Leather industry KILLING animals??? The truth is….

Once the meat industry harvests animals, the animal's skin becomes a waste. The leather then becomes an upcycled material and we save the animals' leather hides. We don't kill animals, we save them by using their leather and turning it into a wonderful product that you can use for decades to come.

I'm of the belief that we should eat less meat (not no meat, just less) But if we have to kill an animal, we don't let anything go to waste. Waaaay better for the environment to have a good leather bag or pair of shoes that will last years, than some plastic, polluting item that you will have to throw away in two years.

Yesss!! Most things come with a cost (to the planet, to the life of an animal, etc), in the end I think we need to find ways to avoid plastics AND minimize harm to animals & our ecosystems but we won’t get there if we look at things as “black or white” (all or nothing thinking) The universe itself functions by finding the right balance. The other issue with an no extreme approach is that it’s impossible to get everyone to agree when everyone is only think about their priorities.

Most animal byproducts are not going to waste. We're processing animals with much less waste today when compared to the past. Not everything goes into the landfill. While terrible things do end up in landfills, most of the trash is sorted, again in better ways than it use to be in the past. I agree that cutting animal consumption would be better for the planet. But theirs just so much to process from animals that we need for everyday products.

This is just the opposite of what most retailers are selling to people! This IS very educational. Good to know. The only thing I don't like about some leather products are the chemicals used to dye the leather. I've seen leather manufacturing in some countries and the factories pour out colored dyes into local rivers and waterways. That can't be good either!

If an animal has to die, every part of that animal should go to use so they do not die in vain. I'd prefer if we did not end their lives, but that is the reality of our world. So each part of the animal should be used and appreciated, not wasted. I just wish people would appreciate and understand their leather goods as a sacrifice of life for their use. But some people are just collecting many designer bags for the name, just to have most sit in a closet day in and out, maybe being photographed once in a while for social media. It should be appreciated more, in the way that you do. I also firmly believe real leather is much better than the alternative "leather" products, as plastic is awful for our environment.

This right here. Respect the animal and respect the life by using every part of the animal. Organs. Bones. Hide. Nose to tail.
@PiXie232

Well, most alternative leather products are actually natural, like made out mushrooms and other bio organic material. It’s the plastic/polyester items that you have to steer clear of.
@meowctrum485
@meowctrum485 Год назад
@@theirishsaint4324 completely agree. Thats why i can calmly enjoy rabbit fur, but not fox or chinchilla fur. Rabbit can be eaten and their fur used, only bones wasted. But foxes produces only fur. We have no rights to kill animals only for fancy accessories. Only thing, which barely ok, is animals killed as population control. This is one of the ways, where fur or leather can be ok.
@theirishsaint4324
@theirishsaint4324 Год назад
@@meowctrum485 understandable position. I am from the southwest and coyotes do present a real problem here as far as pests, I have heard of them going after pets, chickens they’ll take out, of course but even targeting toddlers, with not a real natural enemy threat in the city. I think there’s even some breeding with the wild dog packs we have running around which does not help. I do know other places have pest problems, or species invasiveness issues. Pythons, lion fish, and even alligators in Florida (due to the fact they issue so few hunting tags it’s really not a drop in the 1.2 million estimate population vs Louisiana and how they handle it), and hogs in Texas, humans created the mess and are obligated to fix it in my book. As a whole though, I don’t disagree with your point of view. I just think it can be a bigger pest problem situation than people understand. Although I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase a mink, fox, or chinchilla fur coat I also would not (in the slim chance of this happening) be upset at someone or yell at them about giving me a coat. It’s a fairly fine line to find being a hunting advocate and being cool with fur farming that a lot of folks wouldn’t necessarily see.

I think that if you are okay with the status quo as far as commercial meat industry, then don't feel guilty buying leather (and you probably dont anyways lol). But even though this is preventing waste. I have a problem with the commercial meat industry as it exists today. Mass produced leather is part of it. And even though this is not being turned into waste the actual raising of the animals for slaughter is really what is harmful on many different levels. But then plastic leather isn't any better. So you know.. Buying from small local farmers vendors and artisans is where it is at, but I recognize my privilege in having access to that. The world is so complicated.

I eat next to no meat in my diet and very few other animal products, but I readily wear leather and shearling/sheepskin/mouton. The problem most people have with leather is: 1. The fact that is subsidises animal agriculture insodoing increasing the monetary incentives to engage in it. 2. Most leather is chrome tanned. Most of my jackets are veg tanned but that takes more time and effort to make and most people can't afford it. My jackets consist of some goatskin pieces that took 2 weeks to tan. Whereas the same could be tanned in a few hours with a tumbler and chrome tanning solution. The leather then had to he softened. I get your point, but tanneries put out a lot of toxic waste in chrome tanning.

This is especially true for sheepskin. 3. We as consumers should buy more vegetable tanned leathers. These are 100% natural and biodegradable within a reasonable timeframe.

Since I learned how expensive leather is, I kind of doubt this a lot. The leather is more expensive than the meat weight wise. Meat of a rind about 4k, leather of a rind 500 to 750.

Its till a by product. There are many cases where you can get the animal for the price of the leather if gives. Leather is not really easy or cheap to process and is also quite hard to work with.

Buy second hand . Never new, especially leather which aids in killing of an animal.

It's sad that this needs to be explained. I mean, if I'm in the boos to eat chicken breasts, I'm not gonna throw the rest of the chicken in the garbage.

That still does NOT justify the conditions animals are in before being put out of their misery. I just don't understand why people who wear leather and eat meat can't demand better conditions before they are slaughtered? Let dogs live the same way and everyone has a conniption🙄
