kopfmacher or kopfsetzer (headmaker or headsetter). A set of three pairs should cost u 20-25 euros/dollars.

I absolutely love your work. I'm thinking of adding leather armour for motorcycle clothing. Is that the "sport" use you refer to? In any case 2mm is sufficient for impact abrasion protection with cowhide for the shoulders elbows and knees. It would probably be sewn to the chassis fabric (either thinner leather or textiles). I'll probably use yak leather sourced locally as I live in Mongolia where they are native.

Do you find the top section floats a bit freely at all with just one strap around the arm? Or would you have a cord tie going to the gambeson or something under to hold it down? This looks awesome, and the Yggdrasil looks great. Going to have a full arm set of Viking armour at this rate!

I have heard from other leather workers that boiling leather in wax is not a good idea for hardening leather. Supposedly it smells of wax and allows colors to run/rub off. They suggest to 'bake' the leather verse wax. I am curious of your thoughts on the subject and if you have had any of the aforementioned issues with wax boiled leather.
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 5 лет назад
I've had no issues, my wax is just unscented paraffin so any scent is light. Water Hardening can work but I find it tedious, wax is easy, and if I'm selling stuff, easy is good. Also never had colors rub off or run, it's wax.. it's pretty much a finish.
@astraldesign
@astraldesign 5 лет назад
@@DarkHorseWorkshop thank you for your response. A slow speed on your drill press and adding lots of cutting oil, or unused motor oil, every few seconds of drilling to keep it lubed up. Otherwise, you'll overheat your drillbit and dull it immediately. Nothing will drill after that.

I have a question on hardening. Water vs Wax. My friend is a falconer and he requested for me to make him some shin guards because he goes through a lot of briers to flush out rabbits. I water hardened them, had him wear them and they seemed to harden at first but it did not hold at all. They are still floppy. I believe I used 8 ounce veg tan leather. Is the reason they are still floppy is because of the water or the leather weight? This has perplexed me a ton.

Try a kneaded rubber eraser, or if you can find 'em in school supplies they make those colourful cap erasers in just plain white - the lack of pigment really improves how it erases, plus you can leave your pencil on the paper and it doesn't bleed dye into the paper. I get mine at Dollar Tree in like a - it's either a 20 or a 15 pack, I forget. $1 is $1 though. I also saw them at Walgreens and CVS.

I happen to love all of your forethought, while you're talking us through your projects! It's similar to the way that I think myself through a project, so I really like that you do that. It's not "Too much Information", just so you know. Some of us appreciate it. Plus it seems like your natural way of doing things, so please do not change that? I'm really interested in your waxing method. I love the look of waxed leather, and I know that it provides some level of water protection, and maybe something else, as well, but I want to know if that wax comes off on things that you wouldn't want it coming off on? For instance, because I like the look of it, I was wanting to integrate it into the bike seats that I make, but because I have never worked with it, I am unsure of how it acts while the item is being used. Like, will the wax come off the seat and onto someone's ass? Especially outdoors on a hot day, will that wax become almost liquified again, and get all over your clothes? Things like that, I am curious about. Anyway, thank you for your videos! I am a huge fan of your work, and I get a lot of great ideas from you. Take care!
